RE-OPENING DAY – 15th JUNE

The new academic year was begun with a prayer service to invoke God’s blessings for a successful year ahead. Scripture verses were read from various holy books, followed by intercessory prayers. Students later met their new class teachers and new classmates.

TEACHERS’ PROGRAMMES

TEACHERS’ ORIENTATION- 17th JUNE Deacon Ivan D’souza conducted an orientation for teachers during which teachers were taught how to overcome their drawbacks by converting their weaknesses into strengths, which ultimately enhances self- esteem. He spoke about the importance of struggle to gain victory and about how a teacher can be an ideal mentor.

TRAINING SESSION- 24TH JULY One of our Hindi teachers attended a training session, regarding the change in the question paper format for Stds. IX and X. Our Maths teacher attended a training session regarding the Accelerated Learning Programme for Std. IX.

IIMUN SESSION- 27TH AUGUST This was a session conducted by the Indian International Model United Nations to generate feedback about the previous workshop attended by our students. Our students participated in the inter-school discussion and debate on current affairs, at the Leadership Summit in April this year.

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION- 2ND AND 3RD SEPTEMBER The students put up a programme in the school hall, involving a skit, speeches, group songs and dance performances to entertain the teachers. A special mass was conducted for the teachers the next day. The PTA organised a lunch party for the teachers at Saisa, a popular club in . It was an enjoyable day with games, music, dance and a sumptuous lunch.

AVEC MEETING- 17TH OCTOBER Two of our teachers attended the AVEC Programme at Don Bosco’s School, Matunga; where they were enlightened about the work done by AVEC and the activities that can be conducted at the school level to promote value education. The problems of irregularity, indiscipline, poor performance of students and the negative impact of the internet were discussed.

NATIONAL PEACE CONVENTION- 30TH JANUARY - 1ST FEBRUARY Our Principal and two teachers attended the National Peace Convention organised by the Universal Solidarity Movement at . There were 270 participants who included Principals, teachers, students, social activists, writers and journalists from different states.

STAFF PICNIC- 17TH FEBRUARY The staff members were taken for the Annual Staff Picnic to S. P. Farmhouse, Khopoli, where they enjoyed spending time together, relaxing and playing various games.

TEACHERS’ CONSULTATION FORUM - 7TH APRIL Two of our teachers attended the Teachers’ Consultation Forum organised by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vaastu Sangrahalaya [formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum]. This was regarding an exhibition to be held in November.

PARENTS’ PROGRAMMES

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING- 30TH JUNE During the introductory meeting of the class teachers and parents, PTA representatives were selected. This was followed by the Annual General Meeting, during which a renowned psychologist Mr. Avinash D’souza, spoke to parents about the need for them to be role-models for their children, so that values are instilled in them since early childhood. He urged parents to spend quality time communicating with children and advised them to keep children away from the impact of bad company, violence and vulgar content promoted majorly by the mass-media and the internet.

OPEN DAY The Open Day was conducted for the teachers and parents after each examination to meet and discuss the progress of the students and point out areas where there was scope for improvement. Parents were called to meet the Principal and the teachers from time to time to deal with academic and behavioural problems of students. STUDENTS’ PROGRAMMES

INVESTITURE CEREMONY- 24TH JUNE The House Mistresses conducted a prayer service to pray for the newly appointed cabinet and club members. The Manager and Principal addressed the prefects instructing them on their duties as responsible student leaders.

STUDENTS’ ORIENTATION- 27TH AND 28TH JUNE Father Joby Matthews conducted an orientation for students and spoke about the importance of knowledge and wisdom and the difference between the two. He also spoke about self-motivation, self- esteem, self-respect and originality.

GREENLINE SESSION- 22ND AUGUST Dr. Ajit Gokhale and his team from Don Bosco’s School, Matunga, conducted a session for the members of the Eco-Club. They sensitised students towards environmental problems like over-population and water shortage and discussed solutions for the same. Activities were suggested to be practised at the individual and local level.

EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS- 24TH AUGUST Educational field trips were organised to different places: Std. V students were taken to Taraporewala Aquarium at Charni Road and Traffic Signal Park at Colaba. Std. VI was taken to Dolphin Aquarium at Vile Parle. Std. VII was taken to Mahim Nature Park. Stds. VIII, IX and X, were taken to Nehru Science Centre and the Planetarium.

DENTAL CHECK-UP- 14TH AND 16TH SEPTEMBER The USM Club organised a free dental check-up for all students in the school hall. Students were given feedback on their dental condition and were prescribed further treatment if needed.

CLEANLINESS CAMPAIGN- 12TH FEBRUARY Our students joined up with other students of the H-Ward schools to clean up the slum areas allotted to them in Bandra East.

RTSE SCHOLARSHIP- 12TH FEBRUARY Selected students of Stds. VI- IX appeared for the Rationalist Talent Search Examination, a state-level scholarship exam in which over 500 schools participated.

STUDENTS’ PICNIC- 27TH JANUARY The students were taken to Shangrila Resort for the Annual Students’ Picnic, where they enjoyed themselves on the rides and in the swimming pools.

SESSION ON ROAD SAFETY- 7TH MARCH The Traffic Department officials conducted a session for Stds. VII and VIII about the importance of following traffic rules to prevent accidents.

EDUCATIONAL MOVIE- 8TH MARCH As a part of the Swach Bharat Abhiyan, the Education Department showed an educational movie which was about maintenance of a clean environment.

WASTE-FREE CAMPUS PROJECT- 8TH MARCH The Waste-Free Campus Project was launched by the Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the BMC and two other officers. Teacher and student representatives from the neighbouring schools of Bandra were invited. The concept and need of waste management and the measures taken by our school to reduce waste in the campus were explained about. An action plan based on the Carbon Fast by Bishop Allwyn D’silva, was suggested to create a cleaner and greener environment at the individual, local and national level.

SEX EDUCATION SEMINAR – 19TH AND 20TH MARCH Mrs. Joan Manohar a counsellor and social worker conducted this seminar for students of Std. IX to make them aware of the right use of the gift of human sexuality.

MOTIVATIONAL SESSION – 25TH MARCH This session on the importance of Mind Power was conducted for Std. IX by Mrs. Rajani Nair.

LEARNING DISABILITIES Weak students can be sent through the school for a test to know if they have learning disabilities. The Education Department provides facilities for such students according to which LD students of Stds. IX and X can do Maths of Std. VII and instead of Marathi a vocational subject can be selected. Such students are sent for counselling to professionals appointed by the school.

ACTIVITIES FOR CATHOLIC STAFF AND STUDENTS

RECOLLECTION FOR TEACHERS- 26TH AUGUST Mr. Arun D’silva, PTA member and Praise and Worship Leader of the Charismatic Prayer Group of St. Teresa’s Parish, led the teachers into praise and worship. Mr. Victor Pereira conducted a recollection, in which he spoke about how we can improve our relationships with each other by working on the spiritual aspect of our lives. He spoke about problem-solving techniques, the role of faith and responsibility in crisis and about how to eliminate what is insignificant from our lives.

PILGRIMAGE TO MOUNT MARY’S CHURCH- 10TH SEPTEMBER The Catholic students along with other students of the schools in Bandra, were taken on a walking pilgrimage to Mount Mary’s Church, where they heard mass and then visited the Bandra Fair.

SCHOOL FEAST MASS- 12TH AND 13TH DECEMBER A special mass was conducted for the staff and Catholic students on the 12th in the school hall, as the Feast of St. John of the Cross, our patron saint, was approaching. Another mass was conducted the next evening for the religious, parishioners and ex-students who were invited to join in praying for the progress of our school. Masses were conducted on the First Fridays every month for the Catholic staff and students. Stations of the Cross were conducted on the First Friday of Lent.

COMPETITIONS AND EXHIBITIONS

GEOGRAPHY CHART-MAKING COMPETITION- 22ND JULY This was organised by the Social Studies Club. The topics were as follows: Std. V- Solar Energy, Std. VI- Energy Resources, Std. VII- Ocean Floor Relief, Std. VIII- Rocks and Rock Types, Std. IX- Natural Resources of , Std. X- Physiographic Divisions of India.

ENGLISH ELOCUTION- 30TH AUGUST This was organised by the English Club in which Stds. V and VI narrated motivational stories, Stds.VII and VIII delivered speeches of famous personalities and Stds. IX and X expressed views on current issues.

CARD-MAKING COMPETITION- 30TH AUGUST This was organised by the Art Club in which students made beautiful cards to express their feelings for their teachers as Teachers’ Day was approaching.

APTITUDE TEST- 15TH SEPTEMBER The Times NIE team conducted an aptitude test in Maths and Science for students of Stds. VI-X, for which 919 students appeared.

SCIENCE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION- 23RD SEPTEMBER This was organised by the Science Club; for Stds. VII –VIII the topic was ‘Junk Food’ and for Stds. IX- X the topic was ‘Stay Healthy.’

MARATHI ELOCUTION- 27TH SEPTEMBER This was organised by the Marathi Club in which Stds. V and VI recited poems, Stds. VII and VIII narrated value-based stories and Stds. IX and X delivered speeches based on current issues.

ESSAY-WRITING COMPETITION- 23RD OCTOBER The H-Ward conducted an essay-writing competition for all the students.

ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION- 6TH AND 7TH JANUARY The Art Club organised an exhibition involving articles made from waste material. Guests from the locality and parents of our students were invited to see the drawings, paintings and articles on display. They were encouraged to purchase articles of their choice, the proceeds of which were used to help our Std. X student who is suffering from cancer.

CELEBRATIONS

INDEPENDENCE DAY- 15TH AUGUST The national flag was hoisted followed by the March Past by the three houses. A prayer service was conducted to pray for our nation, followed by a speech, poem, song and dance performance celebrating the spirit of patriotism. HINDI DIWAS- 14TH SEPTEMBER The Hindi Club organised the morning assembly during which the significance of the day was explained and a poem was recited. A hand-writing competition was conducted for all classes. Charts were displayed. An inspiring movie about Abdul Kalam was shown over the Smartboard.

DIWALI PRAYER SERVICE- 27TH OCTOBER The Cultural Club conducted a prayer service to highlight the significance of the festival of Diwali. Students were requested to celebrate an Eco- friendly Diwali and save money on fireworks. The money saved was donated to help our Std. X student who is suffering from cancer.

CHILDREN’S DAY PROGRAMME- 16TH OCTOBER It began with a prayer dance by the teachers, followed by a prayer service for the students. A ‘welcome song’ was sung by the teachers, followed by a magic show. There were solo, duet and group dance performances by teachers, which students thoroughly enjoyed.

SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATION- 5TH DECEMBER There was a programme held to felicitate an English teacher Mrs. Judelyne Valladares and a peon Mr. Shankar, who have completed 25 years of service in our institution. A prayer service was organised for them, followed by speeches and songs in honour of them. They expressed their feelings about their experience of working in our institution.

SPORTS DAY- 20TH DECEMBER It began with the March Past, followed by the races, drill and aerobic displays. An ex-student of ours Miss Meenakshi Agarwal, who is a successful hockey player and coach and Miss Sneha Ullal, a movie actress, were the Chief Guests. Parents were invited as the audience.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAMME- 23RD DECEMBER The Cultural Club organised a prayer service highlighting the significance of Christmas, followed by a skit revealing the message of Christmas. There were hymns and carols sung in between and a delightful group dance at the end. Books and chocolates were distributed to the students.

REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION- 26TH JANUARY The students of Stds. V, IX and X assembled in school for the flag hoisting, followed by speeches, song and dance performances. The students of Stds. VI, VII and VIII assembled along Carter Road to Bandstand with students of other schools, under the guidance of the BIRD Committee. The schools took part in the March Past, Band Display and Folk Dance performances based on the culture of different states.

FAREWELL PROGRAMME- 10TH FEBRUARY The students of Std. VIII conducted a prayer service to pray especially for our Std. X students. Students were presented souvenirs by the Manager and the Principal. The students of Stds. VIII and IX organised a function involving speeches, games, song and dance performances to entertain the students.

SHIVAJI JAYANTI CELEBRATION- 20TH FEBRUARY The significance of Shivaji Jayanti was explained, a quiz was conducted to test the students’ knowledge about Shivaji. The Prabhat Pheri was conducted in which students participated whole-heartedly. There were skit, song and dance performances highlighting the values of Shivaji.

MARATHI DIWAS- 27TH FEBRUARY The origin of the Marathi Language and the rich heritage of Marathi literature was explained about. There were song and dance performances based on Marathi folk culture. An inspiring Marathi movie ‘Ganvesh’ was shown to students over the smartboard, the movie was about facing and overcoming struggle .

MAHARASHTRA DAY- 1ST MAY This was organised by the Marathi Club. The significance of the day was explained. There were speeches, poems and a group song reflecting Maharashtrian Culture.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES

The Under 14 Team stood 3rd in the Andrew’s Tournament in June 2016 and 2nd in the tournament in February 2017. They stood 1st in the DSO [District Sports Office] Tournament at the District Level in July and August and at the Divisional Level in September, after which they played at the State Level in Aurangabad in which they lost to the Solapur Team. They played at the Nationals in . Reeba Shaikh represented Maharashtra and stood 4th in Haryana at the National Level. The Under 17 Team played the St. Peter’s Youth Social Service Hockey Tournament, at St. Andrew’s in August and won against Mary Immaculate High School by3-2, after which they lost against St. Theresa’s High School, Santacruz. Payal Sawant was declared s the most promising player. They played the Major Dhyanchand Hockey Tournament in August conducted by the MHA [Mumbai Hockey Association] in Churchgate. They won by 7-0 against Auxilium Convent, Wadala but lost by 2-1 against St. Elias High School in the semi-finals. They got the 1st place in the Andrew’s Tournament in February 2017.

SCOUT AND GUIDE ACTIVITIES

The Scout and Guide students passed tests related to cooking, computers, rangoli, drawing, sports and camp discipline. We were the winners of the Camporee and of the 17th National Jamboree at Mysore from 27th December to 7th January. We won the 1st prize in the Pioneering Project, Food Plaza, March Past and the Folk Dance Competition, the 2nd prize in Lazim and the Best School Award. The other activities our students took part in were Colour Party and Skilorama. Our Principal, Sister Zarina won a special award for encouraging scout and guide activities. Maharashtra got 16 awards. The boys of St. Stanislaus High School and we shall be representing Maharashtra at the Asia-Pacific Jamboree at Mongolia and the World Jamboree at Canada.

SSC RESULT : - Our School got cent percent results with 47 distinctions, 84 First classes, 37 second classes and 2 third classes. Shivanshi Shishodia stood first with 93.40%, Zainab Ansari and Ayesha Ansari stood second with 90.40% and Ashita Parekh stood with 90%.
