Conservation of Four At-Risk Plant Species in Sandhill Ecosystems Of
CONSERVATION OF FOUR AT-RISK PLANT SPECIES IN SANDHILL ECOSYSTEMS OF THE SOUTHEASTERN COASTAL PLAIN by JACLIN A. DURANT (Under the Direction of Rebecca R. Sharitz) ABSTRACT Conservation and restoration of herbaceous plant species endemic to the longleaf pine sandhills ecosystem of the southeastern United States are essential for maintaining diversity in this habitat. This study focuses on four at-risk species that represent a variety of plant life forms associated with this ecosystem. Natural populations were surveyed for density and reproduction, and experiments were conducted to determine how varying environmental conditions affect germination. In addition, the growth and survival of these four species planted into experimental gardens under a variety of post-disturbance conditions were studied. Results suggest that these four plant species can survive disturbed conditions that are likely to be found in sandhills ecosystems and that restoration efforts can be optimized by the pre-treatment of seeds using heat, cold stratification, or scarification techniques. Rare Vascular Plant Taxa Associated with the Longleaf Pine Ecosystems: Patterns in Taxonomy and Ecology Joan Walker U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, Department of Forest Resources, Clemson University, Clemson, SC 29634 ABSTRACT Ecological, taxonomic and biogeographical characteristics are used to describe the group of 187 rare vascular plant taxa associated with longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) throughout its range. Taxonomic and growth form distributions mirror the patterns of common plus rare taxa in the flora. Most of the species have rather narrow habitat preferences, and narrow geo graphic ranges, but a few rare sp~cies with broad habitat tolerances and wider geographic ranges are identified. Ninety-six local endemics are associated with longleaf pine ecosystems. This incidence is as high as in other comparably-sized endemic-rich areas in North America. A distinct geographic trend in rare species composition is indicated. Species fall into 4 groups: Florida longleaf associates, south Atlantic coastal plain, east Gulf coastal plain, and west Gulf coastal plain species. Distributional factors that produce rarity must be considered in the development of conser vation strategies. Overall, conserving longleaf communities rangewide will protect .large ~ numbers of rare plant taxa in Southeastern United States. Harcombe Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Rice University Houston, TX 77005 National Park Service Cooperative Agreement CA14001004 May 29, 2007 - 1 - - 2 - INTRODUCTION The goal of the project was to produce verified inventories of vascular plant species (including ferns and fern allies) by unit in the Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP), a part of the National Park System located in southeastern Texas in Hardin, Tyler, Polk, Liberty, Jefferson, Orange and Jasper counties. Collection efforts focused on the major units (Big Sandy, Hickory Creek, Turkey Creek, Beech Creek, Lance Rosier, Neches Bottom/Jack Gore Baygall, Beaumont). Owing to time constraints collecting in Loblolly Unit and Menard Creek was minimal, and no new collecting was done in the other corridor units (Pine Island Bayou, Upper Neches, and Lower Neches). Between June 2001 and December 2006, a database of 8095 specimen records was compiled. The database contains 1384 valid names representing 1264 distinct taxa in 536 genera and 146 families . From the database, final species and specimen tables were generated. A total of 7198 specimens were delivered to Dale Kruse, Curator, Tracey Herbarium at Texas A&M University (TAES) on April 6, 2007. In this report we describe methods used in constructing the database, the collectors, and the unit-level collection efforts. A species-by-unit table is presented; collection results are compared with Watson (1982), and there is an examination of variation in species richness among units. -

Extinction. Colonization, and Persistence of Rare Vascular Flora in the Longleaf Pine Wiregrass Ecosystem: Responses to Fire Frequency and Population Size Janet Bracey Gray RESEARCH ARTICLE ABSTRACT: We examined factors likely to be important in management of rare flora of the longleaf pine-wiregrass ecosystem on Fort Bragg and Camp Mackall Military Reservations in North Carolina, USA. We documented 1,268 occurrences of thirty-six rare plant species during two inventories • conducted from 1991 to 1993 and 1998 to 1999. Of these occurrences, 891 (70.3%) persisted, 258 (20.3%) went extinct, and 119 (9.4%) colonized between the first and second inventories; extinctions exceeded colonizations by 139 occurrences. We used analyses of contingency table frequencies and Extinction, logistic regressions to test hypotheses about temporal responses of local occurrences of rare flora. We found statistically significant effects of fire frequency on the colonization and extinction of rare flora; extinctions declined and colonizations increased with increasing fire frequency. There were statistically Colonization, and significant effects of both area occupied and stem number on the persistence and extinction of rare flora; extinctions declined and persistences increased with increasing area occupied and stem number. Our Persistence of Rare analyses emphasize the importance of fire and population size for the conservation of rare flora in this landscape.
