Of the former, we might mention the splendid varieties of Cercis, with their purple flowers, the Acacias, with their airy foliage and silky stamens, the Pride of India, Colutea, and Cæsalpina, with a host of others, which, like the Sweet Pea, are redolent with perfume. Of the latter, the beans, peas, lentils, clover, and lucerne, are too well known to require recommendation. Among timber trees, the Rosewood (a Brazilian species of Mimosa), the Laburnum, whose wood is durable and of an olive-green color, and the Locust of our own country are preëminent. The following are a few important officinal products of this order. In medicine; liquorice is the product of the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra of S. Europe. The purgative senna consists of leaves of Cassia Senna, C. acutifolia, C. Æthiopica, and other species of Egypt and Arabia. C. Marilandica is also a cathartic, but more mild than the former. The sweet pulp tamarind, is the product of a large and beautiful tree (Tamarindus Indica) of the E. and W. Indies. Resins and Balsams: Gum Senegal is yielded by Acacia Verek of the River Senegal; Gum Arabic, by several species of Acacia of Central Africa; Gum Tragacynth, by Astragalus verus, &c., Persia. -

Bridges ABSTRACT Laurel Wilt Disease (LWD) has caused severe mortality in native Persea species of the southeastern United States since it was first detected in 2003. This study was designed to document the range-wide population impacts to LWD, as well as the patterns of mortality and regeneration in Persea ecosystems. I used Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the U.S. Forest Service to estimate Persea borbonia (red bay) populations from 2003 to 2011 to see if any decline could be observed since the introduction of LWD causal agents. -

The performance of taxonomic names and concepts to act as identifiers of changing taxonomic content is analyzed and visualized using a novel Answer Set Programming reasoning approach. The Euler/ASP toolkit is applied to a use case of eight succeeding classifications, ranging from 1889 to 2006, of a 'complex' of grasses in the genus Andropogon in the Caroli- nas and surrounding areas. Based on an input of 64 constituent concepts and 131 Region Connection Calculus articulations provided by an expert taxonomist, nine pairwise and logically consistent alignments are inferred and visualized as merge tax- onomies that reflect the hierarchical relationships of congruent and non-congruent taxonomic concepts. The respectively valid names are integrated with these results, thus permitting quantitative assessments of name/concept resolution. Accordingly, 65.2% of 46 possible instances of congruence were realized in the alignments. Incongruent concepts were twice as common as their counterparts. Usages of different names failed to continuously identify congruent concepts in 66.7% of 30 cases, and the same names incorrectly identified incongruent concepts in 33.9% of 59 cases. Concept-level articulations can take into account both member- and property-based information when identifying similarities and differences between succeeding taxonomic perspectives. -
