Beug: Chair, NAMA Toxicology Committee Assessing the degree of amatoxin mushroom poisoning in North America is very challenging. Understanding the potential for various treatment practices is even more daunting. Although I have been studying mushroom poisoning for 45 years now, my own views on potential best treatment practices are still evolving. While my training in enzyme kinetics helps me understand the literature about amatoxin poisoning treatments, my lack of medical training limits me. Fortunately, critical comments from six different medical doctors have been incorporated in this article. All six, each concerned about different aspects in early drafts, returned me to the peer reviewed scientific literature for additional reading. There remains no known specific antidote for amatoxin poisoning. There have not been any gold standard double-blind placebo controlled studies. There never can be. When dealing with a potentially deadly poisoning (where in many non-western countries the amatoxin fatality rate exceeds 50%) treating of half of all poisoning patients with a placebo would be unethical. Using amatoxins on large animals to test new treatments (theoretically a great alternative) has ethical constraints on the experimental design that would most likely obscure the answers researchers sought. We must thus make our best judgement based on analysis of past cases. Although that number is now large enough that we can make some good assumptions, differences of interpretation will continue. Nonetheless, we may be on the cusp of reaching some agreement. Towards that end, I have contacted several Poison Centers and NAMA will be working with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). -

These fungal isolates were analyzed based on their morphological characteristics and the molecular phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA sequences. On the basis of their morphology and phylogeny, KNU17-1 and KNU17-199 isolates were identified as Albifimbria verrucaria and Deconica coprophila, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, A. verrucaria and D. coprophila have not yet been reported in Korea. Thus, this is the first report of these species in Korea. The altitude ranges from 50 to Macrofungi (Mushrooms) play an important role in 1960 m (m.s.l.). The list includes all species published till year 2011. Twenty-one genera and 251 species were recorded, 121 species from the family Coprinaceae and 130 from Strophariaceae. KEY WORDS—Agaricomycetes, Coprinus, Psathyrella, Psilocybe, Stropharia Introduction This is the second checklist of the Argentine Agaricales. Previous one considered the families Amanitaceae, Pluteaceae and Hygrophoraceae (Niveiro & Albertó, 2012). Argentina is located in southern South America, between 21° and 55° S and 53° and 73° W, covering 3.7 million of km². Due to the large size of the country, Argentina has a wide variety of climates (Niveiro & Albertó, 2012). The incidence of moist winds coming from the oceans, the Atlantic in the north and the Pacific in the south, together with different soil types, make possible the existence of many types of vegetation adapted to different climatic conditions (Brown et al., 2006). Mycologists who studied the Agaricales from Argentina during the last century were reviewed by Niveiro & Albertó (2012). It is considered that the knowledge of the group is still incomplete, since many geographic areas in Argentina have not been studied as yet. The checklist provided here establishes a baseline of knowledge about the diversity of species described from Coprinaceae and Strophariaceae families in Argentina, and serves as a resource for future studies of mushroom biodiversity. -

Zusammenfassung: Es wird ein Überblick über den Wissensstand der Gattungen Deconica, Leratio- myces und Psilocybe in Österreich gegeben. Ein Schlüssel für die in Europa vorkommenden Arten der drei Gattungen, Zeichnungen der mikroskopischen Merkmale sowie Farbabbildungen werden angefügt. Die Serie über das Vorkommen und den aktuellen Wissensstand über einzelne Gattun- gen der Makromyceten in Österreich wird in dieser Arbeit mit den Gattungen Deconica, Leratiomyces und Psilocybe fortgesetzt. Bezüglich früherer Arbeiten wird auf die Auflis- tungen in HAUSKNECHT & KRISAI-GREILHUBER (2009, 2010) und auf HAUSKNECHT (2012) verwiesen. Psilocybe wurde erstmals von FRIES (1821) verwendet, und zwar als Agaricus tri- bus Psilocybe FR. Auch die Gattung Stropharia, aus der zwischenzeitlich einige Arten in Psilocybe überführt wurden, geht – als Agaricus subgen. -

SOMANEWS From the Sonoma County Mycological Association VOLUME 28: 7 MARCH 2016 SOMA Speaker: Catharine Adams March 17 At the Sonoma County Farm Bureau “How the Death Cap Mushroom Conquered the World” Cat Adams is interested in how chemical ecology in- fluences interactions between plants and fungi. For her PhD in Tom Bruns’ lab, Cat is studying the inva- sive ectomycorrhizal fungus, Amanita phalloides. The death cap mushroom kills more people than any oth- er mushroom, but how the deadly amatoxins influ- ence its invasion remains unexplored. Previously, Cat earned her M.A. with Anne Pringle at Harvard University. Her thesis examined fungal pathogens of the wild Bolivian chili pepper, Capsi- cum chacoense, and how the fungi evolved tolerance to spice. With the Joint Genome Institute, she is now sequencing the genome of one fungal isolate, a Pho- mopsis species, to better understand the novel en- zymes these fungi wield to outwit their plant host.
