A Character Type in the Plays of Edward Bond Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Frank A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Jon Erickson, Advisor Richard Green Joy Reilly Copyright by Frank Anthony Torma 2010 Abstract To evaluate a young firebrand later in his career, as this dissertation attempts in regard to British playwright Edward Bond, is to see not the end of fireworks, but the fireworks no longer creating the same provocative results. Pursuing a career as a playwright and theorist in the theatre since the early 1960s, Bond has been the exciting new star of the Royal Court Theatre and, more recently, the predictable producer of plays displaying the same themes and strategies that once brought unsettling theatre to the audience in the decades past. The dissertation is an attempt to evaluate Bond, noting his influences, such as Beckett, Brecht, Shakespeare, and the postmodern, and charting the course of his career alongside other dramatists when it seems appropriate. Edward Bond‟s characters of Len in Saved, the Gravedigger‟s Boy in Lear, Leonard in In the Company of Men, and the character in a number of other Bond plays provide a means to understand Bond‟s aesthetic and political purposes. Len is a jumpy young man incapable of bravery; the Gravedigger‟s Boy is the earnest young man destroyed too early by total war; Leonard is a needy, spoiled youth destroyed by big business. -

GUTES TUN 1,3: BRECHTIAN THEORY AND CONTEMPORARY DIDACTIC THEATER by ERICA MARIE HAAS (Under the Direction of Martin Kagel) ABSTRACT The play Gutes Tun 1,3 (2005), written and performed by Anne Tismer and Rahel Savoldelli, lends to comparison to the works of Bertolt Brecht: Tismer and Savoldelli aim to educate the audience about social issues, using Brechtian performance techniques such as Verfremdung to relay their ideas. However, upon closer examination, it is clear that Gutes Tun 1,3 ultimately diverges from Brechtian theory, especially with regard to the way that social messages are conveyed. Weill, Kurt (Julian)
Weill, Kurt (Julian) (b Dessau, 2 March 1900; d New York, 3 April 1950). German composer, American citizen from 1943. He was one of the outstanding composers in the generation that came to maturity after World War I, and a key figure in the development of modern forms of musical theatre. His successful and innovatory work for Broadway during the 1940s was a development in more popular terms of the exploratory stage works that had made him the foremost avant- garde theatre composer of the Weimar Republic. 1. Life. Weill‟s father Albert was chief cantor at the synagogue in Dessau from 1899 to 1919 and was himself a composer, mostly of liturgical music and sacred motets. Kurt was the third of his four children, all of whom were from an early age taught music and taken regularly to the opera. Despite its strong Wagnerian emphasis, the Hoftheater‟s repertory was broad enough to provide the young Weill with a wide range of music-theatrical experiences which were supplemented by the orchestra‟s subscription concerts and by much domestic music-making. Weill began to show an interest in composition as he entered his teens. By 1915 the evidence of a creative bent was such that his father sought the advice of Albert Bing, the assistant conductor at the Hoftheater. Bing was so impressed by Weill‟s gifts that he undertook to teach him himself. For three years Bing and his wife, a sister of the Expressionist playwright Carl Sternheim, provided Weill with what almost amounted to a second home and introduced him a world of metropolitan sophistication. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT This thesis explores aspects of Brecht's adaptations of Shakespeare's plots and rhetoric while focusing particularly on matters of structural influence. Both authors use metafictional references in their plays to foreground a stylised artificiality, thereby pointing to the interaction of social and literary semiotics. These 'alienating' strategies expose the construction and the limitations of ideologies presented in a play, demanding recognition of the dialectical processes thus engaged. The study of Brecht's theory and practice against the background of Shakespeare's drama produces new insight into B:recht's works; similarly, Shakespeare's plays viewed against the background of Brecht's theatre and dramatic theory provide new insight into Shakespeare's literary practice. -

Prof. Dr. Hülya Adak Keywords: Bertolt Brecht, epic theatre, performativity, gender, affect This thesis presents a gender-oriented critique of Bertolt Brecht’s theory of epic theatre and his two plays: Mother Courage and Her Children and, The Good Person of Szechwan. Feminist theatre scholars often criticize Brecht’s plays for not paying enough attention to gender issues and merely focusing on a class-based agenda. The main issues that these scholars highlight regarding Brecht’s plays and theory include the manipulation of female figures through functionalizing them in order to achieve certain political goals. Other criticisms focus on how female characters are desubjectified and/or desexualized through this instrumentalism. On the other hand, feminist critics also consider epic theater techniques to be useful in feminist performances. Considering all these earlier criticisms, this thesis aims to offer new perspectives for the gender- focused analysis of epic theatre and Brecht’s later plays. Similar to many other criticisms, I conclude that the embedded instrumentalism of epic theater techniques such as materializing and functionalizing the issues as well as the characters, in most cases leads to stereotyping the female characters. -

Sep. 2021 A Perplexing Pilgrimage: The Spectator as Mitreisender in the Tanztheater of Pina Bausch By Janis Campbell Daly, BA (Hons), MA A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of PhD School of Arts Roehampton University University of Surrey July 2009 Abstract Focusing on spectator issues and performative processes in postmodern dance performance, the thesis offers a new ecological approach for the analysis of dance based on the premiss that the spectator’s interactive role as Mitreisender or ‘fellow traveller’ in Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater is integral to the creation of the live experience and to a realisation of her work in performance. Centred on the multi- faceted role of Mitreisender as intrinsic to Bausch’s collaborative approach, the limited scope of phenomenological discourse to spectator-centred accounts highlights the need for a broader analytical approach to address the interactive dialectic between spectator, performer and their sensory environment and their physiological engagement in Bausch’s interrogative, exploratory processes. -
