Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. AS: Ian Richardson, thank you very much for coming in to the British Library this morning. I am very happy to have the opportunity to interview you. Before we start can I just ask your permission to place this recording in the British Library archives? IR: You of course have my permission to do precisely that. AS: Thank you very much. Ian Richardson, what was your very first experience with the theatre, and was there anything in particular that made you become an actor? IR: My very first experience was actually nothing to do with the theatre but it was certainly theatrical. I must have been about ten or eleven, and in this country - and I am sure in other countries as well - you have church services to acknowledge the armistice of both world wars. And it was the custom for the school to go on Armistice Day and for one pupil to be chosen to… read a lesson or read a bit of poetry and that kind of thing in front of the assembled congregation. And it was my turn, and the piece was Binyon’s ‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. -
