MISSION from Michael Davie The Church of England periodically stirs itself into initiatives to try and get people into its orbit. The latest is Shaping for Mission. Mission before the sixteenth cen- tury denoted the sending of the Son and the Holy Spirit by the Father, but in wider DOMESTIC / INDUSTRIAL / COMMERCIAL / AGRICULTURAL use graduated to mean the act of sending and later still to an assigned task (as in ‘Mission accomplished’). What therefore does the Church of England aim to • Septic Tank Emptying • Interceptor Emptying achieve? • Blocked Drains • Flood Assistance The Church of England, and some other churches, has five marks of mission: to • CCTV Camera Surveys • Sewer Jetting proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom (essentially Evangelism): to teach, bap- tise and nurture new believers; to respond to human need by loving service: to • Gully Emptying • 24/7 Emergency Callout seek to transform unjust structures of society and challenge violence of every kind whilst pursuing peace and reconciliation: to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth. These constitute three groups. The first two marks relate to getting people into church society. The third mark is effectively neutral addressing how society in general should behave. The last two marks are essentially political. Since one person’s view of life may seem unjust to another, the challenge to violence and pursuit of peace were added to the fourth CALL SCOTT ON 07581 384345 mark precisely to clarify what ‘unjust structures’ might mean. The last mark calls WWW.FREEFLOWDRAINAGELTD.CO.UK for a green agenda whilst keeping the methods vague. The Dissolution of the monasteries and the suppres- sion of the Orthodox Church in Communist Russia are two examples. And yet in both cases the church survived. The reasons for their survival have been the sub- ject of many studies, but three themes recur: the attraction of symbols for the pop- ulation, the clinging to tradition and opposition to tyranny. In a western democra- cy the last becomes of lesser importance, though the fourth mark of mission ad- dresses this. In addressing how to progress into the 21st century, the Church of England may well be pondering how to maintain its symbolic attraction and tradi- tions whilst maintaining harmony with the secular power in its efforts to promote evangelism.

The WI Community Spirit Lives on through the Covid-19 Pandemic NATIONAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting was held virtually at the beginning of June. The day was- n’t quite the trip for Gillian to the Royal Albert Hall as initially planned. She ‘attended’ via Zoom from the comfort of home. The Chair of NFWI praised members for their resilience working from home and continuing the WI during a very difficult year, noting necessity is the mother of invention and we have risen to the challenge and found new ways of doing things. Lynne also thanked the many members involved in the sewing of PPE for healthcare workers. This year, NFWI provided many online activities and events that were well supported. Work on past resolutions continued during the pandemic. Among the many successes were the bus survey and report being used by a Select Committee for Transport and also the WI becoming Secretariat for to a new cross party group on micro plastics. Campaigns in Wales include the very successful Heritage project where over 5,000 trees have been surveyed and over 6,000 new ones planted. This year’s proposed resolution is a call to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer. If diagnosed early the survival rate is good, but signs are subtle and can often be confused with other symptoms and overlooked until it’s too late. If passed, a full campaign would be developed by the NFWI. Guest speakers were HRH The Countess of Wessex, Dame Cressida Dick, commissioner for the Metropolitan police and The Rt Hon Baroness Brenda Hale of Richmond, recently retired president of the Supreme Court of the UK. —-oOo—- West Felton’s June meeting was held in the Punch Bowl garden where mem- bers enjoyed getting together for the first time in many months. Numbers were carefully monitored to follow the Govt. guidelines but that did not damp- en the celebratory atmosphere.
