The fundamental changes in ownership also led to a number of major challenges. Existing structures had to be completely reorganised, a task which Unique (Flughafen Zürich AG) successfully mastered. We were able to extract all the airside functions and infrastructures that are essential for airport business from the operations previously controlled by SAirGroup and now under new ownership, and bring them under our own control.This means that we have eliminated all inter- connections with and dependencies on external providers in the area of airside operations. We can therefore look back on a period of extremely intensive activity. But we still have a very busy time ahead of us, partly due to the step-by-step hand-over of components associated with expansion stage 5, but also in view of the political uncertainties throughout the world and their impacts on international civil aviation, and the ongoing debate on the home front concerning the function, size and operation of Zurich Airport. -

From the domestic reactions to the first symptoms of the malady-the detours to Havana in the early 1960's-to the strengthened do- mestic and internationalresponse to the epidemic at the turn of the decade, Secretary Volpe and Mr. Stewart here catalogue a definitive statement of what has been done and what yet must be done to combat air piracy and international blackmail: the legal and scientific devices employed by the U.S. and urged for other countries, and international cooperation such as in the Tokyo Convention, the Hague Conventiont of December, 1970, and the draft conventions remaining on the internationalagenda. -

The development and diffusion of computer reservation systems (CRS) and global distribution systems (GDS) is discussed extensively in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of business in the 2000s. Based on this evaluation, the influence of modern information and communication technology (ICT) on the airline distribution system environ- ment is discussed. -

How Do Airlines Perceive That Strategic Alliances Affect Their Individual Branding?

Konstantinos Kalligiannis Cranfield University Bedford, United Kingdom Kostas Iatrou Hellenic Aviation Society Athens, Greece Keith Mason Cranfield University Bedford, United Kingdom ABSTRACT Much research has been carried out to evaluate the impact of strategic alliance membership on the performance of airlines. However it would be of interest to identify how airlines perceive this impact in terms of branding by each of the three global alliance groupings. It is the purpose of this paper to gather the opinion of airlines, belonging to the three strategic alliance groups, on the impact that the strategic alliance brands have had on their individual brands and how do they perceive that this impact will change in the future. To achieve this, a comprehensive survey of the alliance management and marketing departments of airlines participating in the three global strategic alliances was required. The results from this survey give an indication whether the strategic airline alliances, which are often referred to as marketing agreements, enhance, damage or have no impact on the individual airline brands. Konstantinos Kalligiannis is a Ph.D. candidate at Cranfield University (on Airline Branding inconsistencies within the Airline Alliances) and holds a M.Sc. in Airport Planning and Management from Loughborough University, a M.Sc. in Air Transport Management from Cranfield University and a B.A. in Business Administration from Luton University. Konstantinos is also working as an aviation consultant and airport planner. His key areas of expertise include air traffic forecasts, airport planning, feasibility studies and business plans for start up airlines. -

Ghobrial: Competition for Hub Dominance: Some Implications to Airline Profi COMPETITION FOR HUB DOMINANCE: SOME IMPLICATIONS TO AIRLINE PROFITABILITY AND ENPLANEMENT SHARE Atef Ghobrial ABSTRACT The phenomenon ofairline competition for hub dominance in terms offrequency concentration has been on the rise since deregulation. Using cross-sectional time-series data, this study explores the impact of hub dominance on airline profitability and enplanement share at the hub airport. The regression analysis finds a significantpositive relationship between airline profitability and hub dominance. The relationship between an airline's share ofpassenger enplanements and its hub dominance seems to follow an S-curve indicating that high frequency shares are associated with even higher enplanement shares, and conversely. This paper chose China Eastern Airlines as a case study, evaluating its hub connectivity under a dual-hub circumstance in Shanghai. The paper detected that the biggest constraint of China Eastern Airlines’ dual-hub situation lied in Shanghai’s location and the restricted transfer options on international routes. Contributions from alliance partners were assessed and benchmarked with China Eastern Airlines. With China Southern Airlines quit SkyTeam alliance, China Eastern Airlines faced more challenges on the domestic market. The empirical study also pointed out the shortcoming of operating at two hubs in the same catchment area, where the quality of connectivity of inter-hub connections cannot be maintained as high as a single-hub transfer. However, the market potential of inter-hub connections in Shanghai was identified with a considerable amount of viable connections.
