This Observatory of European Contemporary Litera- ture sets annual themes of interest and commissions international correspondents and writers to provi- de contributions on these topics; via the website www.literaturhauseuropa.eu it also publishes their blogs on various aspects of literature as well as literature in general. Quarterly dossiers give an in- sight into the various perspectives in the different countries, and lastly, every autumn a panel of experts and writers debates themes at the European Litera- ture Days symposium, which is held in the convivial atmosphere of Wachau. The new series «Trends in European Contemporary Literature» summarizes the key texts and discussions from the current year and endeavours to compile in- formative overviews. Here, the focus is on a process of dialogue, debate and writing about literature, so- ciety, education and media technology. -
Addition to Summer Letter
May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

The project addresses social networking platforms (primarily Twitter and Facebook) and those who serve and critique their interests (authors, readers, academics, “everyday people,” national archives, celebrities and filmmakers), often focusing on the “meta” of the media they take as their focus: “extratexts,” reviews and interviews, tweets about books and books about tweets, critical reception, etc. By examining writing on and about social media, this work offers an alternative, context-specific approach to new media scholarship that, in its examination of things said and unsaid, will help inform our contemporary understanding of social media and, by extension, our social media experience. iii Abstract This sandwich thesis of works published from 2010 – 2017 takes up the discursive articulation of “social media” as a mobilizing concept in relation to a variety of other concerns: authorship and popular fiction, writing and publishing, archives and everyday life, celebrity and the opaque morality of media promotion. -

Twitter Fiction: A Shift in Author Function Hilary Hyman Twitter fiction, an example of twenty-first century digital narrative, allows authors to experiment with literary form, production, and dissemination as they engage readers through a communal network. Twitter offers creative space for both professionals and amateurs to publish fiction digitally, enabling greater collaboration among authors and readers. Examining Jennifer Egan’s “Black Box” and selected Twitter stories from Junot Diaz, Teju Cole, and Elliott Holt, this thesis establishes two distinct types of Twitter fiction—one produced for the medium and one produced through it—to consider how Twitter’s present feed and character limit fosters a uniquely interactive reading experience. As the conversational medium calls for present engagement with the text and with the author, Twitter promotes newly elastic relationships between author and reader that renegotiate the former boundaries between professionals and amateurs. This thesis thus considers how works of Twitter fiction transform the traditional author function and pose new questions regarding digital narrative’s modes of existence, circulation, and appropriation. As digital narrative makes its way onto democratic forums, a shifted author function leaves us wondering what it means to be an author in the digital age. Dr Wojciech Drąg MA Seminar: The Experiment in Contemporary Literature and Culture in English The subject of the proposed seminar is a broadly defined artistic experiment – with particular emphasis on literature – covering the formal and thematic layer of the work. Analytical tools will be taken from genre methodologies, narratology, visuality studies, multimodality and linguistics. Although the seminar will focus on unconventional texts, participants will have the opportunity to pursue a broader spectrum of topics according to their own interests. Experimental literature is a very capacious category. The authors of The Routledge Companion to Experimental Literature note that it includes both spontaneous improvisation and a rigorous adherence to self-imposed rules, accidental composition and a meticulously planned construction, digital as well as hand-made production. In each variety, experimental literature poses questions about what literature is, what it can be, and what its limits are. It looks for new possibilities while rejecting conventions, schemes and clichés. In the first two decades of the twenty-first century, we can observe a rise of experimental literature both in the United States and Great Britain, as evidenced by the popularity of such authors as David Mitchell, Ali Smith, Jonathan Safran-Foer and Dave Eggers. In recent years, experimental literature seems to be leaving the niche of the avant-garde and to be moving towards the mainstream, as exemplified by the success of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, which was made into a high-budget film by Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski siblings, and of Safran-Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, whose film adaptation starred Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. -

The American Character Project will examine and celebrate the extraordinary people, culture, history and experiences that make our country unique. It will serve as a guiding, artistic principle for Asolo Rep over the next five seasons. The 2012-2013 season will feature an all American Character season, and the following four seasons will feature select productions that explore, embody, and attempt to define what it truly means to be an American. The project will also increase the commitment to new American playwriting, and Asolo Rep will produce at least one world premiere each season. “The American Character Project is a five year artistic initiative that poses a series of galvanizing questions: what is the American character? How did it come to be? What is its nature? How has it evolved into what it is now? DOI: <https://doi.org/10.5565/rev/analisi.3236> Abstract 21st-century journalism is characterized by new trends that facilitate the production of digital and novel contents. Among them, most notable is data-driven journalism, which collects structured information and analyzes it in-depth to present it in more versatile formats through interactive visualizations and other multimedia tools. This specialty serves to tell stories based on vast amounts of information that, without the assistance of a computer and the application of statistical methods, would be challenging to report. This work is a pilot study about the degree of penetration of data journalism through a com- parative study of the journalistic media of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. For this pur- pose, an exploratory pilot questionnaire investigated the processes and techniques used by journalists in the preparation of publications in digital media of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, in order to determine whether they apply data journalism from the defining elements that Paul Bradshaw establishes in his inverted pyramid of data jour- nalism. The findings pointed out that journalists from these countries vary in the level of frequency of use of the five characteristic functions, of which the analysis of databases is the most used by all. -
