Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

LANCASTER UNIVERSITY Popular Music, the Christian Story, and the Quest for Ontological Security David John Gillard MA (Distinction) A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies In Fulfilment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) DEPARTMENT OF POLITICS, PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION OCTOBER 2019 Abstract Popular Music, the Christian Story, and the Quest for Ontological Security David John Gillard MA A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies In Fulfilment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) October 2019 The crisis of socialisation into Christian belief is, in part, evidence of Western secularisation. Added to this, there is evidence of significant existential restlessness. Moreover, many individuals feel alienated from the Church, which has been the historic Western provider of a discourse offering ontological security. Such restlessness finds emotional expression within a popular music culture that frequently interrogates Christian belief. It is argued here that not only is there a hegemonic resistance to Christian discourse, but that the Church inadvertently colludes with these forces, favouring its historic, rationalistic methods of evangelism, the effectiveness of which is now limited. This thesis offers a model to redress aspects of this disconnect, arguing for the significance of affective spaces within which spiritual reflection is encouraged. Using Zygmunt Bauman’s sociology of liquid modernity the thesis considers the fluid nature of Western society. In particular, it explores the ways in which popular music articulates core themes in a society in which individuals are effectively bricoleurs, drawing from popular culture in order to tactically resist hegemony. Central to the discussion is the idea that humans are ‘hard wired’ to develop a sense of self in a proto-musical manner.

  • “You Need a Big God” Fascinating Interactions Between Music and Religion PRELUDE
Natalie Fritz and Anna-Katharina Höpflinger “You Need a Big God” Fascinating Interactions between Music and Religion PRELUDE Abstract The interactions between popular music and religion are manyfold and highly com- plex. Popular music as an important part of popular culture is a means of communi- cation. Music can transmit not only emotions and a sense of community but also re- ligious knowledge, knowledge that leaves diverse traces in different times and places. In the end, whether we extract religious meaning from popular music and what that meaning is depend on our background and on our capacity to contextualise symbols, motives and narratives – and also on the media used to convey these references. By analysing Florence + The Machines song “Big God” and its music video we will address some of the questions that arise while working in the field of popular music and re- ligion. Keywords Popular Music, Florence + the Machine, Religion, Meaning Making, Audio-Visual Me- dia, Big God, Culture Biographies Natalie Fritz holds a Ph.D in the Study of Religions. Her research interests focus on the various interactions between media and religion. She currently works as a journalist at the Catholic Media Centre in Zurich and teaches media ethics at the universities of applied sciences in Chur and Berne. Anna-Katharina Höpflinger is a lecturer at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Mu- nich. After completing her Ph.D in the Study of Religion, she has developed different research projects in the field of media and religion, particularly focusing on body, clothing, and gender. She is also interested in religions in the ancient world and in European history, in Heavy Metal and religion, and in charnel chapels.

high as hope florence and the machine album download High as hope florence and the machine album download. High as Hope Download Florence and The Machine Full leaked Album. Download link in MP3 ZIP/RAR formats High as Hope is the fourth studio album by the English indie rock band Florence and the Machine, released on 29 June 2018 by Republic Records and Virgin EMI Records. It was preceded by the singles "Sky Full of Song" and "Hunger". "Patricia" was released as the third single of the album on 10 August, 2018. Where there’s EDM excess, there’ll probably be a sedate comedown one album later—or, in Florence and the Machine’s case, two of them. High as Hope, like predecessor How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and the group’s MTV Unplugged stint, is supposed to be Welch’s requisite stripped-down, personal album. Unlike How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, it actually has a claim. But the first single from High As Hope suggested that, this time, she might mean it. Sky Full of Song dials things down considerably compared with the florid arrangements and bug-eyed vocals of What Kind of Man?, the song that introduced How Big How Blue How Beautiful. The orchestra are present but hovering in the distance behind a muted double-bass. The Choir of the Massed Florences are in a subdued mood, the vocals so close-miked that you can hear her breathing between lines. There is a sense of someone who realised that heading any further down the path of her previous albums might have led her into the realms of self-parody.
