Where there’s EDM excess, there’ll probably be a sedate comedown one album later—or, in Florence and the Machine’s case, two of them. High as Hope, like predecessor How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and the group’s MTV Unplugged stint, is supposed to be Welch’s requisite stripped-down, personal album. Unlike How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, it actually has a claim. But the first single from High As Hope suggested that, this time, she might mean it. Sky Full of Song dials things down considerably compared with the florid arrangements and bug-eyed vocals of What Kind of Man?, the song that introduced How Big How Blue How Beautiful. The orchestra are present but hovering in the distance behind a muted double-bass. The Choir of the Massed Florences are in a subdued mood, the vocals so close-miked that you can hear her breathing between lines. There is a sense of someone who realised that heading any further down the path of her previous albums might have led her into the realms of self-parody. The album cover and official tracklist were announced along with the release of the album’s lead single, Hunger. Speaking about the album, Florence describes that she aimed for a more positive message for love and life, in contrast to her heartbreak last record How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. High as Hope, like predecessor How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and the group’s MTV Unplugged stint, is supposed to be Welch’s requisite stripped-down, personal album. Unlike How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, it actually has a claim. The rafter-shaking anthems still exist, but they’re less often belted but delivered conversationally, like a frank chat with a friend who just happens to chat at top decibel. It’s also a Florence and the Machine album with every song produced with Emile Haynie, which also says it all. Like Jeff Bhasker or Alex da Kid, Haynie has a signature style: enormous ballads made of dusty air, like the dregs of Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die or multiple Eminem ballads. It’s boring as bombast. Some artists can make that work, like FKA twigs, who knows how to work with space, or Kanye West’s Runaway, which is meant to sound empty. Florence + the Machine has dropped a new song Hunger today (May 4), along with the news that the band’s fourth studio album High As Hope will be released on June 29 (Republic Records). This song is about the ways we look for love in things that are perhaps not love, and how attempts to feel less alone can sometimes isolate us more, Florence Welch says of the new track. I guess I made myself more vulnerable in this song to encourage connection, because perhaps a lot more of us feel this way than we are able to admit. Kamasi Washington, Sampha, Tobias Jesso Jr, Kelsey Lu and Jamie xx are also featured collaborators. Florence + the Machine previously released the single Sky Full of Song on April 12. The band also announced they’ll play six intimate tour dates in the US and UK later this month, and will be opening for The Rolling Stones in London on May 25. Watch the video for Hunger. Alternative darlings Florence + The Machine delivers an enjoyable, impressive, and well-rounded fourth studio album with ‘High as Hope. Following a three-year hiatus, Florence + The Machine are back! In 2015, Florence Welch and company compelled with What Kind of Man, arguably the crowning achievement from their third LP, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. After releasing singles Sky Full of Song, Hunger, and Big God, the collective’s fourth album, High as Hope finally arrives. All in all, the results stellar. Florence and the Machine’s previous albums have been operatic, dramatic and otherworldly. In High As Hope, Welch managed to come back down to earth, and into herself. While the band’s first three records boasted elemental and celestial imagery and metaphors, Welch takes a realist approach to lyrics, and a minimalist one to instrumental on her latest effort. There is no smoke and mirrors here, simply the naked truth. The first single, Sky Full Of Song, sets the scene for the album. Thematically the album deals with topics that are more personal, and less complex than previous records; family, youth and the passage of time. Welch’s lyrics read like the words of an aged and mature woman, looking back on her turbulent years with a sensible head. A quiet femininity is reflected in the sound and visuals of the album. To make fourth album 'High As Hope', Florence Welch headed home. Crafting the first stages of the record in her house in Peckham, she cycled every day into the South London hotspot's creative hub, the Bussey Building, to - as she put it - "bang on the wall with sticks". Or someone's, anyhow. It's cool, though - you'll forgive her, 'cause that's just Flo, y'know? Florence + The Machine – High As Hope (2018) [ FLAC ] The album was executively produced by Welch herself, along with Emile Haynie. Following How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful (2015), High as Hope features more minimalist, stripped-down productions, and explores themes of heartache, family, and finding comfort in loneliness. The album received positive reviews upon release, with music critics lauding Welch’s vocal performance and personal lyricism. For Florence + the Machine’s fourth full-length, High as Hope, Florence Welch digs deep, meditating on the highs used to fill the holes in our souls, be it drugs, alcohol, reckless love, or spirituality. Over the course of this concise and cohesive journey, she discovers life is about learning to live in the space between the extremes, embracing the normalcy of that middle ground between passionate highs and empty lows. Gone is the sun- splashed grandeur of How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and the anthemic bombast of Lungs and Ceremonials. The Patti Smith ode “Patricia” and the stomping “100 Years” come the closest to past heights, but otherwise, High as Hope sticks close to the heart of a newly sober and reflective Welch. Arranged as a clean linear narrative, the album opens with “June,” wherein Welch faces the loneliness of fame and her coping mechanisms. She reveals a teenage eating disorder and drug and alcohol addictions on “Hunger” and returns home to revisit where they all started on “South London Forever.” On the string- and horn-drenched “Big God” — featuring Kamasi Washington, among others — Welch even considers a higher power to fill the void.
