  • The Sheepdogs Have at It Synopsis
THE SHEEPDOGS HAVE AT IT SYNOPSIS The Sheepdogs Have At It joins the Rolling Stone cover winners at the apex of their newfound fame and a crossroads in their careers. One might think that newfound fame would lead successful young rock stars to rest on their laurels, but nothing could be further from the truth. More than ever, with the whole world watching, the Sheepdogs need to get down to business. We join the band at their Saskatoon homecoming show in October 2011. They’ve returned for the first time since winning the Rolling Stone cover contest, this time as the opening act for Kings of Leon. We meet them and see them play for thousands of fans, their biggest audience yet. But the big task is still ahead. In January, The Sheepdogs go into a Nashville studio to record their new album, now backed by Atlantic records. Patrick Carney of The Black Keys is producing the record, and the guys have only 17 days to lay down the new tracks. This story follows the Sheepdogs into the studio as this task is carried to fruition, while alternating between the band’s current tour around the continent. There is a staggering amount of work to be done and the guys needs to keep on top of it. Occasionally, we take a big jump back in time to the early days of the band. There was a period, less than a year ago, when things weren’t going so well for the Sheepdogs. For seven years, the band had toiled in obscurity with almost no recognition.

In order to understand the correlation between genre and form more thoroughly, this paper provides a taxonomic approach to through-composition in several post-millennial experimental rock genres including post-rock, math-metal, art rock, and neo-prog.

  • TWIST by JODIE BLACKSHAW
About the composer: Jodie Blackshaw grew up in the Riverina, NSW and after completing high school, studied a Bachelor of Music in Composition with Professor Larry Sitsky at the Australian National University, School of Music. Since then, she has worked teaching music to students of all ages and conducting a variety of ensembles in several different settings, from remote country centres to the inner city. The influence of Orff-Schulwerk methodology is a significant influence of Jodie’s teaching practice and composition. In December 2012, Jodie presented the clinic ‘Get off the Podium’ alongside Dr. Mark Fonder of Ithaca College and conductor Professor Craig Kirchhoff at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. This clinic, advocating her unique compositional style and inclusive teaching approach to ensemble, offered directors opportunities to explore musical elements other than melody and harmony. Jodie is passionate about inspiring teachers and musicians to be active in the music making process. Jodie won the inaugural Frank Ticheli Composition Contest earning her publication of a Grade 1 piece Whirlwind. Whirlwind was premièred at the Midwest clinic in 2006 and now appears on several state band lists. A second work, Terpsichorean Dances was awarded 2nd place in ‘Category 2’ of the same competition. Jodie resides in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia with her husband David and daughter Matilda and works full-time as a composer and appears as a guest clinician and adjudicator for band festivals throughout Australia. Jodie is fanatical about producing quality, meaningful works for band. She desires that her music not just be "another piece, but an educational and spiritual journey for both the players and the director".

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • PAUL WILLIAMS President and Chairman of the Board March 2013 Dear Publisher Member, Enclosed Is
!"#$%&'$$'"() !*+,-.+/0%1/.%231-*41/%56 %03+%751*. March 2013 Dear Publisher Member, Enclosed is your final domestic publisher statement for the 2012 survey year. This statement covers performances from July through September 2012, as well as the full survey year of symphonic, recital and educational concert performances. For the first time, we are including distributions for our new ASCAP OnStage program – an opportunity for you to receive royalties when your music is performed live at venues of all sizes, throughout the country. In addition, we have significantly expanded our survey of satellite radio performances on Sirius XM. I am pleased to announce that ASCAP distributed over $827 million in royalties to our members in 2012, making it the fifth year in a row that ASCAP distributed in excess of $800 million, for a total of over $4 billion paid to ASCAP members. No other performing rights organization can make that claim. ASCAP maintained its high level of royalty payments through careful financial management, which anticipated revenue declines from the radio industry and background music services resulting from the DMX rate court decision. At $941 million, annual revenues were strong – the third highest ever – but down 4.5% from 2011. Cable revenues were up 20%, foreign revenues remained strong, new media and general licensing revenues grew, and our operating expense ratio was down to 11.3% – all factors in mitigating the radio and background service declines. In 2013 and beyond, we look forward to year- over-year revenue growth in domestic revenues and continued strength in foreign revenues. ASCAP music is more popular than ever, especially through the proliferation of online and wireless services.
