Dallas (1978 TV series) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the original 1978–1991 television series. For the sequel, see Dallas (2012 TV series). Dallas is a long-running American prime time television soap opera that aired from April 2, 1978, to May 3, 1991, on CBS. The series revolves around a wealthy and feuding Texan family, the Ewings, who own the independent oil company Ewing Oil and the cattle-ranching land of Southfork. The series originally focused on the marriage of Bobby Ewing and Pamela Barnes, whose families were sworn enemies with each other. As the series progressed, oil tycoon J.R. Ewing grew to be the show's main character, whose schemes and dirty business became the show's trademark.[1] When the show ended in May 1991, J.R. was the only character to have appeared in every episode. The show was famous for its cliffhangers, including the Who shot J.R.? mystery. The 1980 episode Who Done It remains the second highest rated prime-time telecast ever.[2] The show also featured a "Dream Season", in which the entirety of the ninth season was revealed to have been a dream of Pam Ewing's. After 14 seasons, the series finale "Conundrum" aired in 1991. The show had a relatively ensemble cast. Larry Hagman stars as greedy, scheming oil tycoon J.R. Ewing, stage/screen actressBarbara Bel Geddes as family matriarch Miss Ellie and movie Western actor Jim Davis as Ewing patriarch Jock, his last role before his death in 1981. Es gehört zum Common Sense des kapitalistischen Alltagsbewusstseins, dass diejenigen, denen ein größerer Teil des Reichtums, der »ungeheuren Warensammlung« (Karl Marx), vergönnt ist, Ungeheuer sein müssen. Weil der gesamte Alltag darauf beruht, aus Geld mehr Geld zu machen, ist das Verhältnis zum Reichtum im strengen Sinne ambivalent. Zwei gegensätzliche Gefühle rumoren im Inneren des Subjekts: die Verlockungen von Luxus und Müßiggang und das Ressentiment gegen ihre Repräsentanten. Und so spiegelt es die Kulturindustrie den Konsumenten zurück: Zahlreiche Fernsehformate widmen sich dem Leben der »Superreichen«. Allerdings gibt es kaum einen Wohlhabenden in Film und Fernsehen, der nicht moralisch verdorben und skrupellos ist – außer, freilich, er ist Philanthrop. J. R. Ewing ist ein solcher Bösewicht. Als die Serie »Dallas« 1978 startete, gab es nur wenige Darstellungen von Reichtum und Luxus im amerikanischen Fernsehen. Es dominierten das Kleinbürgertum der Mittelklasse, das Arbeitermilieu oder das ländliche Amerika. Nicht nur wegen seines Milieus war »Dallas« für seine Zeit durchaus innovativ. The Daily Brief Podcast: 30 of TV's Most Diversity-Defining Moments 04.02.2018 As a precursor to Tuesday's Multicultural TV Summit in New York City, which focuses on creating content for specific audience segments defined by age, ethnicity or race, gender, nationality or sexual preference, Daily Brief contributor Marc Berman compiled a timeline of some of TV's most important moments of diversity. The list highlights each of the aforementioned defining factors - including two shows featuring TV's favorite redhead, Lucille Ball; four Norman Lear sitcoms; three current series and, of course, Ellen DeGeneres' landmark coming-out episode. The list pinpoints some of the pivotal moments that helped turn today's TV landscape into the melting pot that it is, although there's always work to be done. Critics have sought to name this trend, arguing for the ‘re-quel’ as 15 16 a useful term (Pinkerton 2016, 34). For example, writing in Sight & Sound 17 18 For Peer Review 19 Nick Pinkerton argues that re-quels act simultaneously as sequels and as 20 21 restatements of key elements from their previous textual incarnations.
