The series of events, several of which were filled to capacity, was sponsored by CLUB and provided almost non-stop entertainment during the Weekend. A Wilkommen featured Burgenleander Dancers and an accordianist on Friday night. Saturday's two circus performances sandwiched the parade while a beef and brew supper and German goodtime offset the football game against Wagner College. New on Video &
New On Video & DVD Yes Man Jim Carrey returns to hilarious form with this romantic comedy in the same vein as the Carrey classic Liar Liar. After a few stints in more serious features like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Number 23, Carrey seems right at home playing Carl, a divorcé who starts out the film depressed and withdrawn, scared of taking a risk. Pressured by his best friend, Peter (Bradley Cooper), to get his act together or be stuck with a lonely life, Carl attends a New Age self-help seminar intended to change "no men" like Carl into "yes men" willing to meet life's challenges with gusto. Carl is reluctant at first, but finds the seminar to be ultimately life-changing when he's coerced into giving the "say yes" attitude a try. As the first opportunity to say yes presents itself, Carl hesitantly utters the three-letter word, setting the stage for a domino effect of good rewards, and giving Carrey a platform to show off his comic chops. But over time Carl realizes that saying yes to everything indiscriminately can reap results as complicated and messy as his life had become when saying "no" was his norm. The always-quirky Zooey Deschanel adds her signature charm as Carl's love interest, Allison. An unlikely match at first glance, the pair actually develop great chemistry as the story progresses, the actors play- ing off each other's different styles of humor. Rhys Darby also shines as Carl's loveable but clueless boss, and That 70s Show's Danny Masterson appears as another one of Carl's friends. -
Oscar-Winning Actress Jane Wyman Dies
Oscar-winning actress Jane Wyman dies RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Oscar-winning actress Jane Wyman, once married to future president Ronald Reagan, joined the Catholic Church as an adult and became a benefactor to several Catholic causes. Ms. Wyman died Sept. 10 at her home in Rancho Mirage. The cause of death was not disclosed. While her age was placed at 90, other sources suggested she may have been 93. “The death of Ms. Wyman marks the loss not only of a great actress, but a great woman of faith and a personal friend,” said a Sept. 10 statement from Bishop Gerald R. Barnes of San Bernardino. “Her support of the work of the Catholic Church in the Coachella Valley and the Diocese of San Bernardino made possible many wonderful things, including the Blessed Junipero Serra House of Formation,” Bishop Barnes said. Ms. Wyman also was a strong supporter of Hollywood’s Covenant House and Our Lady of Angels Monastery. She also reportedly went to Mass with fellow Catholic actress Loretta Young, who died in 2000. She won an Oscar for her portrayal of deaf-mute Belinda McDonald, who is made pregnant from rape and becomes a source of scandal, in 1948’s “Johnny Belinda.” She also was nominated three other times for roles in “The Yearling” (1946), as the backwoods wife of Gregory Peck; “The Blue Veil” (1951), as a nursemaid viewed over many decades; and “Magnificent Obsession” (1954), as a blind woman romanced by the playboy who accidentally killed her husband. Her breakout role was in the 1938 movie “Brother Rat,” where she met Mr. -

Seduction, betrayal, abandonment, extortion, murder, suicide, revenge, jealousy, incurable illness, obsession, and compulsion—these are part of the familiar terrain of melodrama. —Marcia Landry What draws us to melodrama as a narrative mode? Why do we seem to find the emotional trials and life-or-death calamities besetting longsuffering soap heroines, superheroes, and postapocalyptic zombie survivalists so endlessly enthralling? At what point does melodrama become camp? And conversely, what distinguishes “low” genres like melodrama from “high” genres like the novel? What do these convulsive narratives, which focus so obsessively on the Freudian hothouse of the bourgeois family, have to tell us about our private but also our collective social pleasures, perversions, and aspirations? What does it mean that readers and viewers return again and again to the site of crisis in search of narrative pleasure? This course explores the poetics and politics of melodrama -
