The results bear upon the discipline of social psychology and cultural studies, and reveal the importance of gender, power, and morality in viewers' interpretations of the programs. The findings for the two programs were very different in that femininity was seen to be conventional in Dallas, but matriarchal in Coronation Street, and morality and power were seen to play different roles in the two programs. The study was particularly concerned with three categories of people--academic psychologists, researchers in cultural studies, and the general public--who watch and variously interpret television programs. The differences between, and problems within, the disciplines of social psychology and cultural studies, insofar as they deal with the mass media, illustrate how television contributes to the social reality of the viewer. 'Cultural studiet examines the structure but not the interpretation of programmes. There is no theoretical integration between these enterprises. Two studies are reported which use multidimensional scaling to uncover,4iswers' spontaneous, largelyimplicitinterpretations of eharacters in Coronation Street and Dallas. The results bear upon both research -enterprises and reveal the importance of gender, power and morality in viewers' interpretations: Femininity in Dallas is . conventional, in Coronation Street it is matriarchal. Of all the people who enjoy, discuss, monitor, and for different reasons, watchand variouslyinterpret invarious ways television programmes, I am concerned with three categories of people. These three categories are the academicpsychologist, researchers in cultural studies, and the general public. The issue I wish tq address is that of how television contributes to the social reality of the virlwer. I shall approach this issue by discussing the differences between and problems within the disciplines of social psychology and cultural studies insofar as they deal with the mass. media, and suggest some potential areas of integration, both theoretical andempirical, for researchon the relation between television programmes and the viewers' social underotanding. A:ademic psychologists' "readings"of 'programmes are largely implicit, detectable only from close examination of the assumptions underlying their experiments on the effects ce television: Psychologists rarely spend time analysing or even describing the programmes or genres with whose effects they are concerned, partlybecause of their largely implicit behaviourist semantics. From references to 'incorrect comprehension', 'biased recall',. and 'developmental deficits', one can dete,it the assumption that programmes, indeed social stimuli in general, are so transparent,unambiguous, and unitary in meaning as to require no analysis. In other words, the transmission of a programme is held to lay bare a simple and obvious meaning such that viewers can be judged right or wrong in their interpretations. While the dual assumptions or a passive viewer and a transparent text have earned psychologists some scornfrom other disciplines, they haveals8 caused problems within psychological research, and have contributed to the general disillusion with the 'effects' enterprise (e.g. Roberts & Bachen, 1981). So, before. televisioncan have behavioral, attitudinal or cognitive effects,a progran must first be perceived and comprehended by viewers(Comstock, Chaffee, Katzman, McCombi, and Roberts, 1978, Reeves, Chaffee, and Tims, 1982). To the extent that viewers' representations of a program are a 'distortion, selection, or transformation of the original, the program's consequences will also be affected. However, the latter point, concerning textual semantics, still is largely ignored by psychologists. Those media researchers who recognise textual. complexity tend not tobe thoseconcerned with the psychology of the viewer or, with some exceptions, with the interface between the tl.v.). Yet for the study of 'televisions' effects on viewers, we need to be conceptually clear abopt exactly what we think may effectwhat, and with what causal power..' The second set of programme readers then are those in the area of cultural studies, semiotics of the media, etc. They apply the analytic tools gained

Lowry and Coronation Street: Salford Cultural Identities Susanne Schmid Abstract: Salford, “the classic slum”, according to Robert Roberts’s study, has had a distinct cultural identity of its own, which is centred on the communal ideal of work- ing-class solidarity, best exemplified in the geographical space of “our street”. In the wake of de-industrialisation, Roberts’s study, lyrics by Ewan MacColl, L.S. Lowry’s paintings, and the soap opera Coronation Street all nostalgically celebrate imagined northern working-class communities, imbued with solidarity and human warmth. Thereby they contribute to constructing both English and northern identities. Key names and concepts: Friedrich Engels - Robert Roberts - Ewan MacColl - L.S. The research objectives were as follows: •To explore the frequency of alcohol use on British soaps aired on non-satellite UK television •To investigate the positive and negative portrayal of alcohol •To explore the percentage of interactions that involve alcohol •To explore the percentage of each episode that involves alcohol •To assess how many characters drink over daily guidelines •To explore the relationship between alcohol and the characters who regularly/excessively consume alcohol •To look further into the link between the location of alcohol consumption and the consequences depicted •To identify and analyse the repercussions, if any, of excessive alcohol consumption shown •To explore the frequency of tea use on British soaps aired on non-satellite UK television •Six weeks of footage was collected for each programme from 26th July to 6th September 2010 and analysed for verbal and visual instances of alcohol and tea. •In total 21.5 hours was collected and analysed for Emmerdale, 15.5 hours for Coronation Street, 15.5 hours for Hollyoaks and 13 hours for Eastenders. © 2010 Kantar Media 3 INTRODUCTION cont. •A coding sheet was formulated in conjunction with Drinkaware before the footage was analysed which enabled us to track different types of beverages and their size (e.g.
