Between L.S. Lowry and Coronation Street: Salford Cultural Identities
Between L.S. Lowry and Coronation Street: Salford Cultural Identities Susanne Schmid Abstract: Salford, “the classic slum”, according to Robert Roberts’s study, has had a distinct cultural identity of its own, which is centred on the communal ideal of work- ing-class solidarity, best exemplified in the geographical space of “our street”. In the wake of de-industrialisation, Roberts’s study, lyrics by Ewan MacColl, L.S. Lowry’s paintings, and the soap opera Coronation Street all nostalgically celebrate imagined northern working-class communities, imbued with solidarity and human warmth. Thereby they contribute to constructing both English and northern identities. Key names and concepts: Friedrich Engels - Robert Roberts - Ewan MacColl - L.S. Lowry - Charles Dickens - Richard Hoggart - George Orwell; Slums - Escaper Fiction - Working-class Culture - Nostalgia - De-industrialisation - Rambling - Coronation Street. 1. Salford as an Imagined Northern Community For a long time, Salford, situated right next to the heart of Manchester, has been known as a place that underwent rapid and painful industri- alisation in the nineteenth century and an equally difficult and agonis- ing process of de-industrialisation in the twentieth. If Manchester, the former flag-ship of the cotton industry, has been renowned for its beautiful industrial architecture, its museums, and its economic suc- cess, Salford has been hailed as “the classic slum”, as in the title of Robert Roberts’s seminal study about Salford slum life in the first quarter of the twentieth century (Roberts 1990, first published in 1971). The equation of “Salford” and “slum”, however, dates back further than that. Friedrich Engels’s The Condition of the Working Class in England, written in 1844/45, casts a gloomy light on a city made up of dwellings hardly fit for humans: 348 Susanne Schmid If we cross the Irwell to Salford, we find on a peninsula formed by the river, a town of eighty thousand inhabitants […]. -

It comprises two modules, Educational Guidance and Career Development, which highlight and examine the core aspects of educational and career preparation through a number of tutorials which include course and career investigation, grant applications, skills identification, CV and application form preparation, interview advice and overall self-awareness. Each tutorial comprises an introductory text and presentation slides, while others have assignments and additional materials to support tutorial activities. Both modules offer practical exercises, which enable students to relate to and customise the learning to meet their own needs. Students also gain the opportunity to give oral presentations and submit assignments and reports, activities that are typical of most educational and career paths today. The toolkit guides and advises tutors throughout all aspects of the modules, while allowing for flexibility in each tutorial given the diverse needs of all groups. Through regular feedback and updating, the toolkit continues as an invaluable aid in supporting adult learning. This report can be downloaded at: http://www.ul.ie/careers/careers/mature/toolkit.shtml. Summary Toolkit Overview iii Onwards & Upwards Acknowledgements Thanks to the students on the Mature Student Access Certificate Course at the University of Limerick who provided feedback on the modules for this toolkit and who were such a joy to work with. -
1 I. Introduction Mineral Interests May Lay Dormant for Decades Before
BASIC ARKANSAS INTESTATE SUCCESSION, RIGHTS OF SURVIVING SPOUSES, AND RELATED CURATIVE TECHNIQUES FOR LAWYERS AND LANDMEN BY 1 J. MARK ROBINETTE JR. I. Introduction Mineral interests may lay dormant for decades before becoming productive. In the interim, however, the owners of these interests do not lay dormant. They live long lives, marry, have children, and eventually, they die. Some of these persons have well-laid estate plans, know the nature and extent of their property, and upon their departure to the hereafter, leave their affairs in meticulous order with no question of who is entitled to what and where. Others depart this life leaving little more than a treasure map and their descendants. Generations and many lines of persons descended from one severed mineral owner repeat the cycle of life—marriage, children, and death with or without consideration for what happens to their property upon their passing. Over many generations with such variations in the handling of final affairs among members of a family, the ownership of the original mineral owner’s interest today can resemble a bowl of spaghetti. When confronted with such fragmented and splintered ownership, a lawyer or landman can untangle a family history and determine the true owners of a severed interest by simply knowing the basics of intestate succession, the rights of surviving spouses, and how to cure title issues generated by by the former. These course materials are intended as a refresher course for lawyers and as a general guide for landmen. This course will begin with an overview of intestate succession in Arkansas. -

Want to Know What J.R. and Sue Ellen Ewing Talked About Behind the Scenes of “Dallas”? Win Lunch with TV Star Linda Gray and Help Find a Cure for Alzheimer’s Disease SAN FRANCISCO (March 24, 2016) – Want to have a lunch you’ll never forget? On the 36th anniversary of J.R. being shot on TV’s “Dallas,” TV star Linda Gray (Sue Ellen Ewing) is offering new Brain Health Registry members a chance to win “Lunch with Linda.” The #GrayMatters contest, part of the actress’s ongoing effort to increase awareness for Alzheimer’s disease, encourages people to register for clinical trials and help find cures faster. The “Lunch with Linda” contest includes roundtrip airfare for two, ground transportation, hotel and lunch. For a chance to win, register by May 15, 2016 at http://join.brainhealthregistry.org/lunchwithlinda. #GrayMatters is part of a national outreach effort led by Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation to grow a registry of potential Alzheimer’s clinical trial candidates and accelerate a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease by 2025. Encouraging enrollment for clinical trials has been a major barrier in bringing promising medical treatments to the market, and more research is needed. Together with UC San Francisco’s Brain Health Registry, the national effort also includes support from major medical institutions across the country, including UCSF, researchers at Harvard Medical School, Emory University Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, Neurostudies.net., and Brain Matters Research. Quote: “I lost my mother and a dear friend to Alzheimer’s disease and wanted to do something to help,” explained Linda Gray. -
