    Destination of the Month: Tangier, Morocco A mere eight miles across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain, Richard Allemanfinds an exotic new world in a legendary North African city that has everything from cool cafés and new boutique hotels to glorious beaches, a fascinating history, and the world’s most famous kasbah. The Best Beaches Boasting a stellar location on the Strait of Gibraltar, with the Mediterranean to the east and the Atlantic to the west, Tangier is one of the world’s great beach towns. The city itself sits on a sweeping expanse of sand that’s edged with beach clubs, cafés, and discos. The town beach, favored by local youths for swimming and soccer, and with its crowds and sometimes polluted water, is not recommended for tourists, but there are glorious alternatives. This season, the plage du jour isPlage de Sidi Kacem, about 20 kilometers west of town, beyond the Cap Spartel lighthouse and the Mirage resort. Here, in a garden by the sea, local restaurateurs Rémi Tulloue and Philippe Morin have created the chic French bistrot L’Océan ( 05.3933.8137), an idyllic spot for a long leisurely lunch. For the serious surf set, on the same beach Philippe and Rémi have recently opened Club de Plage,with chaise longues and thatched umbrellas right on the sand. For the ultimate beach experience, however, drive down to Asilah, an enchanting little coastal town about an hour south of Tangier, where a few kilometers away, a rough, sandy road leads to Paradise Beach—a cliff-backed beauty, reminiscent of the Greek islands, with shack cafés that rent umbrellas and chaises and serve fresh grilled fish and simple tagines (stews) made with chicken and bright local veggies.

    PARA ALÉM DO PÃO NU. DO CONTO “A SANDÁLIA DO PROFETA MAOMÉ”, DE MOHAMED CHOUKRI Felipe Benjamin Francisco RESUMO: Este artigo propõe uma tradução à língua portuguesa do conto Na‘l annabiyy, “A sandália do Profeta Maomé”, de Mohamed Choukri. Trata-se da primeira tradução ao português de um trabalho do escritor marroquino feita diretamente do árabe. Pretende-se, assim, reaproximar o leitor brasileiro a um ilustre nome do panorama literário do Marrocos, revelando-lhe seu lado contista. O texto estrutura-se em três partes: i) apresentação do perfil de Choukri e seu estilo; ii) discussão geral sobre as decisões tradutórias adotadas; e iii) tradução do conto acompanhada de seu original árabe. ABSTRACT: This article proposes a translation into the Portuguese language of the short story Na‘l annabiyy (The Prophet’s Sandal), by Mohamed Choukri. This is the first direct translation from Arabic into Portuguese of one of his works. Thus, it intends to reconnect the Brazilian reader to an illustrious name of the Moroccan literary panorama, bringing to light his short story writer side. The text is divided into three parts: i) a presentation of Choukri's profile and literary style; ii) a general discussion about the translation decisions adopted; and iii) the translation of the work accompanied by its original Arabic edition. Šukrī Abstract The history of books that were rejected, condemned, banned or censored in various parts of the world for political, social, religious or sexual reasons is very long. Whereas, however, people in the West have learned to value controversial literature despite its contentious or provocative na- ture, the societies in the Middle East still have problems with accepting certain sorts of literary works. There are many publications in the Arab World that sum up to a category I call unwanted literature because the conservative society in which they were produced doesn’t want to accept them as their own heritage. One of the most recent and striking examples of such divergence of opinion between the Western and Eastern readers are the works of the Moroccan author Mo- hamed Choukri and especially his autobiography al-Ëubz al-ÍÁfÐ published in 1973 in English translation by Paul Bowles as For Bread Alone long before the Arabic version could appear.     4DAYS/3NIGHTS OBTFDD06 DAY 1: MARRAKECH -LA FIBULE DU DRÂA, ZAGORA - AMEZROU - ASRIR IGNAOUN - TILLOUGUI: Departing from your hotel in Marrakech at 06:45 at the latest, we set off south in our air-conditioned Land Cruiser 4x4 over the Glaoua Plain to cross the High Atlas Mountains via the fabulous Tizi n’Tichka Pass (7412ft) – so hold on to your hats - to continue down alongside the Oued Ouarzazate to the ex- French Foreign Legion town of Ouarzazate and on down the surprising Valley of the Oued Drâa until you arrive at the small, charming kasbah-like Hotel La Fibule Du Drâa in the oasis village of Zagora, where you will have your midday lunch of tagine. Time to relax around the swimming pool before setting off with our cameleer at 3pm (September to May) or 4:30pm (June, July & August) on our ships of the desert for some 2½ hours towards the south-west through the oases and kasbahs at Amezrou and Sart and the Jewish Cemetery in Asrir Ignaoûn, to cross the Oued Drâa leading onto the Fajia Plain. As the air has heated up and the winds have risen to make the sand swirl about us, you’ll notice that older dunes appear darker, for the iron in the sand has finally oxidised. We sway on across the Reg until we reach our established nomads’ black-tented bivouac site at Tillougui nestling amidst some small dunes in a private oasis. Whilst we settle in to enjoy an awesome sunset (rare cloud cover permitting), our traditional welcoming mint tea is taken; our dinner for the evening is prepared to be enjoyed under the immeasurable canopy of the starlit heavens.

Our approach was, firstly, to seize the regional marketing effort of Tangier in its temporal dynamics (Past-present-future) and, secondly, to decline this marketing: marketing to residents, tourism marketing and marketing to investors. The main results of our research show that marketing as designed and conducted in Tangier is insufficient and unsatisfactory. Such shortcomings have led us to formulate recipes that can improve the image, attractiveness and competitiveness of the city.
