TheMARCH 12, 2017Steward I SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Christ Jesus . . . destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. -- 2 Timothy 1:10b

Lord, It Is Good That We Are Here Geoff Pautsch, Director of Finance

This Sunday, our Gospel reading recounts the Transfiguration of Jesus. St. Thomas Aquinas considered this miracle to be the greatest of miracles because it happened to Jesus himself. It is very appropriate that the Church provides us this reading during the season of Lent. The Transfiguration of Jesus gave the disciples a foretaste of what the glory of heaven will be. The Transfiguration of Jesus, like the Baptism of the Lord, are pivotal events in our Catholic faith where human nature meets the divine, a bridge between heaven and earth. During our time in Lent, we put additional focus on transforming our lives. In our case, however, it is our inward self that needs transforming rather than our outward self. God asks us to seek conversion of our mind and heart. God is calling us to share what he has given us However, we must be open to conversion for it with others. to occur. God has blessed our parish with many gifts. In Stewardship is closely associated with this just three weeks, our parish will begin celebrating conversion. March 12, 2017 parish.stbenedict.com page 3 Head and Heart Discipleship For the past year, this page has focused on all the ways that we grow closer to Jesus on our journey of faith. As we, at St. Benedict, have had a more intentional and specific focus on growing as disciples of Jesus, our Catechetical Commission and Spiritual Life Commission articulated that sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of what we learn (Head) and sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of our prayer, retreat experience, mission or some encounter (Heart). So not only will we hightlight the ways that we learn (Head) about Jesus in our Catechetical Conversations, we will also hightlight the ways we experience Jesus (Heart). 1 Spiritual Life Gatherings 2 Catechetical Please mark your calendars now and join your Conversations friends and community in what will be beautiful Beginning at 7PM in the Church faith-filled gatherings. Seder Meal Wednesday, April 12th Christians share with Jews a story and experience: once we were bound in slavery, but the Lord, with an out stretched arm brought us to freedom, to covenant, to a Promised Land. That is one of the best reasons why many Christians choose to celebrate the Passover Meal, the Seder, each year. Through St. Jo s ep h the centuries, the ritual of this night has allowed each gener- ation to make that story its own. Here at St Benedict for over 30 years we have made it our own. Plan to join us on this Ta b l e special night of prayer and praise. Bring a dish to pass and share as it’s potluck on Wednesday April 12th at 6:30pm at Beaven Hall. All are welcome. Questions? Catholic-Lutheran Myth Busters Saturday, April 1, 9:30AM – Noon Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1218 W. Addison Do Catholics worship the Virgin Mary and the saints? Do Lutherans think of the Eucharist as “just” bread and wine? Do Catholics not value the Bible as much as Protestants? Do Lutherans think they emphasize grace while Catholics talk about works? These are a few examples of misconceptions Lutherans and Catholics have had of one another in the past. In this year of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we invite you to come and learn about some of the differences and commonalities among Lutherans and Roman Catholics, especially in the years since Vatican II. Whether you are in a Lutheran-Catholic marriage, the child of a Lutheran and Catholic, whether you are committed to ecumenism or simply curious, join us for a lively inquiry. To register or for more information, email [email protected].

Retrouvaille The word Retrouvaille(re-tro-vi with a long i.) is a French word meaning rediscovery. This program helps couples heal and renew their marriages and offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. Do you feel lost, alone or bored in your marriage? Are you frustrated, hurt or angry with your spouse? Are you constantly fighting? Have you thought about separation or divorce? Does talking about it only make it worse? Thousands of couples headed for cold, unloving relationships have successfully overcome their marriage problems by attending the program. Some couples come during the initial signs of a marriage problem and others are in a state of despair. The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend experience combined with a series of 6 post-weekend sessions. The tools learned here will help put your marriage in order again. The main emphasis of the program is on communication between husband and wife and will give you the opportunity to rediscover each other as well as examine your lives together in a new, positive way. Upcoming Retrouvaille Dates: April 28, June 9, August 25, October 20, December 1 Contact: Robin & Phil Kain, (773) 544-0498, [email protected] Phil and Robin Kain reside in the Roscoe Village neighborhood of Chicago. They have 3 children and attend St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. They are passionate about the Retrouvaille ministry and presenting weekends in the United States.
