Notre Dame is the first Catholic school in the state and one of the first in the country to offer such a program. At the end of their course of study, the students in this program will receive a certificate of completion, signifying their accomplishments at Notre Dame. Graduation Requirements Students must earn a minimum of 24.00 credits and successfully meet the following requirements: REQUIRED DISCIPLINE CREDITS SERVICE REQUIREMENTS Religion 4 2 Freshmen & Sophomores are to complete 25 English 4 service hours by serving Notre Dame, their parish, Mathematics 3 and/or local community. Lab Sciences, including 3 2 Biology 2 Juniors are to complete a total of 25 hours. Fifteen 2 Either Chemistry or Physics of these hours must be earned by volunteering with an organization that deals with the issues of social justice. Foreign Language – Same Language 2 The idea is that students, in line with the junior religion Social Studies, including 3 curriculum, will develop a deeper understanding of 2 Western Civilization service and social justice by developing a relationship 2 United States History with the people and organization they are serving. Students must pass these exams by the end of Jr. Year: 2 United States Constitution Exam 2 English Composition Proficiency Exam Grade Point Average A student’s GPA is determined by multiplying the credit earned by the quality points for that course. Semester-long courses, for example, are worth 0.5 credits. The 0.5 credits are then multiplied by the quality points for the letter grade that was earned. These quality points are then totaled and divided by the credits attempted. Grades in Driver’s Education are NOT included in the GPA. Summer School grades and credits are added to a student’s academic record at the conclusion of summer school. The GPA of a transfer student is based only on grades earned at Notre Dame College Prep. Honor Roll The Honor Roll is determined on the basis of the semester GPA. There are three classifications: SUMMA CUM LAUDE: GPA of 3.80 or higher MAGNA CUM LAUDE: GPA of 3.50 through 3.79 CUM LAUDE: GPA of 3.20 through 3.49 Any grade lower than a “C-“ disqualifies a student from honor roll status. Theodore Hesburgh, CSC, the Hesburgh Scholar Program challenges students to use their talents to aid in the construction of a world where justice, peace and love prevail. Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, CSC: Renowned Leader A priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, CSC, is considered one of the nation’s truly great leaders. Committed to nurturing spiritual values, Fr. Hesburgh has substantially shaped and articulated America’s conscience on numerous social issues. Fr. Hesburgh served as President of the University of Notre Dame for 35 years (1952-1987), but his work was not limited to the University. His remarkable achievements in the public sector include service on 16 Presidential Commissions in the areas of civil rights, peaceful uses of atomic energy, and Third World development. Jenkins, C.S.C., Notre Dame’s president. “With his leadership, charisma and vision, he turned a relatively small Catholic college known for football into one of the nation’s great institutions for higher learning. “In his historic service to the nation, the Church and the world, he was a steadfast champion for human rights, the cause of peace and care for the poor. “Perhaps his greatest influence, though, was on the lives of generations of Notre Dame students, whom he taught, counseled and befriended. “Although saddened by his loss, I cherish the memory of a mentor, friend and brother in Holy Cross and am consoled that he is now at peace with the God he served so well.” In accord with Father Hesburgh’s wishes, a customary Holy Cross funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame in coming days for his family, Holy Cross religious, University Trustees, administrators, and select advisory council members, faculty, staff and students.
