Kevin Burke The caps, gowns, and hoods that you see the faculty wearing today evolved from medieval ecclesiastical garb. Modern academic regalia in the United Patrick E. Cummings '73 States is based on an intercollegiate code established in 1895. Most academic gowns are black, but some universities allow the use of their college colors. Br. Chester Freel, CSC The gowns differ based upon the level of the degree they represent. The sleeves of the bachelor's gown are square at the end instead of pointed. The Fr. Christopher Gustafson master's gown sleeves are oblong and the base of the sleeve hangs down. Doctoral gowns are typically black and have bell sleeves with three velvet William S. Harrington '68 bands on them and velvet facing on the front of the gown. The hood which drapes over the back of the gown dates to the 12th century when it was in- Joseph A. Petricca '68 tended as a head covering and shoulder cape. The length and width of the hood denote the wearer’s highest academic achievement.
