Case Studies in Transethnic Communication by Exchange of Terminology for Elementary Spiritual Concepts of Ethic Groups By Fee-Alexandra Haase• Abstract Methodology and Objects: Methodologically, from a diachronic linguistics perspective regarding the concept of the shin, spirits in folk belief in China and neighbouring cultures, we compare texts that comprise meanings a) historically in the local language and b) compared to the meanings of equivalent terms in languages of other cultures. Comparing sources of this belief, we examine if and how the shin belief can serve as an example of communication across cultural borders including practical forms of worshipping. Argumentation: We argue that the concept of the shin is across cultural and national borders a result from folk culture transcending political or cultural borders transmitted via migration of ethnic groups. • Dr. Fee-Alexandra Haase, Assoc. The Weretiger is type of Jinn that existence pre-dates human and its‟ relationship with human have been establish prior to Islam. The Islamisation of the Malay Archipelago see‟s that a syncretisation of old tradition into Islam and thus the practice of Weretiger still exists until todays. The scholar (ulama) are still debating in the Islamic Law perspective not just the ties between Weretiger and human but Jinn and human as whole using references from Al-Qur‟an, Hadith and previous scholarly works. Keyword:Weretiger - Jinn - Scholar 1. Introduction TheWeretiger discipline is a type of knowledge that is taught and practice in the Malay Archipelago (Alam Melayu)1 prior to the coming of Islam. The purpose of this knowledge is to protect the practitioner, his family and wealth from any threat whether it is physically or spiritually. The practitioner of this knowledge is bound by several conditions and agreement with the Weretiger and this knowledge are still in practice generation by generation even after the Islamisation of the Malay Archipelago. -

KHUTBA Friday 06.01.12 English Story of Prophet Solomon (pbuh) Part 2 of 2 All thanks are due to Allah, the Most-Generous. I bear witness that there is nothing worthy of worship except him. He has no partners. May Allah send peace and blessings upon his final messenger. And then, Servants of Allah, today we will talk about Prophet Solomon (PBUH) story with the Hoopoe. He set out to find the hoopoe bird, which could detect water under the ground. He sent signals all over the hoopoe to call on him, but it was nowhere to be found. In anger, he declared that unless the bird had a good reason for its absence, he would punish it severely. The hoopoe eventually came to Solomon and explained the reason for its delay. "I have discovered something of which you are not aware. I have come from Sheba (Sab'a) with important news." Solomon became curious, and his anger subsided. The bird continued: Sab'a is ruled by a queen named Bilkis (Bilqis), who has plenty of everything, including a splendid throne. But in spite of all this wealth, Satan has entered her heart and the hearts of her people. She rules their minds completely. I was shocked to learn that they worship the sun instead of Allah the Almighty." To check the hoopoe's information, Solomon sent a letter to the queen with the bird. He instructed the bird to remain hidden and to watch everything. The Queen of Sheba Sends Gifts The hoopoe dropped the letter in front of the queen and flew away to hide. -

Certitude The First Step of Enlightenment al-Shaikh ‘Abd al-Karim al-Rifa’i An Abu’ Abd-Allah Translation Authors Introduction All praise is due to God who made belief in the correct creed obligatory upon His creation, requesting that they hold firm to unequivocal proofs. He says, “Say: ‘this is my way, I call to God with sure knowledge, I and whoever follows me” (12:107) And may peace and blessing be upon His prophet, the one who guides unto the clear path, clarifying the axioms of felicity and success. And likewise upon his family and his companions who closely followed in his footsteps, summoning humanity unto his guidance whilst clarifying matters in the most excellent manners. Due to the fact that an introductory text in Theology is in dire need of an abridged, albeit brief, tract in Islamic Creed which contains both rational proofs and Qur’anic verses, I was compelled to hastily prepare such a work in the hope that God will accept it and make it for His sake alone. Surely He is near, oft answering! 2 The Ten Principles Verily the principles of each science are ten, Definition, subject matter, benefits gained and then, It’s merit, its subject reference and originator, The name, source of authority, the ruling of the Lawgiver, It’s topic. However some of the ten are deemed sufficient, And whoever grasps them all is most proficient. 1. The Definition Linguistically the word tawhid ‘means to know that something is one’. Whilst in Theology it means ‘to devote oneself to God through worship, with absolute conviction that His Divine Essence, Attribute and Actions are One.’ When synonymous with the science of Theology it is defined as ‘a science that enables a person to affirm religious creed on the basis of absolute proofs.’ 2. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract This essay surveys the images of angels in the Iranian paintings particularly in 18 th (under Safavid dynasty) and 19 th (under Qajar dynasty) centuries in Iran. As a background, the concept of Angel has been briefly studied in four categories of Persian mythology, Iranian epic, Islamic culture and folk stories. The images of angels altered in different periods which were directly related to cultural interaction between "East" and "West". The angels in Safavid period were ideal images in a utopian atmosphere and their pictorial appearances were representations of philosophical and metaphorical concepts. Illustrating the angels for the Safavid artists was actually a way to penetrate into the concepts world. It is essential to mention that the challenge of "East" and "West" which had begun in Safavid period, reached to its critical summit in Qajar era. It was due to various reasons; Travelling abroad, getting acquaintance with modern ideas, constitutionalism movement, entering new technology such as photography and printing industry were some of the most influential causes which affected all aspects of Qajar society. Idealistic vision of Safavid painters changed into naturalistic one and the imaginary illustrations of angels altered to more realistic images. Many progressive newspapers began to be published in which the angels were represented as the symbols of freedom, homeland and constitutionalism. -

The core of original stories came out of Persia and India in the early eighth century. They were translated into Arabic and given the name Alfu Laylah wa laylah or The Thousand Nights and One Night. This set of stories was few in number and fell far short of living up to the number in its title. The Arabian Nights stand near the top of the list of literary works that have influenced western literature. The first stories from the Nights to reach Europe did so around the 12th century. Chaucer's Horse, for example, is evidently The Enchanted Horse from the Arabian Nights. The real influence began, however, Galland's translation brought the full set of the tales to Europe in the early 1700's. The application of narrative structure to alfu lailah wa can be conducted by focusing on the study of the plot which makes up series of events. The analysis is made on the experiences undergone by King Syahriar and his wife, Syahrazad from the beginning to the end of the story. The result of the analysis shows that generally the narrative structure of the story can be divided into three parts, namely prologue, body, and epilogue. -

The recording in this week goes through those, and it is also important you listen to your own heart in what they mean to you. If a lot of Major Arcana appear, pay attention to two main points: 1. The person you are reading for may be going through some big life changes. 2. The more that appear the less free will and choice that person may have (but of course there is ALWAYS free will and choice). PROGRAM NOTES Aleksandra Vrebalov (b. 1970) Pannonia Boundless (1998) Pannonia Boundless was commissioned by Kronos Quartet in 1997. Always open to new experience and eager to explore a new artistic territory, Kronos asked me to do six minutes of virtuosic music that would be based on Gypsy tunes and would employ a specific playing technique of these nomadic musicians. After the research in Novi Sad radio archives and many visits to Gypsy taverns in Vojvodina, I wrote this piece as an homage to those musicians who from the margins of the society, as much as from the well know concert halls, have the power to touch our hearts. Pannonia Boundless was released in 2000 on Kronos Caravan by Nonesuch, on Hello Kronos by Nonesuch, on Pannonia Boundless by TAJJ/SKCNS, and published by Boosey & Hawkes in 2007. It was used in a movie Soupirs d’ame, by a Canadian director Helen Doyle, and in a ballet, The Little Prince, by choreographer Dusan Tynek. February 14, 2013 note: I wrote Pannonia Boundless in my grandmother’s house in Sombor, the same house in which I had stayed during the NATO air-raids in 1999. A neighbor had died as collateral damage. Today I learned that the piece was played by the best band in the world, the US Marine Band, at their chamber music concert in Washington, D.C.
