Jerome S. Fanciulli Collection History of Aviation Collection Provenance Jerome S. Fanciulli was born in New York City, January 12, 1988. He was the son of Professor Francesco and Amanda Fanciulli. He was educated at de Witt Clinton High School in New York City. He attended St. Louis University, St. Louis, 1903-04 and Stevens Institute, Hoboken, N.J., 1904-05. He married Marian Callaghan in November, 1909. On January 12, 1986 he died in Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Virginia. Mr. Fanciulli worked for the Washington Post and then joined the Associated Press where his assignments were on the Capitol staff of the Associated Press. He became the AP’s aviation specialist. Mr. Fanciulli was a charter member of the National Press Club and a founding member of the Aero Club of Washington, D.C. In November 19098, Mr. Fanciulli joined Glenn H. Curtiss’ company. He was Vice President and General Manger of the Curtiss Exhibition Company. Among his many varied duties Mr. Fanciulli established schools of aviation and directed the demonstration and sale of Curtiss aeroplanes in the United States and Europe. He promoted or conducted some of the largest air meets in the United States prior to 1913. He collaborated with the United States Army and the United States Navy in developing aeroplane specifications. Mr. Fanciulli wrote magazine articles, employed and directed aviators obtaining contracts for them. Mr. Fanciulli sold the United States Navy its first biplane and the United States Army its second biplane. He also sold czarist Russia its first plane for their Navy. Hate Crimes in 2001
Foreword In response to Congress’ passage of the Hate Crime Statistics Act of 1990 and subsequent acts that amended the directive, the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program collects and publishes data on crimes motivated by racial, religious, ethnicity/national-origin, sexual-orientation, and disability bias. In 2001, 9,730 bias-motivated incidents were voluntarily reported by law enforcement agencies nationwide. From the fi rst year that national hate crime data were published in 1992 until 2000, incidents motivated by racial bias comprised the largest portion of reported hate crime incidents followed by incidents motivated by a religious bias and those motivated by bias against sexual orientation. The fewest number of hate crime incidents resulted from ethnicity or national-origin bias, until the addition of the disability bias in 1997, which then became the lowest portion of reported hate crime incidents. That distribution changed in 2001, presumably as a result of the heinous incidents that occurred on September 11. For many offenders, the preformed negative opinion, or bias, was directed toward ethnicity/ national origin. Consistent with past data, by bias type, law enforcement reported that most incidents in 2001 were motivated by bias against race. However, crime incidents motivated by bias against ethnicity/national origin were the second most frequently reported bias in 2001, more than doubling the number of incidents, offenses, victims, and known offenders from 2000 data. Additionally, the anti-other ethnicity/national origin category quadrupled in incidents, offenses, victims, and known offenders. Another noticeable increase in 2001 was among religious-bias incidents. Anti-Islamic religion incidents were previously the second least reported, but in 2001, they became the second highest reported among religious-bias incidents (anti-Jewish religion incidents were the highest), growing by more than 1,600 percent over the 2000 volume. -

The first church formed in the county was the Baptist Church of New Bedford, organized February 20, 1796, by settlers in what is now the Town of Tioga. It had but nine members. As early as November 10, 1819, there was an agricultural society in the county. Tioga County, according to the official postal guide for July, 1930, has the following post offices: Apalachin, Barton, Berkshire, Candor, Catatonk, Halsey Valley, Lockwood, Lounsberry, New ark Valley, Nichols, North Spencer, Owego, Richford, Smithboro, South Apalachin, Spencer, Straits Corners, Tioga Center, Waits, Waverly, Willseyville. OWEGO. Owego, known as the southern gateway to the lake country, is a village of 4,739 inhabitants finely situated on the Susque hanna, near the mouth of Owego Creek. In 1922 the state com pleted the final link of the New York-Finger Lakes-Buffalo cross state motor route, thus placing Owego on a route fifty miles shorter than the old New York-Albany-Buffalo highway. At Owego the traveler leaves the Liberty highway and follows the new road to Ithaca. From time immemorial the Susquehanna River at Owego and the Finger Lakes at Ithaca have been connected first by an Indian trail, next by a pioneer roadway cut in 1789, and then the turnpike built from 1808 to 1811. During the War of 1812 this highway was of great value as a means of bringing supplies to the Atlantic seaboard, the Susquehanna River at that time being an important artery of commerce. -

But they brought to the task the requisites most needed: a free brain, a clear insight and fresh enthusiasm. Perhaps yours is the mind that will see the way to some great improve ment in aircraft, one of the most potent weapons for winning the war. A billion dollars has been set aside for production. The finest shops and the best trained men in the country are working upon design and manufacture and we will soon have machines. But we want the best in the world. The men engaged in the details of the work are just now under a pressure which is not favorable for the exercise of creative powers. Technical men who are far enough from the work to see it in a different perspective, therefore, have a special opportunity for useful service. -

Wilbur & OrvilleWright Pictorial Materials Preface This guide is the fifth commemorative tribute to the Wright brothers prepared by the Library of Congress since 1949, when the Wright papers were given to the Library by the Orville Wright estate, and is one of two publications originating in con nection with the seventy-fifth anniversary of powered flight. Its companion, entitled Photographs by the Wright Brothers: Prints from the Glass Negatives in the Library of Congress (Washing ton: Library of Congress, 1978), includes all hut two of 303 pho tographic glass-plate negatives taken by the Wright brothers in highly reduced form as positive images on five microfiche. The publication was prepared for the press by Leonard C. Bruno. Twenty-five years earlier, to celebrate the fiftieth anni versary of powered flight, a two-volume edition of The Papers of Wilbur and Orville Wright, Including the Chanute- Wright Let ters and Other Papers of Octave Chanute (New York: McGraw McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1953) was published under the sponsorship of Oberlin College. In that major initial tribute, the Wrights’ letters, diaries, notebooks, and other records of their scientific and technical work in inventing and perfecting the air plane were edited by Marvin W. McFarland of what was then the Library’s Aeronautics Division. As a contributor to that work, the present writer com piled several auxiliary files to supplement and help in organizing the wealth of material in the Wright papers. Two of these, later expanded, updated, and published to mark other anniversaries, were Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Bibliography Commemorating the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Wilbur Wright, April 16, 1867 (Washington: Library of Congress, 1968) and Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Chronology Commemorating the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Orville Wright, August 19, 1871 (Washington: Library of Congress, 1975). -
