Jazz Collection: Donald Fagen – Songs in Perfektion Dienstag, 09. Januar, 2018, 20.00 – 21.00 Uhr Samstag, 13. Januar, 2018, 17.06 – 18.30 Uhr (mit Bonustracks) Seit vierzig Jahren schreibt Donald Fagen Songs, und immer haben sie einen speziellen Sound. Aus Blues, Jazz und Funk schuf er zusammen mit seinem Alter Ego Walter Becker perfekt produzierte Songs für ihre Band «Steely Dan». Angefangen hatte Donald Fagen als Auftrags-Songschreiber. Erst mit seiner Band «Steely Dan» konnte er seinen Perfektionismus ausleben, und produzierte zusammen mit Walter Becker Songs nahe beim Jazz und doch mitten in der Popmusik. Den beiden gelang ein seltener Spagat zwischen Intellekt und Groove, und ihre Songtexte sind oft «ironische oder sarkastische Kommentare zur Zeit» (Poplexikon). Der Autor Christian Platz und der Musiker Hans Feigenwinter analysieren zusammen mit Annina Salis die Songs von Donald Fagen. Iron Curtains and Satin Sheets: "Strange Loves" in Cold War Popular Music Russell Reising Cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation" Many Americans know of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a tiny, grandmotherly woman with a heavy Germanic accent who, throughout the 1980s, dispensed love and sex advice to American television and radio audiences, often in shockingly, or at least titillatingly, graphic physical detail and frank language. A different doctor, one who also spoke in Germanically accented English, however, was in residence as the popular culture love and sex guru during the height of the Cold War. Stanley Kubrick's fictional Dr. Strangelove, the ex-Nazi defense theorist who stifled "Heil Hitler" salutes as he planned post-World War III orgies, lingers as a haunting reminder of the toll wreaked on human love and intimacy by the emotional terrors of the Cold War and its threat of instant nuclear obliteration. Even the resourceful Dr. Ruth would have a hard time offering advice to the Chiffons asking "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," when nuclear attack rendered the inevitability of "tomorrow" problematic, or to Tommy James and the Shondells's lovers who pant to each other "I Think We're Alone Now," if a nuclear war Copyright © 2003 by Russell Reising and Cultural Logic, ISSN 1097-3087 Reising 2 left them genuinely alone, the only two surviving human beings on earth. Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Keith played on each track of Steely Dan's subsequent recording, "Everything Must Go", and toured with Steely Dan in support of that record. Also Keith recently toured with Donald Fagen in support of 'Morph the Cat". Keith also spent two years touring with Sting on his Sacred Love Tour and has recently recorded with artists ranging from Faith Hill to Diana Ross. www.keithcarlock.com Jon Herington (guitar) SD's New Guitar Guy" — arguably one of the most coveted slots in the annals of popular music. Guitar Player Magazine called Jon a player with "one formidable voice" and "chops of doom". His debut album on Pioneer's Glass House records, "The Complete Rhyming Dictionary" was released in 1992. A second CD, "Like So", was released in 2000, and his collaboration with SD bandmate Michael Leonhart - "Slow" — was released in 2002.
