The Canadian pop-rock group signed with Reprise in 1992 and cultivated a loyal following who appreciated their free wheeling concerts and memorable songwriting. Stop Us If You Heard This Before! draws deeply from those formative years with an early, live version of “Same Thing,” a live cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Shake Your Rump,” the demo for longtime favorite “Old Apartment,” and the previously unreleased live track “Teenage Wasteland.” Also included from that era is the rare Pull’s Break Remix version of “One Week,” the smash that helped propel the Barenaked Ladies to international stardom in 1998. Stop Us If You Heard This Before! also unearths several unreleased tracks recorded during sessions for Everything To Everyone (2003), including “Long While” and “I Don’t Get It Anymore,” along with the demo for the album track “Second Best.” Also included from those sessions are versions of “Half A Heart” and “Adrift” – two songs the band later re-recorded for Barenaked Ladies Are Me (2006). The collection offers two remaining gems: an early version of “I Can, I Will, I Do” recorded in 2001 during sessions for Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits; and “Yes, Yes, Yes,” a song previously available only as a UK b-side or as a bonus track from the deluxe version of Everything To Everyone. ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Toronto, Canada Barenaked Ladies are no ordinary rock band. Founded as a duo in 1988 by schoolmates Ed Robertson and Steven Page, the group soon grew to five members and took Canada by storm with their five-song indie cassette, The Yellow Tape. Over the next decade-plus, their albums Gordon, Rock Spectacle, Stunt and Maroon went multi-platinum in the U.S., and Barenaked Ladies became a top-selling, award-winning concert draw across North America and The U.K. with their frenetic blend of high-energy melodic-pop, crack musicianship and spontaneous repartee. MARKETING POINTS Awards: Barenaked Ladies have racked up eight Juno Awards and multiple Grammy nominations, sold more than 14 million albums worldwide, written a plethora of hit singles (including "One Week," "Pinch Me" and "If I Had $1000000") and amassed an international fanbase whose members number in the millions. They recently performed at both the Glastonbury Festival & Hard Rock Calling in the UK. Info: Weeks after the release of Stop Us If You Heard This Before! Barenaked Ladies will launch its “Last Summer On Earth” tour, which features fellow performers Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, and Cracker. The 31 date tour kicks off on July 6 in Toledo, Ohio and ends with a date in Bangor, Maine on August 19. Tickets for shows in select markets are on sale now with others going on sale in the coming weeks through Ticketmaster.com and Livenation.com. • Brian Wilson's Spacious Estate in West Suburban St
May 24, 1998---- The backyard of Brian Wilson's spacious estate in west suburban St. Charles overlooks a calm pond. A playground set stands near the water. Wilson slowly walks out of the basement studio in the home he shares with wife Melinda and daughters Daria, 2, and Delanie, 6 months old. Wilson squints into the midday sun. He looks at a playground slide. Then he looks at a swing set. Wilson elects to sit down on the saddle swing. In a life of storied ups and downs, Wilson's career is on the upswing. The June release of ``Imagination'' (Giant Records) is a return to 1966's ``Pet Sounds'' in terms of orchestration and instrumentation, with its the ambitious patterns of tympanies and snare drums. But equally important are Wilson's vocals, which are the smoothest and most soulful since 1970's ``Sunflower.'' Wilson, 55, has suddenly defied age. Mick Jagger and Pete Townshend are brittle rock 'n' roll barnacles. Ray Davies and Paul McCartney have matured gracefully. Yet here's Wilson singing with effervescent hope on ``Dream Angel,'' which he co-wrote with his co-producer Joe Thomas and Jim Peterik of Survivor and Ides of March fame. The song was inspired by Wilson's new daughters. They make him happy. He says that is why he is writing happy music. On ``Dream Angel,'' Wilson even returned to the tight, late '50s harmonies of the Dell Vikings (``Come Go With Me'') and the Four Freshmen - happy-go-lucky voices that influenced the Beach Boys when they were young.

  • The Globalization of K-Pop: the Interplay of External and Internal Forces
THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

ENGLISH ATTRITION IN KOREAN-ENGLISH BILINGUAL CHILDREN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN LINGUISTICS AUGUST 2011 By Sang-Gu Kang Dissertation Committee: William O’Grady, Chairperson Kamil Ud Deen Luca Onnis Bonnie D. Schwartz Kimi Kondo-Brown © 2011, Sang-Gu Kang I ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It would have been impossible to complete this dissertation without the help of a great many people and organizations. I owe so much to my chair, William O’Grady, who trained me to become a linguist and encouraged me to always aim high. His generous support and expertise help fueled everything from experiment designs to data analysis and writing. I will always remember his challenging, but warm-hearted guidance. I would like to extend my deepest and sincere appreciation to my committee members. This work owes a lot to their support and valuable comments. I was able to expand my background knowledge of language acquisition and experiment procedures when I was taking Kamil Ud Deen’s classes in the first couple of years in the program. Also, his kind support was always encouraging. I also thank Luca Onnis for his expertise in bilingualism. It was when I was taking his class that I was able to encounter a lot of literature and start thinking about how I should introduce my work. Then, the enthusiasm of Bonnie D. Schwartz inside and outside the classroom always inspired me. Her relentless work ethic and analytic skills were admirable.
