  • Jazz Collection: Donald Fagen – Songs in Perfektion
Jazz Collection: Donald Fagen – Songs in Perfektion Dienstag, 09. Januar, 2018, 20.00 – 21.00 Uhr Samstag, 13. Iron Curtains and Satin Sheets: "Strange Loves" in Cold War Popular Music Russell Reising Cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation" Many Americans know of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a tiny, grandmotherly woman with a heavy Germanic accent who, throughout the 1980s, dispensed love and sex advice to American television and radio audiences, often in shockingly, or at least titillatingly, graphic physical detail and frank language. A different doctor, one who also spoke in Germanically accented English, however, was in residence as the popular culture love and sex guru during the height of the Cold War. Stanley Kubrick's fictional Dr. Strangelove, the ex-Nazi defense theorist who stifled "Heil Hitler" salutes as he planned post-World War III orgies, lingers as a haunting reminder of the toll wreaked on human love and intimacy by the emotional terrors of the Cold War and its threat of instant nuclear obliteration. Even the resourceful Dr. Ruth would have a hard time offering advice to the Chiffons asking "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," when nuclear attack rendered the inevitability of "tomorrow" problematic, or to Tommy James and the Shondells's lovers who pant to each other "I Think We're Alone Now," if a nuclear war Copyright © 2003 by Russell Reising and Cultural Logic, ISSN 1097-3087 Reising 2 left them genuinely alone, the only two surviving human beings on earth. In some respects, rock and roll is the ultimate Cold War art form, the vehicle for the cathartic wails of a generation which was told to conform and aspire to a middle-class existence, but which knew all the while that the entire world could be incinerated in thirty minutes.

TOOTS THIELEMANS NEA Jazz Master (2009) Interviewee: Toots Thielemans (April 29, 1922 – August 22, 2016) Interviewer: Anthony Brown with recording engineer Ken Kimery Date: August 31 and September 1, 2011 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, 80 pp. Brown: Today is August 31, 2011. My name is Anthony Brown, and I am conducting the Smithsonian Institution Oral History with NEA Jazz Master, harmonica virtuoso, guitarist and whistler, Toots Thielemans. Hello… Thielemans: Yes, my real name is Jean. Brown: Jean. Thielemans: And in Belgium… I was born in Belgium. Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor. Four first names. And then Thielemans. Brown: That’s funny. Thielemans: And in French-speaking Belgium, they will pronounce it Thielemans. But I was born April 29, 1922. Brown: That’s Duke Ellington’s birthday, as well. Thielemans: Yes. For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or [email protected] 1 Brown: All right. Thielemans: Yes, same day. Brown: Yeah, same day. Just a few years later. [laughs] Thielemans: [laughs] Oh, Duke. Okay. Brown: Where in Belgium? What city? Thielemans: In Brussels. Brown: That’s the capitol. Thielemans: In a popular neighborhood of Brussels called Les Marolles. There was… I don’t know, I wouldn’t know which neighborhood to equivalent in New York. Would that be Lower East Side? Or whatever… popular. And my folks, my father and mother, were operating, so to speak, a little beer café—no alcohol but beer, and different beers—in this café on High Street, Rue Haute, on the Marolles.

  • Phila PA Chronicles
Phila PA Chronicles Sharing memories of people, places and events that left their mark on the Philadelphia region in the 20th century June 28, 2013 He made his dreams come true: Daryl Hall My favorite musical group of all time, hands down, is Daryl Hall and John Oates. I’ve admired them since I first saw them on the Merv Griffin Show in 1980. That they were Philly boys made it even better. In pop music, duos tend to be “married off” for life. Though it’s hard to talk about Hall without Oates, today I’m going to concentrate on Hall—the taller, blonder half of the duo. Daryl Hall's solo Sacred Songs album cover Where did Daryl grow up? Daryl Franklin Hohl grew up in Cedarville, Chester County, on the outskirts of Pottstown. After graduating from Owen J. Roberts High School in 1964, young Daryl headed to Temple University, eager to shake off the constraints of his small town. Daryl has said, “I had vague ideas of a music career. I was always a musician. Temple was considered to be the city college. I wanted to move to Philadelphia for the music.” How did Daryl get his start in music? Once in the city, Daryl immersed himself in Philly’s musical scene, gravitating toward soul, R&B and the burgeoning Sound of Philadelphia. He sang with the Delfonics and the Stylistics and got to know Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Tommy Bell. Hall remembers spending time on Philly street corners, harmonizing with other singers. Daryl also hung out with the Temptations when they performed at the Uptown Theater in North Philadelphia.

1 1 2 Originally only Brian Ray & his buddy Oliver Leiber were gonna come by and hang out…(Brian is Paul McCartney’s blonde guitar player…he’s also fronting a new band called The Bayonets… Then I found out Denny Laine of Moody Blues & Wings fame was in town…and you know we love Denny…so he’s gonna stop by…he’s in town for Hollywood Show The Westin Los Angeles Airport Address: 5400 W Century Blvd And then I was in my local record emporium FREAKBAET Records and was informed that two time Grammy winning guitarist Laurence Juber was gonna be playing IN THE STORE…today so I thought I’d invite him on….so no music today…just guitar players talking…(kidding)…have `em pick songs…tell stories and maybe even play! So..speaking of Denny Laine, Laurence Juber and Brian Ray… let’s start with a set songs that features none of those guys….Here are the Beatles to make us feel a little bit better after a pretty tough week… 9AM The Beatles - Let It Be - album version - Let It Be (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul 2 3 “Let It Be” was the last song properly recorded on multi-track at Apple Studios during the “Get Back” sessions in January 1969. It was completed in eight takes (numbered Take 20 through 27 to match the film crew clapboard numbers) on January 31, 1969, the day after the rooftop concert. Take 27 had two complete performances of the song and the first of these Take 27 performances was deemed the best.
