Alfonso Gomez Rejon Brooke Lipton’s energy is contagious. A native of Phoenix, AZ, Brooke was a rising star in the LA dance scene at the young age of 12. She spent her summers dancing at the LA studios and conventions and was highly sought after by the industry’s top choreographers. Brooke moved to LA to pursue her dream of being a professional dancer, and has worked with artists such as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Paula Abdul, to name a few. Brooke toured the world with Britney Spears for over eight years, including the “Dream Within A Dream” Tour, “The Onyx Hotel” Tour and “Circus” promo tour. She choreographed for six seasons on FOX’s hit TV show Glee, which had over 750 musical performances. Glee’s phenomenal success also included two world tours, “The Glee Project” Season 1 and 2, and Glee Live 3D The Movie. On Glee, Brooke worked with such iconic stars as Shirley Maclaine, Carol Burnett, Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kristen Chenowith and Ricky Martin. Brooke’s choreography can be seen on shows like ”Bones”, “The Goldbergs”, “Chasing Life”, “American Horror Story”, and “The New Normal”. Hard at work in the dance world, she is also a mother of two children. She continues to teach internationally, giving back to the community that she loves so much. .

I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.

This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. December Spotlight WALTER GRAHAM, ’99 and ‘15 Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education Master of Music in Choral Conducting Recently named the Teacher of the Year for 2020-2021 at Dreher High School, Walter Graham is in his 8th year as the Director of Choral Studies and in his 4th year as Chair of the Fine Arts department at Dreher. Previously, he served as the chorus teacher at Crayton Middle School (5 years), the music teacher at Nursery Road Elementary School (6 years) and at Hopkins Elementary School (2 years). Since the 2016-2017 academic year, Mr. Graham has served as the Lead Choral Teacher for Richland School District One. In 2013, Mr. Graham was instrumental in establishing and implementing audition standards for Richland One School District Honor Choir participants. The honor choir experience was enhanced from student nominations to an audition process that rated student abilities in solfege, sight-singing, and vocal technique. Under Mr. Graham’s direction, the Dreher Concert Choir was featured at the 2018 SCMEA Conference. Additionally, his choirs have performed with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, the University of South Carolina Symphony, the Palmetto Mastersingers, the Sandlapper Singers, the Fort Jackson Army Band, Ethan Bortnick (prodigy pianist), and Damian McGintey (from the television shows Glee and The Glee Project). In recent years, his concert choir was featured in the SC Governor’s Carolighting and at other community programs throughout South Carolina. In 2015, Mr. Graham was the first recipient of the Marjorie Stands Music Educator Award by the Symphony League of the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra.

Principal March 1, 2015 Dear Glee Producer, We are excited to share with you what Glee” has meant to us at Verdugo Hills High School. I grew up with Fame, the film and then the TV show, in the 80’s when I was in college and then when I started teaching. I taught middle school music for 6 years and high school for just over 7years. I then became an administrator, an assistant principal and eventually a principal. I directed pop/jazz/show choir-type groups all the way from when I was in high school through college and at each of my schools. (“Showstoppers” at Berendo MS, “Jazz Singers” at Huntington Park HS, etc.). For the last three years I have been the principal at Verdugo Hills High School and this is where I need to pick up the story and specifically the impact and direction of “Glee”. (“The Glee Project” was actually filmed in part at Verdugo Hills HS in Season 1). When I was hired by the superintendent to be the principal at Verdugo, I was given two charges: improve the relationship between the school and the community and bring students back to the school/increase enrollment. I had built music programs before and had run major enrollment drives at some of my schools, so I knew what I had to do.
