    ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) It May Look Like a Living Room…: The Musical Number and the Sitcom By Robin Stilwell Georgetown University 1. They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139).

I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.

A leader and pioneer in curriculum based standards and exciting and educational custom designed workshops and presentations, she has been recognized as a cutting edge and highly effective creative presence within public and private schools nationwide. She has been dedicated to arts and education for the past twenty years. Graduating from New York University with a degree in theater and communication, she began her work early on as a theatrical talent agent and casting director in Hollywood. Due to her expertise and comprehensive focus on education, she was asked to teach acting to at-risk teenagers with Jean Stapleton's foundation, The Academy of Performing and Visual Arts in East Los Angeles. Out of her work with these artistically talented and gifted young people, she co-wrote and directed a musical play entitled Second Chance, which toured as an Equity TYA contract to over 350,000 students in California and surrounding states. National mental health experts recognized the play as an inspirational arts model for crisis intervention, and interpersonal issues amongst teenagers at risk throughout the country. WGBH/PBS was so impressed with the play they commissioned it for adaptation to teleplay in 1996.

    Audition Packet for Xanadu JR and Much Ado About Nothing XANADU JR Director: Robert Lee Robert is the Artistic Director of The Underground Theatre. Originally from Louisiana, Robert has worked in many spots around the country as a Theatre artist. He is beyond ecstatic to be working on the hilarious Xanadu, it's been on his bucket list for years. His Duluth directing credits include Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Clown Bar, Cabaret, 1984, Death of a Salesman (The Underground), Peter Pan, It Runs in the Family (The Playhouse), Cat in the Hat, Willy Wonka, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Some Sneaky Sheep (The Playhouse Family Theatre), Rx (Renegade Theater Company). He also regularly appears on the Renegade stage as an improviser. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Director: Christina Stroup Christina Stroup was hired to perform in The Full Monty this past summer and she fell so in love with Duluth, she moved here from Houston, TX! Recently she appeared on the NorShor stage in Don’t Dress For Dinner and Rags to Ritzes. Christina has been a professional actress for over 10 years and is a proud Actor’s Equity member. She’s worked regionally all over the U.S. Christina graduated with a BFA in musical theater and opera from Sam Houston State University. In the past few years, Christina started directing and found a new passion for theater. She’s directed many variety shows and musicals. A personal favorite is Once On This Island Jr. Christina performed in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Lone Star Festival in London.

Fanny Brice, America's Funny Girl will be open May 23, 2012 and run until June 17, 2012. Previews begin May 20. Fanny Brice, America’s Funny Girl is a reworking of Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s 2009 hit production Fanny Brice: The Real Funny Girl. Writer and Director David H. Bell modified the script and is bringing Asolo Rep the most inspiring version yet. TCPalm raved, “Marya Grandy may not be the real Fanny Brice…but she just might be a new version of Ethel Merman. That’s with a little Patti LuPone and the emotional singing delivery al a Judy Garland tossed in for good measure”. WJTW FM said “what really brought the audience to its feet for a standing ovation however was the finale…it doesn’t get any better than that.” Born Fania Borach on the Lower East Side of New York City in 1891, Brice began her career on stage with a burlesque troupe at the age of 17. Two years later she was headlining for the Ziegfeld Follies, and by 1921 she released her signature song, “My Man.” Brice became one of the biggest comedic stars to grace the stage, yet her personal life wasn’t as successful, with heartache and betrayal followed her at every step and her three marriages all ending in divorce.
