Audition Packet for Xanadu JR and Much Ado About Nothing XANADU JR Director: Robert Lee Robert is the Artistic Director of The Underground Theatre. Originally from Louisiana, Robert has worked in many spots around the country as a Theatre artist. He is beyond ecstatic to be working on the hilarious Xanadu, it's been on his bucket list for years. His Duluth directing credits include Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Clown Bar, Cabaret, 1984, Death of a Salesman (The Underground), Peter Pan, It Runs in the Family (The Playhouse), Cat in the Hat, Willy Wonka, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Some Sneaky Sheep (The Playhouse Family Theatre), Rx (Renegade Theater Company). He also regularly appears on the Renegade stage as an improviser. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Director: Christina Stroup Christina Stroup was hired to perform in The Full Monty this past summer and she fell so in love with Duluth, she moved here from Houston, TX! Recently she appeared on the NorShor stage in Don’t Dress For Dinner and Rags to Ritzes. Christina has been a professional actress for over 10 years and is a proud Actor’s Equity member. She’s worked regionally all over the U.S. Christina graduated with a BFA in musical theater and opera from Sam Houston State University. In the past few years, Christina started directing and found a new passion for theater. She’s directed many variety shows and musicals. A personal favorite is Once On This Island Jr. Christina performed in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Lone Star Festival in London. -

Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

The Educated Spectator: Cinema and Pedagogy in France, 1909-1930 Casiana Elena Ionita Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Casiana Elena Ionita All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Educated Spectator: Cinema and Pedagogy in France, 1909-1930 Casiana Elena Ionita This dissertation draws on a wide range of sources (including motion pictures, film journals, and essays) in order to analyze the debate over the social and aesthetic role of cinema that took place in France from 1909 to 1930. During this period, as the new medium became the most popular form of entertainment, moralists of all political persuasions began to worry that cinematic representations of illicit acts could provoke social unrest. In response, four groups usually considered antagonistic — republicans, Catholics, Communists, and the first film avant- garde known as the Impressionists — set out to redefine cinema by focusing particularly on shaping film viewers. To do so, these movements adopted similar strategies: they organized lectures and film clubs, published a variety of periodicals, commissioned films for specific causes, and screened commercial motion pictures deemed compatible with their goals. Tracing the history of such projects, I argue that they insisted on educating spectators both through and about cinema. Indeed, each movement sought to teach spectators of all backgrounds how to understand the new medium of cinema while also supporting specific films with particular aesthetic and political goals. Despite their different interests, the Impressionists, republicans, Catholics, and Communists all aimed to create communities of viewers that would learn a certain way of decoding motion pictures. -

A reading to place the work of Musidora within a queer feminist history, combining Handelman’s research at the Cinematheque Francaise with texts from Kathy Acker, William Burroughs, Flawless Sabrina, and the lost love letters between Musidora and the writer Colette, translated into English for the first time for this evening. Also featuring an excerpt of Everett Quinton and Charles Ludlam's The Mystery of Irma Vep. Workshopped in collaboration with the Henry Art Gallery & University of Washington graduate students Annie Fee, Tracy Gregory, Coley Mixan, and John Boucher. With a limited edition print by PARTICIPANT PRESS. Irma Vep, the first femme fatale or “vamp” of cinema history which set the tone for dozens of archetypal successors such as Catwoman and La Femme Nikita, turns 100 this year. The character first emerged in Les Vampires, a seven-hour serial film – one of the longest ever made – in 1915 by director Louis Feuillade. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the legendary film, Michelle Handelman, filmmaker, artist and professor in the Fashion Institute of Technology’s new Film, Media and Performing Arts department, will present the first series of programming in New York to examine the cultural impact of Les Vampires and illuminate the vast body of work of Musidora, the prolific silent film icon that starred as Irma Vep. -

The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release January 1994 GAUNONT PRESENTS: A CENTURY OF FRENCH CINEMA January 28 - April 14, 1994 A retrospective tracing the history of French cinema through films produced by Gaumont, the world's oldest movie studio, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on January 28, 1994. GAUMONT PRESENTS: A CENTURY OF FRENCH CINEMA, on view through April 14, includes fifty programs of films made from 1900 to the present. All of the films are recently restored, and new 35mm prints were struck especially for the exhibition. Virtually all of the sound films feature new English subtitles as well. A selection of Gaumont newsreels [actualites) accompany the films made prior to 1942. The exhibition opens with the American premiere of Bertrand Blier's Un deux trois soleil (1993), starring Marcello Mastroianni and Anouk Grinberg, on Friday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m. A major discovery of the series is the work of Alice Guy-Blache, the film industry's first woman producer and director. She began making films as early as 1896, and in 1906 experimented with sound, using popular singers of the day. Her film Sur la Barricade (1906), about the Paris Commune, is featured in the series. Other important directors whose works are included in the exhibition are among Gaumont's earliest filmmakers: the pioneer animator and master of trick photography Emile Cohl; the surreal comic director Jean Durand; the inventive Louis Feuillade, who went on to make such classic serials as Les Vampires (1915) and Judex (1917), both of which are shown in their entirety; and Leonce Perret, an outstanding early realistic narrative filmmaker. -

A Gluttonous Strongman and Irascible Stoic: Heracles in Greek Epic from Homer to Nonnus The Norwegian Institute at Athens, 01.11.2018 Introduction Heracles – ladies and gentlemen! – was the perhaps most prominent, most popular, and most prevalent figure in ancient mythology. He was present in as good as all aspects of ancient Greek (and Roman) culture, religion, literature, iconography, etc., but also in many facets of daily life. The focus of my lecture today will be on Heracles as a character in ancient Greek epic. We know from various sources that Heracles was used as an eponymous hero in numerous Greek epics from the Archaic Period onward. However, unfortunately, most of these Heracles epics do not survive (the only exception being the pseudo-Hesiodic Aspis). On the other hand, existing Greek epic from Homer to Nonnus is not concerned with the life and deeds of Heracles. However, these epics nonetheless all include references to Heracles, be it on a diegetic or on a metadiegetic level. In what follows, I will offer a selective tour de fource through existing Greek epic with a focus on the appearance and function of Heracles in the Homeric epics, in Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica, and in Nonnus of Panopolis’ Dionysiaca. For reasons of limited time (and with a bleeding heart!) I will exclude Hesiod and Quintus of Smyrna. As a first step, I need to lay out some of my methodological premises, the main of which is narratological character analysis. XANADU - CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS Sonny Malone - is the young male lead from the beaches of California. He is wide-eyed, full of dreams and can be a bit sensitive; after all, he is an artist! While Sonny may not be the brightest, he is very sincere and earnest. Actor with excellent comedic timing and singing voice. Kira - Kira is the Greek heroine and loveable, young ingénue. She begins the play as Clio, the youngest and the most idealistic of the Muses. With the addition of leg warmers and an Australian accent, she quickly becomes Kira to help Sonny realize his dreams. She is ambitious, smart and like Sonny, pure of heart. Must be a strong actor, singer, dancer. Danny Maguire - Danny Maguire is a real estate magnate and owner of the Xanadu theater. He should be a malleable actor who can evolve from being guarded about protecting the theater to becoming partners with Sonny and then betraying him. Danny should be an experienced singer. The Andrews Sisters - The Andrews Sisters (Maxene, Patty and Laverne) are an exact duplicate of the Andrews Sisters that were famous in the 1940s. Great singers - might double with other ensemble roles. The Tubes - The Tubes is an iconic, hard-rockin' new-wave band of the 80s. Band members can be ANY GENDER. Must have a lot of energy and sing with character. Melpomene - Muse of Tragedy, is the eldest of the Muses and is most responsible for plotting against Kira. Strong acting and singing required. Calliope - Calliope, Muse of Epics, is Melpomene's "Wing-Muse." She is equally devious and listens closely to her sister's direction.
