  • Authors' Accepted Version: to Be Published in Antiquity Tormented
Authors’ Accepted Version: to be published in Antiquity Tormented Alderney: archaeological investigations of the Nazi labour and concentration camp of Sylt Sturdy Colls, C.¹, Kerti, J.¹ and Colls, K.¹ ¹ Centre of Archaeology, L214 Flaxman Building, Staffordshire University, College Road, Stoke-on- Trent, ST4 2DF. Corresponding author email: [email protected] Abstract Following the evacuation of Alderney, a network of labour and SS concentration camps were built on British soil to house foreign labourers. Despite government-led investigations in 1945, knowledge concerning the history and architecture of these camps remained limited. This article reports on the findings of forensic archaeological investigations which sought to accurately map Sylt labour and concentration camp the for the first time using non-invasive methods and 3D reconstructive techniques. It also demonstrates how these findings have provided the opportunity – alongside historical sources – to examine the relationships between architecture, the landscape and the experiences of those housed there. Introduction The Nazis constructed a network of over 44,000 (concentration, extermination, labour, Prisoner of War (PoW) and transit) camps across Europe, imprisoning and murdering individuals opposed to Nazi ideologies, and those considered racially inferior (Megargee & White 2018). Information about these sites varies in part due to Nazi endeavours to destroy the evidence of their crimes (Arad 1987: 26; Gilead et al. 2010: 14; Sturdy Colls 2015: 3). Public knowledge regarding the camps that were built on British soil in the Channel Islands is particularly limited, not least of all because they were partially demolished and remain “taboo” (Carr & Sturdy Colls 2016: 1). Sylt was one of several camps built on the island of Alderney (Figures 1 & 2).

  • Holocaust Archaeology: Archaeological Approaches to Landscapes of Nazi Genocide and Persecution
HOLOCAUST ARCHAEOLOGY: ARCHAEOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO LANDSCAPES OF NAZI GENOCIDE AND PERSECUTION BY CAROLINE STURDY COLLS A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham September 2011 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The landscapes and material remains of the Holocaust survive in various forms as physical reminders of the suffering and persecution of this period in European history. However, whilst clearly defined historical narratives exist, many of the archaeological remnants of these sites remain ill-defined, unrecorded and even, in some cases, unlocated. Such a situation has arisen as a result of a number of political, social, ethical and religious factors which, coupled with the scale of the crimes, has often inhibited systematic search. This thesis will outline how a non- invasive archaeological methodology has been implemented at two case study sites, with such issues at its core, thus allowing them to be addressed in terms of their scientific and historical value, whilst acknowledging their commemorative and religious significance.

  • The Gloucestershire Urban Economic Strategy 2007-2015
DRAFT Gloucestershire First 26 April 07 THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE URBAN ECONOMIC STRATEGY 2007-2015 INTRODUCTION 1. Urban Gloucestershire lies astride the M5 and is made up of Gloucester City, Cheltenham Borough and parts of the Borough of Tewkesbury and Stroud District. With a total population of 310,800 and forecast by 2026 to be at least 370,800 this is a significant urban conurbation particularly in regional terms, as evidenced by the identification of Gloucester and Cheltenham in the draft Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) as two of the regionally Strategically Significant Cities and Towns (SSCTs)1. Within the Gloucestershire economy this urban area plays a vital role. Defining Urban Gloucestershire Urban Gloucestershire cannot be delineated precisely on a map without limiting some initiatives unnecessarily. In general it is those geographical areas of the Central Vale that have a concentration of people and businesses that by working together can complement one another and increase the economy of Gloucestershire. It therefore includes the whole of Gloucester City and Cheltenham Borough. It also will generally include, within Tewkesbury Borough, Tewkesbury Town and Ashchurch as well as the parishes of Brockworth, Hucclecote, Churchdown, Innsworth, Longford and embraces Gloucestershire Airport and Dowty/Smiths, although there are some aspects of these that are also 'rural' and will also be covered by the Gloucestershire Rural Economic Strategy. Similarly it will also generally include in Stroud District the settlements of Hardwicke and those others that comprise the defined Stroud Urban Area: Stonehouse, Stroud, Thrupp, North and South Woodchester and Nailsworth, although parts of these are also 'rural'. Economic and administrative boundaries are not identical.

  • KD Report Kinloss
Braves and Apaches take Kinloss by storm!! What a way for our 2018 Bader Braves Young Aviators programme to kick off!! Glorious weather, Braves, Apaches, ideal flying conditions, fire engines and loads of fun!!!! It has become the custom to start our Young Aviators season with The Moray Flying Club at their Kinloss Barracks home (formerly RAF Kinloss) on the bank of the beautiful Moray Firth in the North of Scotland. This year was no exception but the weather was in that right from dawn the sky was blue and the sun shone and there were absolutely no concerns about getting all the flights in during the day. Once again our good friend and chief whipper-in, George Mackenzie, had all the Braves, their families and a good number of volunteers lined up at the main guardroom at 08.30 ready for the security formalities to be completed before the substantial convoy snaked its way around the perimeter road on its 1.5 mile journey to the Clubhouse, our home for the day. Club members were waiting to welcome their guests with the usual teas, coffees and rather scrummy biscuits and made sure everyone was comfortable before introductions, briefings and explanations. The first wave of flights were scheduled for 09.15 so there was no time to waste before the first three Young Aviators were filling in authority documents whilst pilots completed flying logs and Operations Chief, Mick Dye, ushered everyone along ensuring that things flowed smoothly. The three club Cessna Aircraft were impressively lined up awaiting their first passengers who were quickly each aircraft taxied out to the far end of the runway, a journey of some distance and probably equivalent of something like two quid single on a London bus, before lining up ready for take-off.

  • February 2020 1
Police Aviation News 286 February 2020 1 ©Police Aviation Research Issue 286 February 2020 Police Aviation News 286 February 2020 2 EDITORIAL One day into the New World that is a United Kingdom that is nominally free of the European Union there might be an expectation that there would be general dancing in the streets and much flag waving. Well it seems that, but for the odd pocket of excess, life goes on as normal until the real deal is done at the end of this year. I expect that no-one really trusts any politician to get it right at all, never mind on time, so life goes on. As a supporter of Brexit the editor, Police Aviation News and PAvCon Europe, will continue serv- ing the needs and aspirations of the airborne emergency services industry across the world – and Europe. I do not expect any period of the transition to be visible. For years now the police across Europe have welcomed the unique PAvCon conference event to their countries, and occasionally to hosting within their establishments. The Bundespolizei headquarters building in central Berlin hosts this year’s event. Even without the modest award afforded the editor some years back in Munich, the new venue is itself seen as a rare and precious honour that is also appreciated by all the well-informed attendees currently signing up for the event. Further thanks from the editor to the Helicopter Association International for the recent Law Enforcement Award, sponsored by MD Helicopters, and the Safety award from Airborne Public Safety Association last summer, again sponsored by MD Helicopters.
