Mud Runner Oblivion

Neale Brothwood, Regional Manager for Marshall Fleet Solutions, bravely undertook the Mud Runner Oblivion challenge on 29th April at Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire.

This was a supreme test of fitness; participants had to complete a six mile gruelling cross country course. But it wasn’t as simple as just running round the course! Along the way, approximately every kilometre, there were ten different obstacles to overcome. To get past these hindrances, participants needed to climb up, over, round, under and swim through them! This was not an activity for the faint hearted and tested each person’s strength, endurance and coordination to the max!

Neale took part alongside his good friend Ravi and all proceeds raised will be donated to Cancer Research UK. To make a contribution to this worthy cause, please follow http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Neale-Ravi

We would like to congratulate Neale and Ravi and look forward to seeing the photos!

A Christmas drink for the East Anglian Air Ambulance Whilst most people were enjoying a well deserved rest over Christmas lunch and something warming to drink on Christmas Day, the East Anglian Air Ambulance helicopter, based at Cambridge Airport, was on duty and was called out on an emergency response to Norfolk, returning to its Cambridge Airport base in the early afternoon.

Although Cambridge Airport was closed for the Christmas Holiday weekend, aircraft refueller, Paul Fordham had offered to be on voluntary stand-by to assist East Anglian Air Ambulance if need be, and unhesitatingly came in and refuelled the helicopter. Richard Knight, Cambridge Airport Manager said: ‘This showed great commitment from Paul. Quite clearly, without his action, it would not have been possible for the helicopter to operate later that day or during the rest of the holiday shut-down period.’

Cambridge Airport welcomes double-first Cambridge Airport is delighted that European regional airline, Danube Wings, will launch their first ever UK scheduled services from the Cambridge region with twice-weekly non-stop flights to the Dole-Jura Airport commencing in June. The regional airport of the Franche- Comté province is the first international scheduled service destination to be offered from Cambridge Airport under its new leadership team.

The new scheduled flights operated by modern, highly fuel-efficient ATR72 aircraft with 70 seats will take just two hours and operate on Mondays and Fridays from Cambridge to Dole-Jura Airport, from June to September.

The flights will bring a welcome boost for international tourism to the region, especially from France, as this is the first direct UK air service from Dole-Jura to any British destination.

Danube Wings seats are on sale now via the airline’s website www.danubewings.eu on both a one-way and round-trip basis, but will also be bookable via local travel agents and tour operators.

Teamwork Spring 2012 6 Presentation of S h i n y A x e to Gerry Lennox

Gerry Lennox, who works as a Duty Manager at Cambridge Airport, worked as Senior Airport Fire Officer from March 1981 until December 2011; a very impressive 30 year period.

To mark this remarkable milestone of 30 continuous years managing the Airport’s fire appliances, Gerry was recently presented with a commemorative ‘shiny axe’ by Robert Marshall, Chief Executive of Marshall of Cambridge (Holdings) Ltd.

Robert Marshall said: ‘Thirty years heading the Airport’s fire services and maintaining a high level of preparedness and readiness to meet all emergency contingencies is quite a remarkable record. Throughout this period the Airport Fire Service has been praised and commended by the regulatory authorities for its exceptionally high standards.’

An E l e c t r i c C a r for Cambridge Airport Cambridge Airport is now one of the most ‘switched on’ Airports in the having taken delivery of a new Peugeot ION all electric motor car. Marshall Environmental Manager, James Heffron, said: “Peugeot ION is perfect for short regular journeys in and around the Airport, and as this green technology becomes more affordable and accessible, we have plans to see more electric vehicles operating within the Marshall Businesses”.

The car was supplied to the Airport by Marshall Peugeot in Cambridge. The all-electric car is powered by a rear mounted 64bhp motor, whilst the 88-cell, 16 kWh lithium ion battery pack is mounted under the centre of the vehicle. The car has a very respectable performance with a top speed of 81 mph and 0-62 mph acceleration in 15.9 seconds. Like all electric cars the ION can be charged via a standard household electric outlet. Its battery pack can be charged in around 6 hours, after which it can achieve 93 miles of driving.

Airport Director, Archie Garden, said: “The Airport has been taking a very proactive stand towards ‘sustainability in Aviation’ and with its zero CO² emissions per kilometre ‘at tailpipe’, the ION will contribute significantly to reducing the carbon emissions from Cambridge Airport”.

Luke gained his PPL licence at Cambridge AeroClub in the late 1990s; he joined as an instructor in 2001 and was appointed as CFI in 2006. Since taking on this role Luke has managed the replacement of the existing C152 fleet with the C172 and the introduction of the aerobatic training, first in a Slingsby T67 260M and, more recently, an Extra EA200, which is also used for tailwheel conversions. It is thought this may be the first time this type of aircraft has been used for aerobatics and tailwheel conversion training and good results by club members in ‘beginner level’ aerobatics competitions over the last few years have underlined its success.

Throughout this period Luke has maintained an excellent safety record and his staff and club members enjoy the relaxed but professional atmosphere at the Club. ExecuJet Europe takes more prominent role in the UK

Not long after winning a five-year, exclusive contract to run Cambridge Airport’s FBO, ExecuJet Europe announced recently that it is to further strengthen its presence at the Airport. The business aviation company plans to relocate its Aircraft Operations Department from Zurich, Switzerland to Cambridge during the second quarter of 2012, while, at the same time, retaining resources at its Headquarters to run its Swiss AOC.

“We recognise the value and flexibility of this sizeable new facility in the UK which has great potential to help develop and strengthen our European business further. Business aviation in the UK has traditionally been a very important market especially in terms of medium size and large business aircraft registered, generating over 30% of business aviation employment in the EU. Bolstering our presence in the UK is a logical next step for us,” explains Cedric Migeon, Managing Director ExecuJet in Europe. “In reducing some of our costs and using the excellent resources we have in Cambridge, we will be gaining a competitive advantage in the market.”

Some positions will move from Zurich to Cambridge, but the company’s European Headquarters, as well as ExecuJet Aviation Group’s Headquarters will remain in Zurich. Marshall Leasing keeps the red flag flying Marshall Leasing but the cars come in assorted colours

Marshall Aerospace Awarded Two-year C-130H Maintenance Service Contract from the Royal Netherlands Air Force

Marshall Aerospace has been awarded a two-year maintenance service contract extension from the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF). The service supports the RNLAF’s fleet of four Hercules C-130Hs and will see Marshall Aerospace carrying out scheduled C Check maintenance (C2, C3 and C4), which maintains aircraft airworthiness, between now and the end of 2013.

The maintenance work will be conducted in the UK, and between them the RNLAF’s four C-130Hs are due five C Checks during the contract period. Steve Fitz-Gerald, CEO of Marshall Aerospace, commented: “We first performed maintenance work for the Royal Netherlands Air Force back in 1994, plus we have performed a number of aircraft upgrades for them during recent years, so we’re delighted to have been awarded this service contract extension.”

MA Business Development Fayre

As part of actions coming out of the Great Place To Work survey, the MA Business Development team undertook to publicise the work done by this important function over the last few months. In January, February and March the BD team organised “BD Fayres” where all of the BD Marketing Executives and team members were present in a trade-show style event. No formal presentations, just face to face communication. Many staff were invited to come along to meet the team, who were happy to answer all questions on their particular account plans for 2012, opportunities and areas of responsibility. The events were a great success.

Jobs Fair Success

Potential new skilled recruits to Marshall Aerospace were given the chance to find out more about the company during a jobs fair organised at the BAE Systems site at Brough in East Yorkshire. In September 2011 BAE Systems announced plans to end manufacturing at Brough with the potential loss of up to 900 jobs. The jobs fair allowed employees to discuss opportunities in Cambridge in a number of disciplines.

Marshall Aerospace was represented by Jon Land, Head of Engineering Support, HR’s Jo Boyd, Debra Green and colleagues from Aeropeople. Commenting on the success of the day, Jo said: “This was a great opportunity to meet individuals who possess the Marshall Aerospace and Lockheed Martin skills that we require at Marshall Aerospace. We were able to signed an MOA which further promote the positions that we often find difficult to recruit for.” strengthens working relationships

In August 2011, four members of the MAA operation ran in the annual City to Surf race in Sydney. Peter Hunt, Rob Smith, Chris Gallwey and Greg Donaldson all finished the course under two hours and although delighted with their individual times they had plenty of aches and pains to show for their efforts.

The course is 14 kilometres in distance, starting from the intersection of Park and College Streets in Sydney’s Central Business District before heading up William St and through the tunnel at Kings Cross. The course continues along New South Head Rd through Rose Bay, then up ‘Heartbreak Hill’ with a severe gradient, which is the toughest part of the course. The finish is located at Australia’s most famous and spectacular Bondi Beach. 23 Like Marshall, the F Cross business has A first for Marshall as been a family-run affair since its it acquires VW Business formation in 1958 by Fred Cross.
