Whether we spend years of our lives tuning in every week, or a few days bingeing through a storyworld, TV finales act as sites of negotiation between the forces of media production and consumption. By tracing a history of finales from the first Golden Age of American television to our contemporary era of complex TV, my project provides the first book- length study of TV finales as a distinct category of narrative media. This dissertation uses finales to understand how tensions between the emotional and economic imperatives of participatory culture complicate our experiences of television. The opening chapter contextualizes TV finales in relation to existing ideas about narrative closure, examines historically significant finales, and describes the ways that TV endings create meaning in popular culture. Chapter two looks at how narrative anticipation motivates audiences to engage communally in paratextual spaces and share processes of closure.

The focus is mainly on process (political competition and decision making) rather than substance (public policy), and each of the stories we encounter raises issues that are as relevant today as they were when the tale was originally told.

  • An Analysis of Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite by Means
BOFF, Ibsen. An analysis of Woody Allen’s “Mighty Aphrodite” by means of relevance theory. Revista Virtual de Estudos da Linguagem – ReVEL . V. 5, n. 8, março de 2007. ISSN 1678-8931 [www.revel.inf.br]. AN ANALYSIS OF WOODY ALLEN ’S MIGHTY APHRODITE BY MEANS OF RELEVANCE THEORY Ibsen Boff 1 [email protected] Abstract: Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory is a cognitive approach to pragmatics that envisages inference as the central element responsible for bridging the gap between encoded meaning and utterance interpretation within a context. The present study attempts to suggest the applicability of the Relevance theoretical framework for analyzing and interpreting Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite. Findings seem to corroborate that Relevance Theory is an insightful pragmatic resource for recovering an author’s intentions, offering plausible explanations of how communicative meaning is mentally processed by the viewers. Implications of the findings are also proposed. Key words: Relevance Theory; inference; pragmatics; cognition. INTRODUCTION Pragmatics, as opposed to semantics and syntax, is a branch of semiotics that deals with the relation between signs or linguistic expressions and their users. According to Yule (2003), pragmatics is the study of speakers´ meaning inside a given context, invariably leading to more being communicated than actually said. In accordance with Relevance Theory, communication should be envisaged as a process of inferential recognition of the communicator’s intentions. By pursuing reasoning devices that allow the compilation of newer pieces of information through the combination of existing ones, the inferential process in natural language understanding makes it possible to explain how to bridge the gap between encoded meaning and utterance interpretation within a context.

Class of 1965 50th Reunion 1 2 BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY 50th Reunion 3 4 Dear Classmates, Here we are…fifty years later. What a milestone, and what a celebration! We were so delighted with the turnout at our 50th Reunion, June 5-7, 2015. It was terrific to reconnect with friends and classmates, see the transformed campus, and reflect on the top-notch education we received at Brandeis and that Brandeis still offers. This “golden celebration” afforded us the chance to come together as a class and rekindle fond memories of our Brandeis experience. Our 50th Reunion Committee worked tirelessly to provide an exciting line-up of events, from dinners and discussions to folk sing-alongs and social gatherings, all of which were memorable. As you know, we shared a digital copy of our 50th Reunion yearbook with all of our classmates before Reunion. To make sure we captured our class’s newest memories, we had a photographer take lots of pictures over Reunion weekend, and added them into this printed copy. Thank you to all for everything you did to make our 50th Reunion truly special. We trust this keepsake will remind you always of how special your Brandeis family truly is. Enjoy! With best wishes, 5 6 Special Thanks On behalf of the Institutional Advancement Division, we would like to thank the members of the Class of 1965 Reunion Committee William S.
