Withering Heights When one mentions the Presbyterian Church, the name that first comes to mind is that of the Scottish Calvinist clergyman John Knox. This dynamic religious leader of the Protestant Reformation founded the Presbyterian denomination and was at the beginning of his ministry in Edinburgh when he lost his beloved wife Marjorie Bowes. In 1564 he married again, but the marriage received a great deal of attention. This was because she was remotely connected with the royal family, and Knox was almost three times the age of this young lady of only seventeen years. She was Margaret Stewart, daughter of Andrew Stewart, 2nd Lord of Ochiltree. She bore Knox three daughters, of whom Elizabeth became the wife of John Welsh, the famous minister of Ayr. Their daughter Lucy married another clergyman, the Reverend James Alexander Witherspoon. Their descendant, John Knox Witherspoon (son of another Reverend James Alexander Witherspoon), signed the Declaration of Independence on behalf of New Jersey and (in keeping with family tradition) was also a minister, in fact the only minister to sign the historic document. John Knox Witherspoon (1723 – 1794), clergyman, Princeton’s sixth president and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Just like Declaration of Independence signatory John Witherspoon, actress Reese Witherspoon is also descended from Reverend James Alexander Witherspoon and his wife Lucy (and therefore John Knox). The future Academy Award winner, born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon, was born in New Orleans, having made her début appearance at Southern Baptist Hospital on March 22, 1976. New Orleans born Academy Award winning actress, Reese Witherspoon Reese did not get to play Emily Brontë’s Cathy in “Wuthering Heights” but she did portray Becky Sharp in Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair”. -

Abbott and Costello haven't made a picture all day." And he was right. fter the smash success of their first starring feature,Buck Privates, (1941) burlesque and Aradio comics Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were the number one box office attraction in the country--and literally saved Universal Studios from bankruptcy. In fact, the only movie that outgrossed Buck Privates at the time was Gone with the Wind. Anxious to keep the team working, Universal Studios had already completed production on their next film, a non-music spoof of two popular film genres of the era--the Haunted House movie and Gangster melodrama--then titled Oh Charlie! (a reference to a running gag in the film where a dead gangster's body keeps turning up). But when the huge box office returns fromBuck Privates began rolling in, Universal temporarily shelved Oh Charlie! to put the team in an- other service themed follow-up, In the Navy. When they returned to Oh Charlie! , Universal discovered test audiences for the film wondered why the Andrews Sisters, who had been in the two previous hits, were absent in this one. So additional re-shoots were required to include the trio, now making it a horror/ comedy, with a couple of songs thrown in. The title was eventually changed to Hold That Ghost and became the third smash hit for Abbott and Costello that year, continuing a string of successes that would keep them among the top box office attractions for the next ten years and would also serve as the inspiration for another classic, 1948's Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. -

Media Release For immediate release June 18, 2021 An actor’s life and backstage strife during WWII INSPIRED by memories of his years working as a dresser for actor-manager Sir Donald Wolfit, Ronald Harwood’s evocative, perceptive and hilarious portrait of backstage life comes to Melville Theatre this July. Directed by Jacob Turner, The Dresser is set in England against the backdrop of World War II as a group of Shakespearean actors tour a seaside town and perform in a shabby provincial theatre. The actor-manager, known as “Sir”, struggles to cast his popular Shakespearean productions while the able-bodied men are away fighting. With his troupe beset with problems, he has become exhausted – and it’s up to his devoted dresser Norman, struggling with his own mortality, and stage manager Madge to hold things together. The Dresser scored playwright Ronald Harwood, also responsible for the screenplays Australia, Being Julia and Quartet, best play nominations at the 1982 Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards. He adapted it into a 1983 film, featuring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, and received five Academy Award nominations. Another adaptation, featuring Ian McKellen and Anthony Hopkins, made its debut in 2015. “The Dresser follows a performance and the backstage conversations of Sir, the last of the dying breed of English actor-managers, as he struggles through King Lear with the aid of his dresser,” Jacob said. “The action takes place in the main dressing room, wings, stage and backstage corridors of a provincial English theatre during an air raid. “At its heart, the show is a love letter to theatre and the people who sacrifice so much to make it possible.” Jacob believes The Dresser has a multitude of challenges for it to be successful. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The life and career of actor Anthony Perkins seems almost like a movie script from the times in which he lived. One of the dark, vulnerable anti-heroes who gained popularity during Hollywood's "post-golden" era, Perkins began his career as a teen heartthrob and ended it unable to escape the role of villain. In his personal life, he often seemed as tortured as the troubled characters he played on film, hiding--and perhaps despising--his true nature while desperately seeking happiness and "normality." Perkins was born on April 4, 1932 in New York City, the only child of actor Osgood Perkins and Janet Esseltyn Rane. His father died when he was only five, and Perkins was reared by his strong-willed and possibly abusive mother. He followed his father into the theater, joining Actors Equity at the age of fifteen and working backstage until he got his first acting roles in summer stock productions of popular plays like Junior Miss and My Sister Eileen. He continued to hone his acting skills while attending Rollins College in Florida, performing in such classics as Harvey and The Importance of Being Earnest. Perkins was an unhappy young man, and the theater provided escape from his loneliness and depression. "There was nothing about me I wanted to be," he told Mark Goodman in a People Weekly interview. "But I felt happy being somebody else." During his late teens, Perkins went to Hollywood and landed his first film role in the 1953 George Cukor production, The Actress, in which he appeared with Spencer Tracy. -

Why Don’t You Pass the Time by Playing a Little Solitaire? By Fearless Young Orphan The Manchurian Candidate (1962) Directed by John Frankenheimer I saw it: August 19, 2010 Why haven’t I seen it yet? For the longest time, I didn’t even know what it was supposed to be about, or that it was supposed to be any good. It seemed like one of those movies that is famous for its confusing title. I even saw the 2004 remake first, and then this little beauty turned up on my list of classics. Candidate A platoon of American soldiers stationed in Korea comes under attack. Most of the platoon is rescued by Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey), who displays such valiant behavior that he is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor upon his return. This is good news for his mother, the Mrs. Iselin who is married to Senator Iselin (who, Raymond assures everyone adamantly, is only Raymond’s stepfather). Mrs. Iselin would like her husband to become the Vice President of the United States, and it certainly doesn’t hurt matters to have a hero in the family. Angela Lansbury, icy and quite beautiful, eats this role alive; she may be one of the most evil and frightening characters I’ve ever seen in a film. What is amusing about her is that we know from the moment we hear her speak that she is a villain, long before we know exactly what the hell she’s up to. Her son hates and fears her; he can’t get away from her fast enough. -

So lautete der erste Satz, den ein Vampir in einem amerikani schen Tonfilm sagen mußte, und der auch seinen Darsteller unsterblich machen sollte. Bei dem Namen Dracula bedürfen wir weder der Anschauung noch auch selbst des Bildes, sondern der Name, indem wir ihn verstehen, ist die bildlose einfache Vorstellung einer Urszene, die 1897 zum ersten Mal als Roman erschie nen, und dank dem Medienverbund zwischen Phonograph, Schreibmaschine, Hypnose, Stenographie und der Sekretärin Mina Harker schon im Roman selbst technisch reproduzierbar geworden ist.1 Aber ausgerechnet über ein Medium, das im Roman nicht erwähnt wird, sollte Draculas Wiederauferstehung seitdem Nacht für Nacht laufen. Weil Vampire und Gespenster Wiedergänger sind, und im Gegensatz zu Bü chern und ihren Autoren bekanntlich nicht sterben können, müssen sie sich neue Körper und Medien suchen, in die sie fahren können. Der Journalist Abraham Stoker hat den Nachruhm und die Wertschätzung seines Namens zusammen mit dem Medium eingebüßt, das ihn berühmt gemacht hatte, nur damit fortan der Name seines schattenlosen Titelhelden für immer als belichteter Schatten über Kinoleinwände geistern konnte. Aber Spielfilme kennen so wenig originale Schöpfersubjekte wie Individuen. Dracula ist eben bloß ein Name, und als solcher ein „individuelles Allgemeines" wie die Bezeichnung der Goethezeit, jener Epo che und Dichtungskonzeption, der auch Dracula poetologisch noch angehörte, für sogenannte Individuen und Phantome gleichermaßen lautete. Es ist in diesem Namen, daß wir Bela Lugosi denken.2 IL Seit Tod Brownings Dracula von 1931 braucht dieser Name um vorstellbar zu sein, nicht mehr verstanden werden, weil er selbst angefangen hatte, sich vorzu stellen. -
