Botanical Sciences 90 (2): 97-108, 2012 BOTÁNICA ESTRUCTURAL EL HÁBITO Y LA FORMA DE CRECIMIENTO EN LA TRIBU CACTEAE (CACTACEAE, CACTOIDEAE) MONSERRAT VÁZQUEZ-SÁNCHEZ1, 3, TERESA TERRAZAS1 Y SALVADOR ARIAS2 1Departamento de Botánica, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México 2Jardín Botánico, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México 3Autor para la correspondencia: [email protected] Resumen: Los términos ‘forma de crecimiento’ y ‘hábito’ con frecuencia se usan como sinónimos; sin embargo, su asignación a las diferentes especies resulta problemática en algunos grupos taxonómicos debido a la diversidad morfológica; éste es el caso en Cactaceae, particularmente en la tribu Cacteae de la subfamilia Cactoideae. Se estudió la morfología del tallo de 102 especies (26 géneros) de Cacteae con el objetivo de identificar el hábito y reconocer cuántas formas de crecimiento se presentan en la tribu, así como para hacer una distinción clara entre los términos ‘hábito’ y ‘forma de crecimiento’ para Cactaceae y discutir sus diferencias respecto a los conceptos de forma de vida y arquitectura vegetal. Con base en las observaciones y mediciones para 102 especies de Cacteae se reconocieron cuatro formas de crecimiento (cilíndrica, columnar, globosa y globosa-deprimida). Por su tamaño y lon- gevidad no es posible utilizar los términos ‘árbol’ o ‘hierba’ para las especies de Cacteae. El 12% de las especies estudiadas de esta tribu tienen ramificación basítona (arbustos) comoAcharagma roseana, Ferocactus pilosus y Thelocactus bicolor. Sugerimos utili- zar únicamente el término ‘forma crecimiento’ para referirse a los tallos de la tribu Cacteae con la finalidad de evitar confusiones. The Show Chairs will be there with their sign-up sheets. Available will be Publicity Fliers, Show Schedules, and Registration Slips. Have questions? Bring your Wave Garden 3/5 plant(s) for answers. Audience participation is encouraged! Marilynn has been a Calendar—April 6 member of the Club since 1978. Over the years, she has been President of the Club, Show Chair and Chair of numerous committees. She has participated in every show except one since 1978, going from Novice to Advanced and has judged shows. If you have questions, Marilynn should have the answers! Now for the pep talk—All of the members have wonderful plants. I know because I have seen them in the Mini-Show, brought in for Show and Tell, pictures on your smart -phones, etc. There is no reason not to bring your plant(s) in for the show – I did it once and was thrilled with the idea of something I grew being judged (crazy, I know). -

Doug Dawson is a recently retired math professor and past president of the Central Arizona C&SS. His plant interests include a large Lithops collection, interest in seed-growing of most cacti and succulents, extensive botanical travel in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Yemen, Socotra, South Africa and of course Namibia. His talk will be on the flora of Namibia from 3 different trips he has made there. Please attend and fall in love with Namibia as he has. __________________________________________________________________________ Plants of the Month: (see write-ups attached) CACTI – Monotypic SUCCULENT -- Lithops Bring your specimens in for our monthly mini-show. It will help you prepare for the real shows and give you an additional opportunity to show others your pride and joy. 35th Annual Inter-City Cactus and Succulent Show Schedule August 6-8, 2021 Los Angeles County Arboretum 301 N Baldwin Ave, Arcadia Competitive entries shall be as follows: NOVICE Exhibitor has won no more than 40 blue ribbons total in recognized CSS shows. ADVANCED Exhibitor has won 41 or more blue ribbons. No Commercial sellers. OPEN Exhibitor must have won 80 or more blue ribbons or be a commercial seller of Cacti or Succulents. Set-up Times Wed. 4th 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Thurs. 5th, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and Fri. 6th 8:00 am to 5:00 pm The sales area will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Show will be closed on Friday the 6th All entrants must register their total entries in the show registrar prior to placement on tables. Judging will begin at 5 pm on Friday the 6th Take-out Time is Sunday the 8th from 5:00 pm. Plants cannot be removed prior to this time. Today, we have at hand some two dozens of molecular phylogenetic studies on cacti that have been published during the past decade. These investigations offer various hypotheses about interrelationships among different groups of cacti and form the basis for a revised suprageneric classification system of the family Cactaceae as proposed here. -
