Preliminary Report on the Reproductive Biology of the Threatened Chisos Mountain Hedgehog Cactus BONNIE B. AMOS and CHRISTOS VASSILIOU Angelo State University, Texas Abstract: The Chisos Mountain hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus chisoensis, Cactaceae) is a narrow endemic restricted to an approximately 100 square mile area in Big Bend National Park, Texas. It was listed as threatened in 1987 as Echinocereus chisoensis var. chisoensis. An investigation of the reproductive biology and pollination ecology conducted in 1999 and 2000 revealed the taxon to be homogamous, self-incompatible, xenogamous, and heavily dependent upon the cactus oligolectic bee, Diadasia rinconis (Anthophoridae) for pollination. Despite infrequent bee visitation, fruit set from open pollination is high and fruits produce large numbers of seeds. Predation in 2002, probably from rodents as a result of severe drought conditions, was severe on plants, flower buds, and fruits. REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY Cryptic dioecy of Symplocos wikstroemiifolia Hayata (Symplocaceae) in Taiwan Yu-Chen WANG and Jer-Ming HU* Institute of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, National Taiwan University, Taipei 10617, Taiwan (Received November 25, 2010; Accepted March 24, 2011) ABSTRACT. Symplocos wikstroemiifolia Hayata is one of the few morphologically androdioecious spe- cies in Symplocaceae. Although this species has been proposed as cryptically dioecious, little is known about its patterns of sexual expression in the field. We studied the breeding system and reproductive biology of S. wikstroemiifolia in Taiwan. Field investigations showed that anthers of most morphologically hermaphroditic flowers did not produce pollen grains; thus, this flower type should be considered female. Nearly all flowering individuals produced only male or female flowers. The sex ratios were slightly male-biased, but did not sig- nificantly deviate from 1:1, congruent with the proposed cryptic dioecy status. However, two individuals pro- duced flowers that may have been functionally hermaphroditic, suggesting a variation of sexual expression in S. wikstroemiifolia. There were about 12 stamens per male flower but only five staminodes per female flower. No locules and ovules existed in the male flowers, while two locules within the ovary of the female flowers con- tained four ovules each (two large, two small). Male individuals produced cymes and thyrses, whereas female individuals only produced cymes. Some of these morphological characteristics differed from those previously described. Anthesis of most male and female flowers began before dawn and lasted for one to two days. Nev- ertheless, anther dehiscence, which only occurred under dry conditions, was not restricted to a specific time period during the day. -

Es ähnelt einerseits in der äußeren Wuchsform genau Astrophytum myriostigma Lemaire: wie dieses besitzt es meist fünf Rippen und ist dicht mit weißen Wollflocken bedeckt. Sobald jedoch die prächtigen, großen Blüten erscheinen wird andererseits klar, daß eine enge Verwandtschaft zu Astrophytum capricorne (Dietrich) Britton & Rose bestehen muß. Sie sind im Schlund orange bis tiefrot gefärbt und bei Befruchtung entwickelt sich eine purpur-violette, samenreiche Frucht. Die überraschende Mischung der vegetativen und generativen Merkmale bei Astrophytum coahuilense aus den Astrophytum-Linien des südlichen und nördlichen mexikanischen Hochlandes ist auch der Grund für einen noch heute andauernden Meinungsunterschied, wie diese schönen Pflanzen taxonomisch oder in ihrer evolutiven Entwicklung einzustufen sind. Einen Lösungsvor schlag hierzu finden Sie in einem Beitrag auf Seite 37. Astrophytum coahuilense sollte man an einem sonnigen Platz pflegen und von April bis Oktober maßvoll wässern. Ein rein mineralisches Substrat, wie beispielsweise Ziegelsplitt mit Sand gemischt, bietet dann nach trockener Überwinterung um 15-20°C die optimalen Voraussetzungen für regelmäßige Blüten während der sommerlichen Wachtumszeit.
