A Revision of the South American Fishes of the Genus Nannostomus Giinther (Family Lebiasinidae) STANLEY H. WEITZMAN and J. STANLEY COBB SMITHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO ZOOLOGY • NUMBER 186 SERIAL PUBLICATIONS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION The emphasis upon publications as a means of diffusing knowledge was expressed by the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Travasoss (1952) undertook the revision of the subgenus Jobertina of Pellegrin 1909 (Characidium with incomplete lateral line), he expressed some restrictions as he did not have the possibility to examine the type -species (= interruptum), the unique specimen being in Paris. Thanks to Professeur G u i b é of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, I had this opportunity in the course of a new revision required by the discovery of a species from French Guiana. The purpose of this paper is then to give a redescription with figure of the type, the descrip- tion of the new species and to end with some taxonomical and phyloge- netic hypothesis. I. Redescription of Jobertina interruptum (Pell, 1909) Holotype : cf (?) 32.5 mm standard length, collected by M.Job er t in 1878 in Brazil. Paris Museum: N» 09—309. Exact locality unknown, as the „Serra d'Estrello" referred to by Pel- legrin seems to be a „fantasy name". -

The facility was planning a trip to collect fishes near the city of Pucallpa, roughly eight air miles southwest of the city center, on the Peru. The Fishery, Diversity, and Conservation of Ornamental Fishes in the Rio Negro Basin, Brazil - A review of Project Piaba (1989-99). Ning Labbish Chao Universidade do Amazonas, Brazil & Bio-Amazonia Conservation International, USA. ABSTRACT The goal of Project Piaba is to investigate the diversity of fishes in the middle Rio Negro basin, providing a scientific basis for an ornamental fishery at commercially and ecologically sustainable levels. The project has focused on the diversity and ecology of fishes, and on the socio-economic implications of the fishery, generating information for resource management, biological conservation, and business opportunities for the ornamental fish industry. Major findings include: (1) the cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is the indicator species for the ornamental fishery, and changes in its numbers can significantly alter the socio-economic situation of riverine communities in the region, (2) species richness of the floodplain fishes is much greater than previously recorded (more than 400 species have been identified for the middle Rio Negro Basin), and the importance of the river channel as a barrier and refuge for floodplain fishes is evident, (3) climatic events such as El Niño can significantly alter fish diversity and affect the ornamental fishery of the floodplain (low water during the Pleistocene glacial period might be an important mechanism of speciation in the Neotropical region), (4) problems of fish health and live fish transport have been identified, but the issues cannot be solved by technology alone, (5) training local people and involving the ornamental fish industry, hobbyists, and regulatory agencies in the conservation of ornamental fishes has proceeded rapidly. -

Editor in charge: Uwe Fritz Abstract A new miniature species of the freshwater fsh genus Priocharax is described from the Rio Jamari, Rio Madeira drainage, Amazon basin. Priocharax varii sp. n. is the fourth species currently recognized in the genus and shares with the other three the presence of a conspicuous larval pectoral fn in adults, a fully toothed maxilla, a triangular pseudotympanum situated anterior to the ffth vertebra and a tiny size com- bined with a translucent body. The new species is diagnosed from congeners in having an adipose fn, a unique feature within Priocharax. Molecular identifcation of the new species and the other valid Priocharax species supports the morphological fndings.
