È con vero piacere che porto il mio saluto e quello di tutta l’istituzione che presiedo al Lombardia 2012, gara punta di diamante del calenda- rio ciclistico regionale. Questa edizione, in particolare, non è soltanto un giro attraverso pae- saggi tra i più belli del nostro territorio, ma è anche un giro attraverso la storia del ciclismo lombardo, italiano e internazionale. Alla classica ascesa verso il Ghisallo - con il Santuario e il Museo del ciclismo, entrambi meta di tantissimi appassionati del pedale - viene afﬁancata un’altra salita storica, temutissima e per questo entrata nel mito: il Muro di Sormano che, a cinquant’anni esatti dall’ultima volta, torna a mettere a dura prova i migliori ciclisti del mondo. Ma l’anniversario più importante celebrato dal Lombardia 2012 è un altro: la gara si tiene nel giorno del 70esimo compleanno di Felice Gimondi, corridore tra i più grandi della storia ciclistica nazionale e mondiale, nonché dirigente quotidianamente impegnato nell’animare il nostro panorama sportivo. Per omaggiarlo la partenza di questa edizione avrà luogo a Bergamo, nelle sue terre. Il mio augurio è che questo mix di novità, ricorsi storici e anniversari - unito all’altissimo livello dei partecipanti - possa rendere ancor più spettacolare questo giro, attirando un pubblico sempre più vasto sulle strade della Lombardia.

5 buon compleanno gimondi!

Felice Gimondi - o come soleva chiamarlo Gianni Brera, Fe- lix de Mondi - prova un certo imbarazzo per le testimonianze di affetto che da più parti lo hanno raggiunto. Si stupisce del calore che suscita il suo prossimo anniversario, che cadrà proprio il 29 settembre, giorno deputato al Lombardia 2012. Il primo pensiero di Felice, diplomatico vien da dire, va a Rcs Sport e La Gazzetta dello Sport che hanno deciso, per festeggiare i suoi 70 anni, di far partire da Bergamo il Giro di Lombardia. Per la città orobica è una novità assoluta e per questo Gimondi ha una parola anche per il governatore Formigo- ni, il quale «ha rinunciato al tradizionale via da Milano».

Il Giro di Lombardia si lega al campione di Sedrina per una preziosa vittoria, colta nel 1966 davanti a Eddy Merckx, che aveva già battuto pochi giorni prima nella Coppa Ago- stoni. Di quel giorno ricorda la volata a sei all’interno dello stadio Senigallia di Como, con Merckx un po’ chiuso all’interno da Adorni, e un attacco di Dancelli che fu neutralizzato sull’ultima curva, con Eddy secondo a una bici. Che non è mai poco.

Nonostante la giovane età, Gimondi temeva quel belga ap- pena 21enne, tanto da studiarne le mosse preventivamen- te. Finendo però per considerare l’improvvisazione, di fronte a tanta classe e tenacia, l’unica arma a sua disposizione. Un bell’esempio è il Lombardia di quattro anni dopo, quando Felice, pur di scombinare i piani del Cannibale, cercò di andargli via sull’Intelvi per anticiparne l’attacco. Il piano sembrò perfetto ﬁno al guizzo Bitossi che si rifece sotto e vinse in volata. Poco male, pur di battere il belga, Gimondi La prima vittoria al Lombardia di Felice Gimondi (1966) apprezzava arrivare piazzato («che, va ricordato, è sempre meglio First Gimondi victory at Lombardia (1966) dell’anonimato»). Per Gimondi, come avrete capito, correre in Lom- bardia ha un sapore speciale. Le strade di casa regalano emozioni, moltiplicano le forze. Buon compleanno Felice.

Felice Gimondi - or as Gianni Brera used to call him, Felix de Mondi - feels slightly uncomfortable facing the many proofs of affection he is receiving from all around. He is marveling about the warm- heartedness caused by his upcoming birthday which is precisely September 29, the exact day appointed for Lombardia 2012. Felice’s ﬁ rst thought goes - I would say tactfully - to Rcs Sport and La Gazzetta dello Sport which decided, for celebrating his 70th birthday, to set the start of the Giro di Lombardia in Bergamo. It is a pretty impressive innovation for the city of Bergamo and that is why Gimondi spent also a few words to thank Governor Formigoni who “ waived the traditional start from Milan”.

The Giro di Lombardia is linked to the Sedrina’s champion by a precious victory won in 1966 over Eddy Merckx, who he had already defeated some days before in the Coppa Agostoni. He remembers this day for the six riders’ sprint on the premises of the Como Senigallia Stadium, with Merckx slightly internally blocked by Adorni, and an attack by Dancelli who got neutralized on the last curb and Eddy ﬁ nishing in the second place by a bike length. Which is not bad at all.

In spite of his young age, Gimondi worried about this barely 21 years old Belgian to the point that he studied his moves in advance. At the end he made up his mind that improvisation was the sole available defense against such class and tenacity. The Lombardia four years later is a good conﬁ rmation of this decision, when Felice, just in order to upset the “Cannibal’s” plans, attempted Una carriera invidiabile to break away on the Intelvi to prevent his attack. Partenza da Bergamo in direzione est per superare subito il Colle dei Pasta (m 413) e quindi portarsi con continui saliscendi (secondo transito in Bergamo) a Torre de’ Busi dove inizia la prima vera salita della corsa. Si affronta la salita di Valcava (9.6 km al 9%, max 17% - m 1336) su strada di montagna con carreggiata sinuosa a ristretta e 14 tornanti. Discesa tecnica (anche con pendenze importanti) su Costa Valle Imagna, Roncola per poi immettersi nelle strade della pianura bergamasca che conducono in Brianza. Passaggio breve per Colle Brianza e discesa su Dolzago, Molteno e Oggiono e via Pusiano, Asso ci si immette in Valassina dove a Maglio la corsa svolta a sinistra e immediatamente inizia la salita della Colma di Sormano (m 1124). Poche centinaia di metri dopo Maglio si imbocca sinistra il Muro di Sormano (2 km al 15% ) su strada stretta (da poco restaurata), molto ripida, in parte all’interno di un boschetto, con tornanti strettissimi e con pendenze attorno ai 1000 m di percorrenza che superano il 25% fino a sfiorare il 30%. Superata la Colma segue la discesa (in falsopiano nella prima parte, poi molto tecnica con molti tornanti) su Nesso dove si riprende la strada costiera per raggiungere Regatola di Bellagio, dove inizia la salita del Ghisallo (m 754) con pendenze fino al 14% su strada ampia con diversi tornanti. La discesa, molto veloce per lunghi rettilinei, si interrompe a Asso per deviare su Valbrona, Onno, sempre su strade ampie e raggiungere Oggiono dove cominciano gli ultimi km con la salita a Ello e la discesa su Galbiate e Lecco.

Start from Bergamo towards the east in order to immediately cross the Colle dei Pasta (m 413) and proceed along uninterrupted ups and downs (second passage in Bergamo) in the direction of Torre de’ Busi where the real first climb of the race takes place. The riders have to face the uphill climb of Valcava (9.6 km at 9%, max 17% - m 1,336) on a mountain road featuring a winding up and sometimes narrowed roadway with 14 U-bends. Technical descent (showing sometimes important slopes) towards Costa Valle Imagna, Roncola introducing the Bergamo plain roads leading to the Brianza region. A brief crossing of Colle Brianza and descent towards Dolzago, Molteno and Oggiono through Pusiano, Asso when the race enters the Valassina region reaching Maglio where it makes a turn to the left and straight away begins the climb to Colma di Sormano (m 1124). A few hundred meters after crossing Maglio the race turns to the left into the Muro di Sormano (Sormano Wall) (2 km at 15% ) on a narrow and very steep (recently repaired) road, partly running through a grove, featuring steep U-bends and gradients at time exceeding 25% and even coming close to 30% around meter 1,000 of the route. After the crossing of la Colma comes the descent towards Nesso (on apparently flat ground in the first part, then becoming very technical with a great number of U-bends) where the race goes back to the coastal road towards Regatola di Bellagio from where the climb of the Ghisallo (m 754) starts, featuring gradients up to 14% on a wide road with some bends. The very steep descent along extended straight roads comes to an end in Asso where it turns towards Valbrona, Onno, still following wide roads up to Oggiono where the last kilometers begin with the uphill climb to Ello and the descent towards Galbiate and Lecco.
