Palestine - Walking through History April 04 - 08, 2019 Cultural Touring | Hiking | Cycling | Jeep touring Masar Ibrahim Al-Khalil is Palestine’s long distance cultural walking route. Extending 330 km from the village of Rummana in the northwest of Jenin to Beit Mirsim southwest of Al-Haram al-Ibrahimi (Ibrahimi Mosque) in Hebron. The route passes through more than fifty cities and villages where travelers can experience the legendary Palestinian hospitality. Beginning with a tour of the major sites in Jerusalem, we are immediately immersed in the complex history of the region. Over the five days, we experience sections of this route, hiking and biking from the green hills of the northern West Bank passing through the desert south of Jericho to Bethlehem. Actively traveling through the varied landscapes, biodiverse areas, archaeological remains, religious sites, and modern day lively villages, we experience rich Palestinian culture and heritage. Box 335 www.sipprojects.org Boulder CO 80306-0335 [email protected] Trip Report to Israel and the West Bank, January 2018 Peter Ornstein, Bernard Amadei (Jan 1-8), Tara Winer (Jan 6-8) This is an overview of the trip that several SIPP board members took to Israel and the West Bank in January, 2018. Jan 2 - Peter and Bernard met with Avner Goren at the Eyal Hotel in Jerusalem. Avner briefed us on plans for the following several days and informed us that Joktan Cohen (EWB- Netherlands) needed to cancel his trip and won’t be joining us. Avner joins Peter and Bernard for all of their meetings through Jan 8. Jan 2 – Meeting: Anat (AJEEC-NISPED), Akram (Green Land Society) in Beit Jalla. Akram described the status of the Education Center, and reiterated the need for additional funding. SIPP makes plans to visit the center on Jan 7. We learned about a US State Dept grant proposal that AJEEC was preparing that would include SIPP. We confirmed that we would connect Randy Martin to Akram. Randy, an air quality expert at Utah State Univ, will be a Fullbright Flex Fellow visiting Al Ajef Univ in Nablus in the spring to help establish an environmental program in the engineering department. There may be an opportunity for Randy to perform air quality monitoring at/near the metals processing sites near Hebron. This connection was then made subsequent to the meeting. Observations and Recommendations: - Follow-up with Randy and Akram to identify possible SIPP support. -

BROCK 475 FROM QATAR TO TOKYO, BY WAY OF MAR SABA: THE TRANSLATIONS OF ISAAC OF BETH QA™RAYE (ISAAC THE SYRIAN) SEBASTIAN BROCK One might well wonder what a seventh-century Syriac monastic writer, usu- ally known as Isaac of Niniveh, or Isaac the Syrian, has to do with a confer- ence on Cultural Interchange in the East of the Arabian Peninsula, but one of the very few details that are known of Isaac's life is the fact that he originated from Beth Qa†raye, the region of the west coast of the Gulf. This information is provided, not only by our two prime sources on Isaac's biography, the East Syriac monastic history (ktaba d-nakputa) by Isho{dnaÌ, and the Syrian Ortho- dox biographical note published by Rahmani, but also by two thirteenth-cen- tury manuscripts of Isaac's works which describe him as “the holy Mar Isaac Qa†raya, bishop of the town of Niniveh”.1 It is often forgotten that the west side of the Gulf was an important centre of Syriac Christianity in the seventh century, and Beth Qa†raye was the place of origin of a number of important Syriac writers of that time.2 By far the most famous of these is Isaac of Niniveh. Women Named Mary in the Meadow of John Moschus Ulla Tervahauta Introduction The various Marys of the New Testament lived on in early and medieval Chris- tian traditions. Apocryphal texts portray Mary of Magdala as a teacher of the disciples or investigate the early years of Mary, Mother of God. New Marys also emerge, such as Mary of Egypt, to this day a popular saint in eastern orthodox Christianity. There are other stories that portray Marys and provide entertain- ment with a moral teaching. In this article, I discuss several Marys who appear in John Moschus’s Meadow, a collection of monastic stories originating from the late sixth to the early seventh century. These figures show how biblical and other literature was applied and turned into popular forms in the sixth cen- tury and onwards by Moschus and others. As outsiders from the male monastic perspective, the portrayal of these women enable us to explore questions of identity, gender, and inclusivity/exclusivity. I will approach the reception of biblical traditions and views towards women through three stories featuring a woman who is at some point named Mary. There is a Mary who murders her own children: this Christian Medea does not avenge a treacherous husband, but resorts to extreme violence because the man she would marry refuses to have a woman with another man’s children. She is punished by divine judgement. Second, a story of a prostitute, in some manuscripts named Mary, repents and becomes a nun. Her story builds on gospel narratives of Jesus’s encounters with various women, including the woman who anoints him. -

THE MARVELOUS LIFE OF PATRIARCH SOPHRONIUS I His Company of Saints, and the Fall of Byzantine Jerusalem by Mother Nectaria McLees aint Sophronius of Jerusalem (c. 560-638, feast-day March 11) stands S among the most intriguing and attractive of Byzantine hierarchs, his eight decades encompassing a wealth of life experience as a highly-trained sophist, traveling ascetic pilgrim, esteemed church writer, and eventually patriarch. The monastic spiritual son and friend of two of the 6th-century’s great Christian luminaries, John Moschus (author of The Spiritual Mead- ow) and St. John the Almsgiver, Patriarch of Alexandria, St. Sophronius’ own spiritual son, St. Maximus the Confessor, would continue his life-long combat with heresy. An author of church services and hagiography, St. Sophronius is best-known as the author of the Life of St. Mary of Egypt, the only saint’s life read aloud as part of an official service in the yearly liturgical cycle of the Orthodox Church. This great hierarch ended his days as Patri- arch of the Holy City of Jerusalem, which, in the absence of higher political or military authority, he surrendered to Muslim conquerors in 638 to avert the destruction of the city and its population after a six-month siege. -

Apart from that, his name is fi rmly associated with the foundation of the eponymous city of Constantinople, which was to become a centre of the Eastern Christian civilization. A closer look at the contemporary sources, however, suggests that the fi rst Christian Emperor did not give the newly-founded city of Constantinople priority in his policies and building projects. During his reign, Constantine the Great dis- played extraordinary interest in Jerusalem, leaving Constantinople rather overshadowed. One may puzzle why Eusebius, who is the main contemporary source for the reign of Constantine the Great, gave but cursory treatment to the foundation and dedication of Constantinople while dwelling upon the subject of Palestinian church-building — and especially the foundation and dedication of the Holy Sepulchre church in Jerusalem1 — so exten- (1) The Holy Sepulchre is a later name for the complex erected by Con- stantine at the allegedly historical places of Golgotha and the tomb where Christ was buried. -

Beth Shean – Scythopolis: Churches and Monasteries on the Margins of the Holy Land
Beth Shean – Scythopolis: churches and monasteries on the margins of the Holy Land Matthew Chalmers, Religious Studies Introduction Scythopolis acted as the capital of Byzantine Palestina Secunda, reaching its zenith in the early sixth century CE.1 Despite this importance, it features in only three pilgrimage reports dated before its change of hands to Arabic control in the seventh century. Only one of those attaches a devotional narrative to visiting the settlement (Theodosius, De Situ Terrae Sanctae 2); otherwise Scythopolis acts as a stopping post on the way between more theologically charged zones (The Piacenza Pilgrim 8; Itinerarium Burdigalense). Similarly, whilst an administrative centre, none of the sites mentioned by the local monk-turned- biographer Cyril of Scythopolis as important for Christian networks of monasticism, ecclesiastical realpolitik, or narrating sacred space can be identified within the main urban centre. How does late antique Christianity in Palestine function here, with respect to churches and monasteries in particular? In this paper, I briefly discuss the known churches and monasteries, along with some of the previous scholarship dealing with them. Much of that work, however, relies on interpreting the material remains at Beth Shean by reference to a centralized Christianization hypothesis. In other words, it is assumed that as a city in Byzantine Palestine Beth Shean was also a site of top-down imperial investment intended to alter the religious landscape of Palestine through building projects and the sponsoring of pilgrimage.2 After discussing the role Beth Shean-Scythopolis’ marginality has to play in its religious life, I return to reassess the site, and present a picture of the functioning of Christian networks in Scythopolis-Beth Shean.
