Apart from that, his name is fi rmly associated with the foundation of the eponymous city of Constantinople, which was to become a centre of the Eastern Christian civilization. A closer look at the contemporary sources, however, suggests that the fi rst Christian Emperor did not give the newly-founded city of Constantinople priority in his policies and building projects. During his reign, Constantine the Great dis- played extraordinary interest in Jerusalem, leaving Constantinople rather overshadowed. One may puzzle why Eusebius, who is the main contemporary source for the reign of Constantine the Great, gave but cursory treatment to the foundation and dedication of Constantinople while dwelling upon the subject of Palestinian church-building — and especially the foundation and dedication of the Holy Sepulchre church in Jerusalem1 — so exten- (1) The Holy Sepulchre is a later name for the complex erected by Con- stantine at the allegedly historical places of Golgotha and the tomb where Christ was buried. -

Beth Shean – Scythopolis: churches and monasteries on the margins of the Holy Land Matthew Chalmers, Religious Studies Introduction Scythopolis acted as the capital of Byzantine Palestina Secunda, reaching its zenith in the early sixth century CE.1 Despite this importance, it features in only three pilgrimage reports dated before its change of hands to Arabic control in the seventh century. Only one of those attaches a devotional narrative to visiting the settlement (Theodosius, De Situ Terrae Sanctae 2); otherwise Scythopolis acts as a stopping post on the way between more theologically charged zones (The Piacenza Pilgrim 8; Itinerarium Burdigalense). Similarly, whilst an administrative centre, none of the sites mentioned by the local monk-turned- biographer Cyril of Scythopolis as important for Christian networks of monasticism, ecclesiastical realpolitik, or narrating sacred space can be identified within the main urban centre. How does late antique Christianity in Palestine function here, with respect to churches and monasteries in particular? In this paper, I briefly discuss the known churches and monasteries, along with some of the previous scholarship dealing with them. Much of that work, however, relies on interpreting the material remains at Beth Shean by reference to a centralized Christianization hypothesis. In other words, it is assumed that as a city in Byzantine Palestine Beth Shean was also a site of top-down imperial investment intended to alter the religious landscape of Palestine through building projects and the sponsoring of pilgrimage.2 After discussing the role Beth Shean-Scythopolis’ marginality has to play in its religious life, I return to reassess the site, and present a picture of the functioning of Christian networks in Scythopolis-Beth Shean. -

CHAPTER TWELVE THE MARTYRS OF CAESAREA: THE URBAN CONTEXT The archaeological excavations conducted in Caesarea over the last 30 years enable us to conceive better the Acts of the Martyrs of Caesarea in the urban context, and to examine several issues pertaining to the urban topography. Much of the new material so far has been published only in preliminary reports;1 several of the large urban complexes were excavated by more than a single expedition, and the interpretation and chronology of some structures are therefore debated issues. But in spite of these difficulties, pertaining to the availability and interpreta- tion of the archaeological data, there is room for the examination of the topographical details incorporated in these Acts in light of the new archaeological finds, even if not all may share my conclusions. The Acts of the Martyrs of Caesarea are given by Eusebius, the future bishop of the city, in his Ecclesiastical History (=HE) and in much more detail in the Martyrs of Palestine (=MP),2 recording “the persecution in his own days,” to which he was an eyewitness.3 The work has reached us in two recensions, of which only the shorter is extant in Greek. Constantelos N a critical note, Norman H. Baynes censured John B. Bury for I failing to make use of the Vita S. Danielis Stylitae in his History of the Later Roman Empire. 1 Baynes recognized the historical significance of the Vita, and accepted unreservedly its information about the life of Kyros Panopolites, Prefect of Constantinople under Theodosios II (408-450). Bury, on the other hand, did not overlook the importance of Kyros and devoted a few paragraphs to him. But, as Baynes rightly pointed out, Bury based his account on sources other than the Vita of St Danie1.2 Both accounts, however, as well as several references to Kyros by other scholars, are insufficient and contradictory.3 The present essay seeks to reconstruct the life of Kyros on the basis of all sources available, however fragmentary they may be. Kyros' career has many aspects of historical interest-political, intellectual, social and religious. He was, as we shall see, one of the most prominent civil servants in the first half of the fifth century. I On Kyros' early life we have little factual information. He was born at Panopolis in Byzantine Egypt, perhaps of Greek parents, as his profound attachment to Greek culture and his endeavours to pro mote it would seem to indicate. A GOLD FINGER RING AND THE EMPRESS EUDOCIA JANE C. BIERS ewelry that can be associated with an illustrious historical personage is rare; thus, a gold finger ring (Figs. 1 and 2) inscribed with the name of Aelia Eudocia, wife of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II, is of particular Jinterest. 1 Apart from its inscription, however, there is nothing remarkable about the ring itself, which has a thin, flat, bezel decorated with an incised, equal-armed cross once inlaid with niello, the black, silver/ copper sulphide popular with Byz antine gold- and silversmiths for decorating jew elry and plate.2 The niello has been partially and roughly removed from the cross, leaving an uneven border around the edge. The circular hoop is narrow and faceted on the exterior, and its two ends, covered by the bezel, have not been soldered together to form a complete ring; the ends are still visible beneath the bezel. The inscription on the 1. Finger ring with exterior of the hoop (Fig. 2) gives the name and title of the empress, AEL(IA) inscription of EVDOCIA A VG(VST A), each letter being incised in a single facet and with Empress Eudocia, some niello still remaining in the letters. A short Byzantine, gold, horizontal stroke separates and niello, the three words, and between the O and C of EVDOCIA there is a third Museum of Art horizontal stroke combined with a vertical one, perhaps intended to be a and Archaeology small cross. (77.239). The identification of the person named on the ring is not open to question. -
Palestinian Monasticism Is a Subject That Has Attracted Much Interest, Above All from Religious Historians, Archaeologists, and Textual Experts
Kathleen Hay Impact of St Sabas: The Legacy of PalestinianMonasticism Palestinian monasticism is a subject that has attracted much interest, above all from religious historians, archaeologists, and textual experts. 1 The centrality of Byzantine religion to any critical historiography of Byzantium has contributed to this interest, but another reason is the abundance of hagiographical documents, ecclesiastical records and the profusion of archaeological remains of the religious communities. My particular focus is the kernel of principle that exists, recognized or not, inside the attitudes, events, actions and policies of Byzantine society. Such an approach has led me inevitably to the phenomenon of power, which is to be found working in the foundations of every society in every age, and not least in monasticism. My report thus involves a preliminary demonstration and analysis of this characteristic. A variety of religious, social and economic reasons has been advanced for the almost simultaneous development of monasteries in the Roman Empire in the late third and fourth centuries. Scholars, however, are in agreement that unusual forces were in action in the Roman Empire in this period. The devotion to an apostolic Christian ideal and an imperative for personal holiness in late antiquity contributed to the upsurge of a powerful ascetic movement. This drove men and women to brave the elements and ferocious beasts of the deserts of Egypt, Syria, Cappadocia and Palestine in a search for spiritual perfection. It is the life and legacy of one such ascetic, Sabas, that I would like to examine, providing as it does a case study for the workings of power in monasticism. -
