(02) 9850 7561 Students who are offered a place in the MRes and who have nominated their Discipline as Ancient History should follow the following procedure: 1. Accept the offer of a place as per instructions in this enrolment pack, and nominate the units you will study in Year 1 on the Unit Selection Form. 2. Email a copy of this form to the Ancient History MRes Convenor, Malcolm Choat ([email protected]) 3. Arrange a time via email to meet Dr Choat on campus in January 7-11, 2013, to discuss your program and finalise it. 1. NOMINATION OF UNITS Students will nominate the 8 units they intend to take in the first year of their BPhil / MRes on the Unit Selection Form. NB: If you have asked for partial credit for previous studies or recognition of prior learning, only nominate those units in which you intend to enrol, noting the compulsory units listed below. BPhil / MRes students must take 8 seminars in their first year (4 in each session), as follows: (a) All MRes students must take the following units: MRES700 Research Communications (Session 1) FOAR700 Research Frontiers 1: Ancient History (Session 2). MICHAEL AND ATTIS Twenty years ago, when I was working on the apse mosaics of St. Sophia at Constantinople, I had ample opportunity to contemplate what is surely one of the most beautiful works of Byzantine art, I mean the image of the archangel Gabriel, who stands next to the enthroned Theotokos (Fig. 1). Gabriel is dressed in court costume; indeed, one can affirm that his costume is imperial, since he is wearing red buskins and holding a globe, the symbol of universal dominion. Yet neither the Bible nor orthodox doctrine as defined by the Fathers provides any justification for portraying an archangel in this guise; no matter how great was his dignity in heaven, he remained a minister and a messenger1. Only God could be described as the equivalent of the emperor. How was it then that Byzantine art, which showed extreme reluctance to give to Christ, the pambasileus, any visible attributes of royalty other than the throne, granted these very attributes to archangels, who had no claim to them? An enquiry I undertook at the time (and left unpublished) suggested the following conclusions: 1. The Byzantines themselves, I mean the medieval Byzantines, could offer no reasonable explanation of the iconography of archangels and seemed to be unaware of its meaning. On the subject of the globe I found only two texts. One was an unedited opuscule by Michael Psellos, who, quite absurdly, considered it to denote the angels' rapidity of movement; "for", he says, "the sphere is such an object that, touching as it does only a tiny portion of the ground, is able in less than an instant to travel in any direction"2. -

Cloth £48.00, $74.00 Reviewed by Lorenzo Perrone University of Bologna [email protected] The last two decades have seen a remarkable renewal of interest in Late Antique Gaza, which contrasts positively with the recurring tragedy and isolation of the Palestinian city nowadays. Several studies have addressed different aspects of Gazan religious and intellectual history from the fourth to the sixth century. In early Byzantine Palestine, a region that became more and more Christian despite its continuing multiethnic and multi-religious environment, Gaza remained a stronghold of paganism until at least the be- ginnings of the fifth century. Generally, research has not dealt at oncewith both the pagan and the Christian Gaza of Late Antiquity, thus suggesting the picture of two separate worlds: on the one hand, the ancient Hellenistic heritage of the rhetorical school of Gaza, which in conformity with the Sec- ond Sophistic was not devoid of philosophical concerns; on the other hand, the new tradition of Christian theology and especially of monasticism that flourished in the vicinity of the city during the fifth and sixth centuries. Even in recent research, we find few exceptions to the separate treatment of these topics. The essays collected by Brouria Bitton-Ashkelony and Aryeh Kofsky in their pathbreaking volume Christian Gaza in Late Antiquity [2004], as suggested by its title, mainly focus on the ecclesiastical and monastic life, al- though they include some contributions on pagan festivals, urban games, and spectacles, as well as on the literary activity of the sophists and their social sta- tus. -

In death, as in life, Justinian left a deep impression on those around him. The Latin court poet Corippus declared that ‘the awesome death of the man showed by clear signs that he had conquered the world. He alone, amidst universal lamentations, seemed to rejoice in his pious coun- tenance.’1 The memory of Justinian was to loom large in the minds of subsequent generations of emperors, just as the physical monuments built in Constantinople during his reign were long to dominate the medieval city.2 The emperor had reformed the civil law of the empire, overhauled its administrative structures, and restored imperial rule to Africa, Italy, and part of Spain; he had engaged in long drawn-out warfare with the prestige enemy of Sasanian Persia and attempted to restore peace to the increasingly fissile imperial Church. In short, through his military exertions, Justinian had done much to restore the Roman Empire to a position of military and ideological dominance in the lands bordering the central and western Mediterranean, whilst at home he had sought to bolster the legal, admin- istrative, and religious authority of the imperial office.3 This attempted restoration of imperial fortunes had been accompanied by a concerted effort to propagandise on behalf of the emperor and his policies. -

EARLY CHRISTIAN AND BYZANTINE Amulet: St. Symeon Stylites Byzantine, 12th c. CE Lead 64.76 Museum Purchase The lead amulet shows the bust of Saint Symeon emerging from the top of a column. An angel stands to left and right, one of them on a ladder. Below the angels appear the Saint’s mother and his disciple Conon. Saint Symeon was an ascetic who lived most of his life on the top of a column. After his death, the column on which he died was venerated and attracted pilgrims who came to be healed. Amulets like this one were considered to have healing properties and were made for the pilgrims who came to the sanctuary. An inscription around the edge of the amulet confirms its healing nature. It reads: “Blessed medallion of Saint Symeon Thaumatourgos (healer/performer of miracles). Praise god in his Saints. (a quote from Psalm 151) Amen.” This type of amulet, created to heal or prevent disease or illness, was very common. (MAA 11/07) Amulet: Holy Rider Byzantine, Palestine, 5th c. CE Bronze 70.99 Museum Purchase The bronze amulet is one of the most popular in Late Antiquity (5th to 7th centuries). On one side it shows a mounted warrior stabbing with his spear a fallen figure, an image which is found also in both pagan and Jewish art but is assimilated into Christian beliefs. Amulets like this one were worn as a general protection against evil. A Greek inscription above reads: “One God conquering Evil.” On the other side is the figure of Christ Crucified. -

The Development of Early Imperial Dress from the Tetrarchs to the Herakleian Dynasty General Introduction The emperor, as head of state, was the most important and powerful individual in the land; his official portraits and to a lesser extent those of the empress were depicted throughout the realm. His image occurred most frequently on small items issued by government officials such as coins, market weights, seals, imperial standards, medallions displayed beside new consuls, and even on the inkwells of public officials. As a sign of their loyalty, his portrait sometimes appeared on the patches sown on his supporters’ garments, embossed on their shields and armour or even embellishing their jewelry. Among more expensive forms of art, the emperor’s portrait appeared in illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, and wall paintings such as murals and donor portraits. Several types of statues bore his likeness, including those worshiped as part of the imperial cult, examples erected by public 1 officials, and individual or family groupings placed in buildings, gardens and even harbours at the emperor’s personal expense. -

EARLY CHRISTIAN AND BYZANTINE There is no simple term which adequately covers the period of artistic development from about third to the seventh centuries in western art, the transitional period between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. It is an era which seems to confront us with an abrupt and seemingly erratic succession of diverse styles. What unites these styles, however, is the rise in importance of specifically Christian imagery. Christian art forms and liturgical practices took shape in both eastern and western parts of Europe and the crumbling Roman Empire. The Roman Emperor Constantine was the first to legalize Christianity. He had made Constantinople, at the ancient site of Byzantium on the Black Sea, the capital of the East Roman Empire around 325 A.D. In both east and west, art became subject to a kind of "denaturing" process, produced in part by the otherworldly outlook of Christianity. Gradually, the naturalistic Classical tradition was replaced by an art intended to convey ideas about God and the afterlife, rather than to reproduce the appearances of this world. In Italy and the west, "barbarians" (the Goths, Ostrogoths, Lombards and others) and their pagan motifs influenced the depiction of Christian themes. In the Byzantine east, art influenced by Greek and Syrian forms became an integral part of the liturgy--the rituals of the church service--and changed very little over the centuries, even surviving the threat of the Iconoclastic Controversy from 730-843 A.D. (the iconoclasts wished to destroy all religious images because they believed they impeded true spiritual understanding). Icons, meaning simply images, date to about the sixth century, and demonstrate the conservative, formal elements of the Byzantine style (see the 17th century Russian Icon). -
