19 Bacton, Cotton, Wyverstone Yearbook 2014 Cotton & District Village Produce Association (VPA) The club where gardening is fun! New Members Welcome. This is a social club with an emphasis on gardening and associated topics. We meet at Cotton Village Hall 7.30pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. There are no meetings in January, August or September. The annual Show is held on the first Saturday in September. For details contact Jane de Beer email: [email protected] Tel: 01449 781594 ...... The members of Stowmarket and District Lions Club are proud to be a part of the world's largest service organisation. Lions Clubs International was formed in the United States in 1917. The organisation reached the in 1950 and sustained growth now sees 1,350,000 Lions Club members active in 45,000 clubs in no fewer than 206 countries. All clubs throughout the world share the same ethic as in our motto - 'We Serve'. Our work is to help those less fortunate than ourselves with financial and practical help. This takes many forms beyond the simple raising of money and writing of cheques. The Stowmarket club has a strength of 47 members, making it the 9th largest club in the UK and Ireland, no mean achievement for an area of such modest population density, and we now have a Sister Club club of 20 members in Bury St Edmunds. Last year in Stowmarket we raised over £50,000 for our charity and activity accounts as well as offering practical help where it's needed. We have many regular activities that have become well known locally. These include the Sportsman's Dinner, Boxing night, Santa's sleigh and, our rapidly growing bike ride through Suffolk's beautiful villages. We all meet together once a month for a business meeting to organise our work. In addition, there are always others of us meeting in small groups in between to work on particular matters. The organisation and execution of these charitable events is evenly matched by a lively social calendar which sees at least one event each month. These enable the club to go to places and experience things that are very difficult to achieve as individuals or pairs. No fewer than nine of our number have been members of the club since the very beginning such is the strength of the fellowship that has developed. If you would like to know more about Lions Club International or think that you have anything to offer the club then please visit our website www.stowlions.org.uk or contact Peter Smith on 01449 780149 If you require our assistance or want us to help someone please email Geoff Lowndes-Toole our community services chairman [email protected]

Bacton & District W.I. meet in Bacton village hall, usually on the first Monday of the month, and we welcome any visitors who might want to come along and see what we are about for only £3 per meeting up to a maximum of 3 meetings. There is always a talk or demonstration organised for us by our Programme Committee who try to make the calendar varied and interesting. In 2014 we have planned talks on Prisons, Self Defence and Ballroom Dancing amongst other things. At all our meetings delicious refreshments are provided by our members and there is ample opportunity to chat while we have our tea. Outings are organised during the year and regular updates on our activities appear monthly in the Parish and Community News. There are opportunities for all members to attend conferences, courses and social occasions and we try to be involved in village events as well as organising some ourselves. The W.I. has it’s own adult education college, Denman College in Oxfordshire, and we have a Bursary scheme which enables one member each year to attend a course of their choice. TOWN PASTORS : Christian volunteers from various churches in Stowmarket and surrounding villages, patrol the streets of the town on Friday nights, with backup from their Base Prayer and Home Prayer teams. It is our aim to bring care and assistance to people who find themselves vulnerable through drink or drugs or who just need a listening ear, a word of encouragement or someone to arrange a lift home. The scheme has been running for 4 years this December and has gone from strength to strength, including a presence at ‘Latitude’. We are seeking to expand this ministry but need more volunteers - as Pastors, Base Pray-ers or Home Pray-ers. Welcome to the Mid Suffolk Central Safer Neighbourhood Team.

In Suffolk, Safer Neighbourhood Teams are made up of Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Specials and Police Support Volunteers. We are here to help you, so please get in touch with us if you need our assistance. Speed or Safety, Slow Down for Life The Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative allows members of the community to address the issue of speeding by becoming actively involved in road safety by monitoring speeds at safe locations with speed detection equipment. The aim of the CSW initiative is to address the problem of speeding through a partnership of the police the local com- munity, parish councils and other partners. The aim of the initiative is NOT to catch as many speeding drivers as possible but:- to reduce speed in areas of concern; to make drivers aware that excessive speed is socially unacceptable; to re-educate drivers about the dangers of speeding; and to address concerns from local residents about cars speeding through their neighbourhoods. Where CSW has been implemented we can show a reduction in overall average speeds, and a significant reduction in drivers travelling well above the speed limit. If you are interested in starting up such a scheme then please contact a member of your Safer Neighbourhood Team for further details.

London 2012 brought many talented people to Britain. But did you know this happens every year? Thousands of bright young men and women come to study at our universities. Sadly, most have no contact with British people outside the campus. Some miss their families; many are curious about the real life of Britain. That’s why HOST arranges for them to spend a day, weekend or 3 days at Christmas as guests in hospitable homes. This is a great opportunity to get to know someone from another country, and help them to feel welcome. As a volunteer host, you could enjoy introducing a student of your choice to your way of life and perhaps to their very first Christmas.

Locally grown pork and lamb, jams and chutneys and organically produced eggs are always available, as well as seasonal vegetables and fruit grown in the village. Run by Liz and Andy Mellen, the aim of this initiative is to shorten the distance our food travels from field to fork, helping to make food production more sustainable.
