  • Sir John Northcott
    30 Sir John Northcott (1 August 1946 – 31 July 1957) Chris Cunneen The 30th representative of the Crown in New South Wales, John North- cott, was the first Australian to be State or colonial Governor.1 It was only after extraordinary pressure from the Premier William McKell that King George VI, advised by the British Government, agreed to the selection. Birth and military career John Northcott was born on 24 March 1890 at Creswick, Victoria, eldest son of English-born parents: his father, also named John, owned a general store in the nearby town of Dean, his mother was Elizabeth, née Reynolds. Young John was the eldest of four sons and one daughter. Educated at Dean State School and Grenville College, Ballarat, he was a keen member of the school cadets. He was also an enthusiastic horse rider, so in 1908 he enlisted in the Ninth Light Horse Regiment, a militia unit. Deciding on a full time career in the Army he passed the entry examinations and in 1912 joined the Permanent Military Forces as a Lieu- tenant on the Administrative and Instructional Staff. He was posted to Tasmania. On the outbreak of World War I he transferred to the Aust- ralian Imperial Force and in August 1914 was appointed Adjutant of the 12th Battalion, based at Anglesea Barracks, Hobart.2 Northcott’s service record at this time described the 24 year old as five feet eight and a half inches tall, with a fair complexion and blue eyes. His Battalion left for Egypt in October 1914. On Sunday, 25 April 1915, Northcott was one of the first to land at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli.

Mutual Community Challenge The Paris to Dakar car rallies of the past created the legend … but as real people 5 Tour 2010 donʼt need engines, cycling is the best way to live the legend. So . whoʼs idea was this? 7 It is the flagship ride of the Dutch company Bike Dreams and after doing their La Inaugural Semaine Federale (in bella Italia tour in 2008, I wasted no time in signing up for the ride of a lifetime. 9 Australia) The tour took 10 weeks, leaving Paris from the Eiffel Tower in early September and Operation Recover Trek 9 arriving at the resort at Lac Rose, Senegal in mid November. The trip is broken into BraveHeart and Wuss-in-Boots 59 stages with 11 rest days, travelling an average of 120 kms per day. The cost 10 discover teamwork included all accommodation (camping plus a couple of hotels), all food and drinks on cycling days and full support, including a nurse and bike mechanic.     Castlemaine and Maldon Railway Members Preservation Society Newsletter December 2008 Members Christmas Party - A Fantastic Evening With Our Friends From Daylesford Inside this issue: Approximately 60 of our good friends from the Daylesford Spa Country Railway joined approximately 50 VGR members for an enjoyable evening on the 22nd of November for our annual Christmas Party. The day VGR Christmas Party 1 started at Maldon with a run behind J541 to Muckleford where we collected some of our friends from Daylesford who chose to join VicLink Signage 1 the train there. We then continued on Castlemaine to pick up our Castlemaine- based members. After that we enjoyed a Vice-Presidents Column 2 spirited run back to Maldon where we were able to enjoy some drinks and nibbles - 2007 - The Victorian unfortunately we were also joined by a blast 3 of winter weather with constant rain and a Year In Steam cold wind as well.
