August 2015 15 Duck Dynasty’s Sadie Robertson Lives Original True to the creative and entrepreneurial spirit that makes the Duck Dynasty family the inspiration it is today, Sadie Robertson has become an example of faith, modesty and hard work to young girls nation- wide. The daughter of Korie and Willie Robertson, at 17 years old she is already a motivational speaker, an author and a businesswoman. In the last two years she has collaborated with fashion designer Sherri Hill on a line of dresses and competed on Season 19 of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars. Her book, Live Original: How the Duck Commander Teen Keeps It Real and Stays True to Her Values, details the principles that lead her to think happy, be happy and dream big. And this month she launches a line of inspirational greeting cards and back-to-school products to make sharing faith easy in the classroom.

Best known for her tagline “Live Original,” Robertson says to live original simply means being who God called you to be with confidence. “When I was little I would actually preach to my parents on the way home, or I would stand up on the table and I’d just start preaching. My dad nicknamed me The Original because not many kids do that,” she says. “So once Duck Dynasty started and my career took off, I decided “Live Original” was going to be my message that I shared with everyone.”

Spending most of her summers busy with Christian camps and mission trips to the Dominican Republic, Robertson says it is easy to identify as a Christian but not always easy to live out the faith. “Something about being a Christian is you never stop learning and you never stop growing. It’s a continual thing. You take two steps forward and one step back some- times, and that’s just how the Christian walk goes,” she says. “Recently in my life I’ve been learning that the more you talk to God and the more you allow God in, the more it’s going to come out.”

Now a senior in high school, Robertson has transitioned into her school’s homeschool program to accommodate her Robertson’s travel schedule as a motivational Christian speaker. She says in her younger years, having confidence at school was book Live Original recently released in paperback. Read about it in Best Books difficult. While she could be herself among family and close friends, at school she kept quiet. Three years ago she page 14. looked to Scripture to try and kick her anxiety, and the answer came in time. “I had this girl who kind of bullied me, and it made me really discouraged. So I wrote this verse on my dry erase board in my room on January 12, 2012, and it is still there today. It is Hebrews 10:35, and it says ‘so then do not lose your confident trust in the Lord, for it will be richly rewarded.’ I read that verse every day… and nothing happened. Until about six months of reading it, when I actually said, ‘What does this mean and how can I put this into my life?’ Whenever I applied it to my life and realized it’s not about being confident in yourself—it’s about being confident in who God made you to be—that’s when it all turned around.”

Hoping to make the transition back to school easier for teenagers like herself, Robertson has teamed up with DaySpring to release her own line of greeting cards and school supplies with an inspirational mes- When it comes to mentors, Robertson says her mother, sage. A tennis player and a javelin thrower, Robertson says sports have played a big role in prepping her for the busy, often public, life she lives today. Joking that she tries to live a Hannah Montana lifestyle, spending half her time in school and half her time “doing crazy things,” she says learning to take criticism as an athlete was an important part of

As she finishes up her high school career and looks to the future for more opportunities as a speaker and entre- preneur, Robertson says there are two key ways kids and teens can follow her lead and Live Original this fall. “Number one, just because the crowd isn’t doing it, does not mean it isn’t cool. The crowd may be doing one thing or saying one thing, but it doesn’t make you weird to do something else. That just makes you original. You can be you.” Secondly, expect trials. Because living original can be hard. “Even if you are doing what’s right, there are going to be days where you don’t want to do it because nobody else is doing it. But trust God because in the long Robertson’s inspirational line of greeting cards are available at Sanctuary Christian run it’s definitely going to be worth it.” Books and Gifts in Alabaster and LifeWay — Camille Smith Platt Christian Stores. Another dangerous doctrine, repeated in Jurassic World, insists that this evolutionary process unfolded naturally over millions of years. Where are millions of years in the Bible? In Mark 10:6, Jesus said that God made the first married couple “from the beginning of the creation,” not billions of years after creation. Solid—or should I say squishy—scientific find- ings refute this common concept, too. Researchers keep finding original proteins and even intact tissues inside dinosaur fossils claimed to be over 65 million years old. They found more just last month. DNA remnants inside dinosaur cells make the third finding. Archaeologists have shown that neither proteins nor DNA should last even one million years. In my recently published research, I show the last finding—plenty of short-lived car- bon-14 in dinosaur fossils.

In the movie, younger brother Gray Mitchell explains how iron kept dinosaur proteins from decaying. This does refer to published speculation that iron and a chemical called hydroxyl might help preserve proteins, but many experiments show these chemicals actually destroy

ENCOURAGING WORD The Cost & ROI of Discipleship In Matthew 16:24, Jesus describes the cost and commitment required to be a disciple (student, follower) of Christ. “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’” To the believer, salvation is free (Eph 2:8-9), but discipleship is costly. Jesus explains that discipleship requires three things: being selfless, suffering, and being submissive.

1. We are no longer to be self-serving but serving others. It is no longer about self- gratification, but about pleasing God. We should say no to the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes (greed) and pride of life (I John 2:16).

2. As Christians, suffering shouldn’t surprise us; it should be expected. In John 16:33, Jesus tells us that in this world we will have troubles.

3. When Jesus called His first disciples, His instruction was to “follow Him.” Matthew 4:19-20 says, “’Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.” This implies being submissive; yielding to the power or authority of another. We must surrender our will to God’s will for us. Jesus prayed to the Father in Luke 22:42, “. . . yet not my will, but yours be done.”

Be encouraged! Christian discipleship demands an investment of ourselves; but the return on investment (ROI) far outweighs the cost required! He has prepared a place for us! (John 14:2-3) —Tony Cooper Beginning his 25th Year of Service as Exec. Dir., Jimmie Hale Mission www.jimmiehalemission.com
