Research for the project was facilitated by several funding sources. Introduction Introduction Railway workers (in French ‘cheminots’) were the earliest, and among the most enduring, bastions of communist support in twentieth-century France. From the earliest days of its existence, railway workers provided the French Communist Party (PCF) with some of its most high-profile national leaders, together with a legion of highly active party militants spread widely through urban and rural France. Dispersed cheminot cells maintained a communist presence in some of the deepest regions of rural France, while massive concentrations of railwaymen and women in urban centres such as Villeneuve-Saint-Georges and Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (Tours) nurtured a rich and powerful working-class communist culture. Most significantly, railway workers voted en masse for communist ‘shop stewards’ in the workplace and joined the communist-led trade union Federation in large numbers, consistently making it the largest of the trade union organisations on the railways between the two world wars. The relationship between railway workers and the Communist Party was at the heart of the growth of a distinctly ‘French’ communist political culture, yet it is a history which in large part has yet to be told.

More specifically, I will be focusing on what caused their split on the French issue. I argue that the main source of conflict between the two men was ideological differences on parties in contemporary American politics. While Adams believed that there were two parties in America and his job was to remain independent of both, Hamilton saw only one party (the Republicans), and believed that it was the goal of all “real” Americans to do whatever was needed to defeat that faction. This ideological difference between the two men resulted in their personal disdain for one another and eventually their split on the French issue. Introduction National politics in the early American republic was a very uncertain venture. The founding fathers had no historical precedents to rely upon. The kind of government created in the American constitution had never been attempted in the Western World; it was a piecemeal system designed in many ways more to gain individual state approval than for practical implementation. Furthermore, while the fathers knew they wanted opposition within their political system, they rejected political parties as evil and dangerous to the public good. This tension between the belief in opposition and the rejection of party sentiment led to confusion and high tensions during the early American republic.

Dans cet esprit, il lance en 1898 dans la Gazette de France l’idée du « faux patriotique Henry ». C’est son grand mot d’ordre, « le Politique d’abord ». Le but de Maurras est d’ériger un système positif et machiavélien, partant du « postulat nationaliste », contre la décadence ayant suivi la défaite de 1870, et plus avant encore la Révolution française, mère d’une société corrompue où manque le principe unitaire monarchique. Pour Maurras, quatre « états confédérés » composent l’Anti-France et ont donné lieu à la démocratie parlementaire : ce sont les Juifs, les francs-maçons, les protestants et les métèques (étrangers), qui tous font passer leurs solidarités propres avant la Nation.

This thesis analyzes the conception of space developed in Cabet’s book, and tracks the group’s actual spatial practice over the next seventeen years. Re-evaluating Syndicalist Opposition to the First World War Abstract It has been argued that support for the First World War by the important French syndicalist organisation, the Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT) has tended to obscure the fact that other national syndicalist organisations remained faithful to their professed workers’ internationalism: on this basis syndicalists beyond France, more than any other ideological persuasion within the organised trade union movement in immediate pre-war and wartime Europe, can be seen to have constituted an authentic movement of opposition to the war in their refusal to subordinate class interests to those of the state, to endorse policies of ‘defencism’ of the ‘national interest’ and to abandon the rhetoric of class conflict. This article, which attempts to contribute to a much neglected comparative historiography of the international syndicalist movement, re-evaluates the syndicalist response across a broad geographical field of canvas (embracing France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Britain and America) to reveal a rather more nuanced, ambiguous and uneven picture.

One of the main components (topoi) of the politics of the French nationalists since the late 19th century has been the rhetoric against the existing ”system,” that is the discourse against the representative form of democracy, the parliamentary form of government and the political establishment. This study focuses on the nationalist anti-system rhetoric at the turn of the 20th and the turn of the 21st centuries, namely on Boulangism (1886-1889) and its representative Maurice Barrès (1862- 1923), the nationalist Charles Maurras (1868-1952), and the contemporary radical right movement, the Front National (1972-). This study aims to carry out a detailed and politically oriented exploration of the changes that can be detected in this rejection from the time of Boulanger to that of the Front National. In 1963 the first anti-revisionists Marxist-Leninist organisations arose, and after that, various others developed either through subsequent splits or by indirect or direct routes, not least the student movement and catholic circles influenced by Marxism. Like elsewhere in Europe, inspired by the Sino-Soviet Polemic and later the Cultural Revolution, there was an organisational rupture, a separation from the revisionist party, but how much of a political, ideological and organisational rupture was there? The proliferation of small militants groups1, and an inability to rally a stable recognised leadership that could command allegiance amongst the various trends saw unresolved ideological concerns engendered criticism and splits that were never resolved in any organisation that could act as, rather than proclaim itself, the successor of the PCE. Spanish anti-revisionists operated under a repressive authoritarian regime headed by Franco whose military coup had overthrown the Spanish republic. It was a heroic struggle in a regime noted for its anti-communist repression and police killing demonstrating workers in the streets, generating an armed response of differing intensity and effectiveness.
