The campaign is being supported with 250.000 USD from The Branding Denmark Fund, and has a total budget of 500.000 USD, and will run until 2011. Copenhagen Jazz Festival has launched the targeted campaign in selected jazz markets in Europe and the US. It is a unique opportunity to strengthen and develop the marketing of the festival in Germany, England and the United States. Under the name “ Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience ”, we have entered into a partnership with three international jazz festivals and festival producers, namely Rochester International Jazz Festival, JazzFest Berlin and London Jazz Festival. Here we will be showcasing a number of Danish groups, each of which represent the very best of the contemporary Danish jazz scene and give a taste of what Copenhagen Jazz Festival is capable of offering its audiences. The first stop is the US, at Rochester International Jazz Festival, where Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience is presenting some of Denmark’s current, top jazz names - Palle Mikkelborg/Marilyn Mazur/ Helen Davies/Mikkel Nordsoe, Ibrahim Electric and Little Red Suitcase It is a great pleasure for us to collaborate with the festival in Rochester and with John Nugent who for a long time has been presenting Nordic jazz at the festival. About Copenhagen Jazz Festival With a hundred venues and close to a thousand concerts in the course of ten days in July, Copenhagen Jazz Festival transforms the Danish capital into a European jazz capital. Now Americans are going to have their own chance to check out the festival when it goes “on tour” in the United States with a selection of the best of the Danish jazz scene. Copenhagen Jazz Festival is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, attracting trades people, jazz enthusiasts and culture-minded folks in general. With over 240,000 guests per year, the festival is also a considerable tourist attraction. “People come not only for the memorable musical experiences, but also to enjoy the very special atmosphere that takes over when jazz literally invades Copenhagen,” says festival leader (director) Signe Lopdrup. The many free, outdoor concerts around town are one of the festival’s special features and help make Copenhagen Jazz Festival the city’s most important public festival. In addition, the festival has made the presentation of jazz in unique surroundings its trademark. Thus the public is able to enjoy concerts in the city’s best concert halls, on an old, East-German trawler, in a disused printing plant and Carlsberg Brewery’s venerable, stately gardens. So Copenhagen Jazz Festival also provides an excellent occasion for experiencing the city itself - from its best side. ”The musical program for 2010 includes world-famous stars like Herbie Hancock, Caetano Veloso and Diana Krall and a long list of other well-known’s. But it’s very important for us to make a program that reflects the newest trends both in European jazz and in the rest of the world,” emphasizes Signe Lopdrup, who considers strengthening and developing jazz’ image in general – and Danish jazz in particular – as part of the festival’s task. It is no coincidence that these four Danish musicians are going to represent the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in the international marketing project Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience. Each of them represents some of the best and ultimate in Danish music to day. None of them are jazz musician in the traditional sense, despite their use of freedom and improvisation - but together they invite the listener into a spiritual and beautiful world of soundscapes. Trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg celebrated his first 50 years in music in 2009. 25 years ago, Palle Mikkelborg and Miles Davis proved to be a great inspiration for each other, the outcome of which was Aura – a work that long since has been canonized and awarded with a Grammy. Palle Mikkelborg: "My personal sound and my ideas for concerts are naturally inspired by my deep interest in spiritual matters. I have never had a musical ambition in my life, only a spiritual one. My life-long journey in music and it's magic has only ever had one aim: to find peace in mind". As a composer Mikkelborg interest in the suite form has triggered a series of works with jazz and symphonic orchestra characterized crew and unorthodox use of jazz soloists, strings and woodwinds. Mikkelborg has toured in Europe and Japan time and again - and has recorded with Gil Evans Big Band, George Russell Big Band, Terje Rypdal, Jan Garbarek, Gary Peacock, Dinu Saluzzi and many others. In other words, Mikkelborg is one of Denmark’s most valued musicians – and a national treasure. Marilyn Mazur is best known today as the flamboyant percussionist at the heart of the Jan Garbarek Group, speeding around an ever burgeoning array of multi-ethnic metal, wood and clay instruments. The Danish percussionist spent 14 years on the road with the Jan Garbarek Group, appearing on albums including “I Took Up The Runes”, “Twelve Moons”, “Visible Worlds” and “Rites”. Garbarek describes her as an elemental force, like the wind. Prior employers Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, and Miles Davis have similarly valued her pervasive, penetrating percussion. Mazur also happens to be a very strong band leader and composer, which can be heard on the ECM-album "Small Labyrinths" which features her old band “Future Song”. In this new lineup will Mazurs amazing abilities as the listening drummer can be freely unfold. She cannot ask for better co-players and musical challengers. The quartet is completed with harpist Helen Davies and guitarist Mikkel Nordsoe – both longtime and highly respected musicians and strong contributors to the Danish music scene. Helen Davies’ main work is in the field of folk and improvised music, blending acoustic and electronic sounds. Together with Palle Mikkelborg, she has appeared together throughout Scandinavia, Australia, the Far East and China. She has also worked and recorded with several of Ireland´s leading traditional musicians, most recently with singer Padraigín ní Uallachaín in programmes that reflect the spirituality of much of the Irish song tradition. Guitarist Mikkel Nordsoe has been a massive force in the Danish rock and fusion scene since the early 1970s, and his excellent musicianship and pleasant mind has made him one of the most wanted guitarists on the scene. Nordsoe has a unique ability to move easily between genres, and his own projects always reflects this in the best way possible ■ Koncerts: Rochester/ Lutheran Church / June 17 / 7.30pm & 9.30pm More info: www.mikkelborg.dk Little Red Suitcase Live at Hamilton Gallery, WA, June 16 + Rochester Jazz Festival, June 18 + Cornelia, NY, June 19 Little Red Suitcase delicately mixes improvised music, cabaret and theatre live on stage.

Mike Mantler and Carla Bley, being the only two non-leader members of the Guild, had decided to organize an orchestra made up of musicians both inside and outside the Guild. This group, then known as the Jazz Composer's Guild Orchestra and consisting of eleven musicians, began rehearsals in the downtown loft of painter Mike Snow for its premiere performance at the Guild's Judson Hall series of concerts in December 1964. The orchestra, set up in a large circle in the center of the hall, played "Communications no.3" by Mike Mantler and "Roast" by Carla Bley. The concert was so successful musically that the leaders decided to continue to write for the group and to give performances at the Guild's new headquarters, a triangular studio on top of the Village Vanguard, called the Contemporary Center. In early March 1965 at the first of these concerts, which were presented in a workshop style, the group had been enlarged to fifteen musicians and the pieces played were "Radio" by Carla Bley and "Communications no.4" (subtitled "Day") by Mike Mantler.

  • Temporal Disunity and Structural Unity in the Music of John Coltrane 1965-67
Listening in Double Time: Temporal Disunity and Structural Unity in the Music of John Coltrane 1965-67 Marc Howard Medwin A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: David Garcia Allen Anderson Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer Stefan Litwin ©2008 Marc Howard Medwin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MARC MEDWIN: Listening in Double Time: Temporal Disunity and Structural Unity in the Music of John Coltrane 1965-67 (Under the direction of David F. Garcia). The music of John Coltrane’s last group—his 1965-67 quintet—has been misrepresented, ignored and reviled by critics, scholars and fans, primarily because it is a music built on a fundamental and very audible disunity that renders a new kind of structural unity. Many of those who study Coltrane’s music have thus far attempted to approach all elements in his last works comparatively, using harmonic and melodic models as is customary regarding more conventional jazz structures. This approach is incomplete and misleading, given the music’s conceptual underpinnings. The present study is meant to provide an analytical model with which listeners and scholars might come to terms with this music’s more radical elements. I use Coltrane’s own observations concerning his final music, Jonathan Kramer’s temporal perception theory, and Evan Parker’s perspectives on atomism and laminarity in mid 1960s British improvised music to analyze and contextualize the symbiotically related temporal disunity and resultant structural unity that typify Coltrane’s 1965-67 works.

  • Fru Skagerrak
FRU SKAGERRAK www.fruskagerrak.com The music of Fru Skagerrak takes you on a journey through Scandinavia; from lowlands to mountains, from slow airs to lively polkas, in major and in minor, and everything in between. Fru Skagerrak- ”Lady Skagerrak” - are three master musicians - one from each Scandinavian country: Maja Kjær Jacobsen from Denmark, Elise Wessel Hildrum from Norway and Anna Lindblad from Sweden. In 2011, these three globetrotting musicians met for the first time at Tønder Festival, Denmark’s biggest Folk Festival, in a roaring session that had engulfed the backstage bar. Through the mayhem of tunes you could feel a certain Scandinavian groove, and in that moment the connection between these three fiddlers was clear. After meeting at Tønder Festival for three consecutive years, Fru Skagerrak finally saw the light of day in August 2014. The trio brings together the diverse traditions from each of their homelands, which surround the Skagerrak strait. Through a repertoire of traditional tunes, new compositions, and songs in their respective languages, they express their kinship and love of their shared heritage. The result is an explosion of the sounds that exist in Scandinavian music today. The self-titled debut album was released in May 2016 and their second album “Ankerdram” was released in April 2018. What the press says about Fru Skagerrak’s albums: "The album brims over with confidence and bravura, and the material and performances to match. There's astonishing power and fire in the unison playing, and even the oddities come out grinning. A definite triumph" - fRoots (UK) Contact: Fru Skagerrak – www.fruskagerrak.com – [email protected] - T: +45 2537 1544 p.

  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.
