Mike Mantler and Carla Bley, being the only two non-leader members of the Guild, had decided to organize an orchestra made up of musicians both inside and outside the Guild. This group, then known as the Jazz Composer's Guild Orchestra and consisting of eleven musicians, began rehearsals in the downtown loft of painter Mike Snow for its premiere performance at the Guild's Judson Hall series of concerts in December 1964. The orchestra, set up in a large circle in the center of the hall, played "Communications no.3" by Mike Mantler and "Roast" by Carla Bley. The concert was so successful musically that the leaders decided to continue to write for the group and to give performances at the Guild's new headquarters, a triangular studio on top of the Village Vanguard, called the Contemporary Center. In early March 1965 at the first of these concerts, which were presented in a workshop style, the group had been enlarged to fifteen musicians and the pieces played were "Radio" by Carla Bley and "Communications no.4" (subtitled "Day") by Mike Mantler.

  • Nielsen Music Year-End Report Canada 2016
NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report for Canada, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

  • Fru Skagerrak
FRU SKAGERRAK www.fruskagerrak.com The music of Fru Skagerrak takes you on a journey through Scandinavia; from lowlands to mountains, from slow airs to lively polkas, in major and in minor, and everything in between. Fru Skagerrak- ”Lady Skagerrak” - are three master musicians - one from each Scandinavian country: Maja Kjær Jacobsen from Denmark, Elise Wessel Hildrum from Norway and Anna Lindblad from Sweden. In 2011, these three globetrotting musicians met for the first time at Tønder Festival, Denmark’s biggest Folk Festival, in a roaring session that had engulfed the backstage bar. Through the mayhem of tunes you could feel a certain Scandinavian groove, and in that moment the connection between these three fiddlers was clear. After meeting at Tønder Festival for three consecutive years, Fru Skagerrak finally saw the light of day in August 2014. The trio brings together the diverse traditions from each of their homelands, which surround the Skagerrak strait. Through a repertoire of traditional tunes, new compositions, and songs in their respective languages, they express their kinship and love of their shared heritage. The result is an explosion of the sounds that exist in Scandinavian music today. The self-titled debut album was released in May 2016 and their second album “Ankerdram” was released in April 2018. What the press says about Fru Skagerrak’s albums: "The album brims over with confidence and bravura, and the material and performances to match. There's astonishing power and fire in the unison playing, and even the oddities come out grinning. A definite triumph" - fRoots (UK) Contact: Fru Skagerrak – www.fruskagerrak.com – [email protected] - T: +45 2537 1544 p.

  • 5.Fall from Grace 6.Fear 7.Into My Brain 8.Monster 9.Utopia Calling 10
THE VISION ABLAZE Premiere New Video “Absent” Danish progressive metal quartet The Vision Ablaze have premiered a new video single for the song “Absent,” which opens their most recent album Youtopia. See it below. The album was released in September last year via Mighty Music, and was produced by Jacob Hansen (Aborted, Mercenary, Volbeat, Pretty Maids). About the story behind the track and how it complements the rest of the material on Youtopia, the band commented: “‘Absent’ is the first song on our album and it embodies many of the themes on the album; seeking truth, shattering illusions, questioning authorities and waking up. ‘Absent’ is the story of someone who must transcend the human illusion and save himself and humanity from the restraint of lies and deceit.” For the rest of the year The Vision Ablaze has planned tours in Demark, Sweden and Germany. Talking more about their plans, they said: “We've recently switched to wireless in-ears and it's the first step in making a smother live show. It enables us to control many important variables in our setup. We're also planning a video for 'Monster' too - which will be the 6th video for the album.” Youtopia won “Best Production” at the High Voltage Rock Awards 2016 in Copenhagen. It's the most prestigious award show for rock and metal in Denmark. The award cited producer Jacob Hansen's outstanding work — making a dynamic album that's both really crushing and very soft and clean at the same time. The award was given by renowned producer Flemming Rasmussen and he praised the album for the pristine production.

  • Diplo and Beck Confirmed for Northside
Diplo 2017-12-01 09:59 CET Diplo and Beck confirmed for NorthSide Thundercat, Rhye, and Jimmy Eat World will also appear at next year's festival This year’s last round of announcements for NorthSide 2018 will significantly expand the festival’s musical spectrum and offer everything from baile funk and sophisticated electronica to fusion jazz and postmodern disco-funk. Over the last three years, Diplo has been unavoidable because of global megahits like “Lean On”, "Where Are Ü Now", and “Cold Water”. He has found chart success as a producer for M.I.A., Sia, and Beyoncé, as a member of Major Lazer and Jack Ü and as solo artist, and he is always highly ranked on DJ Mag's list of the world’s best dj’s. The productive producer’s unique take on baile funk has made its mark on charts throughout the world since the breakthrough with "Paper Planes", and as he himself put it a few years ago; Random White Dude Be Everywhere. This summer that will for the first time also include NorthSide. Diplo will play Saturday June 9th at NorthSide 2018 Earlier this year, the always unpredictable Beck released the album "Colors", which picked up the thread from the dance-friendly and fun album from 1999, “Midnite Vultures”. Through a long and ever changing career, he has sold millions of records, won Grammys, and impressed with masterpieces such as "Odelay" and most recently the understated "Morning Phase". But the acoustic guitar has taken the backseat on new songs like "Dreams" and "Wow" and the focus is now instead on getting people back on the dance floor.
