Marilyn Mazur © Christian Braad Thomsen: MARILYN MAZUR – QUEEN OF PERCUSSION Marilyn Mazur Born in New York in 1955. Percussionist, drummer, vocalist, composer, bandleader. Marilyn Mazur’s background is as multi-cultural as her music. Her Polish mother was expelled from her bourgeois family, when she married an Afro-American. As mixed couples were widekly regarded as ´personae non gratae´ in these days, the family eventually settled in Denmark when Marilyn was six. As a child and teenager she played classical piano and danced ballet. She studied percussion and musicology at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, but is largely self-taught on many of her instruments, inspired by music from all over the world. She started her career as a dancer with Creative Dance Theatre in 1971. As composer/pianist she formed her first band ´Zirenes´ in 1973. From 1975 she worked as percussionist, drummer and singer with various groups, and became a household-name on the Danish musicscene as percussionist/composer of the group ´Six Winds´ she had formed with drummer Alex Riel. In 1982 Marilyn Mazur created her first all-women-music-theatre-group, ´Primi Band´ (and has led her own groups ever since). She received the Ben Webster Award in 1983, and the same year started a jazz quartet with saxophonist Uffe Markussen. She continued to develop her very personal forms of musical communication with various - mostly European - artists. In the beginning of 1985 she participated in the recording of Palle Mikkelborg´s ´Aura´ with Miles Davis, who a few months later hired her for his band, with which she toured for long periods in most of the world.

Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean.

  • Palle Mikkelborg // Marilyn Mazur // Helen Davies // Mikkel Nordsoe - Presented in Cooperation with Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience
June 17, 2010 - 7:30 pm + 9:30 pm, Lutheran Church Of The Reformation Palle Mikkelborg // Marilyn Mazur // Helen Davies // Mikkel Nordsoe - presented in cooperation with Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience. New Danish all-star band at Rochester International Jazz Festival. Danish music legends Palle Mikkelborg and Marilyn Mazur have formed an international all-star band with harpist Helen Davies and guitarist Mikkel Nordsoe. The four musicians will start their common musical journey at Rochester International Jazz Festival, Thursday 17 June 2010. It is no coincidence that these four Danish musicians are going to represent the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in the international marketing project Copenhagen Jazz Festival Experience. Each of them represents some of the best and ultimate in Danish music to day. None of them are jazz musician in the traditional sense, despite their use of freedom and improvisation - but together they invite the listener into a spiritual and beautiful world of soundscapes. Palle Mikkelborg: "My personal sound and my ideas for concerts are naturally inspired by my deep interest in spiritual matters. I have never had a musical ambition in my life, only a spiritual one. My life-long journey in music and it's magic has only ever had one aim: to find peace in mind". In 2009, Trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg celebrated his first 50 years in music. 25 years ago, Palle Mikkelborg and Miles Davis proved to be a great inspiration for each other, the outcome of which was Aura – a work that long since has been canonized and awarded with a Grammy. Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2009 had a special focus on Palle Mikkelborg and parts of Aura could be heard live for the first time in more than 25 years.

6 Dexter Gordon' s tenor sax: style The first musical foundation, learning theory. Dexter Gordon about Lloyd Reese: "He plays trumpet - all brasses - piano, sax. A lot of people out mere studied with him. I got a musical inte grity from him that has been invaluable to me." l O When Dexter joined The Lionel Hampton Big Band in 1940 he was still attending )efferson High School in Los Angeles. For a young boy, only 17 years of age, to be joining the band of one of the most exposed and popular musicians of that time, Dexter certainly must have had solid instrumental skilIs and knowledge of ele mentary theory already at that time. He had started out at the age of 13 on darinet. The darinet, being a difficult instrument to master, was - and is - generally regarded as a good place to start for laying down a good technical foundation for saxophone players. The father, who was a doctor with dose connections to the jazz community, was undoubtly responsibIe for supplying Dexter with one of the best teachers in the L.A. area at the time, John Sturdevant from New arleans, who gave the young boy a solid embouchure and tone control: "He was one of the local guys in L.A. and a vety nice cat who had that big fat clarinet sound like Bigard's. I remember asking him about that which knocked him out. I said "How ya get mat sound, man?" Il When shifting to alto sax at the age of 15, and tenor at 17, the young Dexter would probably already have overcome the most elementary technical obstacles, by the time he started imitating his main teenage idol, Lester Young.

Conceived as a deeply personal “Ein Heldenleben” of sorts, Mikkelborg’s “Going To Pieces - Without Falling Apart” takes us on a journey through the “over-tones, where we all recognize each other’s deepest desires despite our more earth-bound differences.” With more than a hundred published credits and a lifetime of extraordinary collaborations with the greatest creative musicians of the 20th including Gil Evans, Terje Rypdal, Ian Garbarek, Gary Peacock, Shankar, Don Cherry, George Russell, Dexter Gordon, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and Bill Evans, not to mention his seminal Grammy award winning composition for Miles Davis, “Aura”, Mikkelborg is unquestionably one of the most influential and visionary voices in contemporary music. “Going To Pieces…” reflects his life-long journey, through the sonic realms of progressive jazz, contemporary classical and world music idioms.
