Newsmaker of the Half-Century, determined by vote of AARWBA members, is the most important event of AARWBA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. The France family received 28.5 percent of the vote among 12 nominees for the award. A record number of AARWBA members participated, according to President Dusty Brandel. The Hulman-George family, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and responsible for building the Indy 500 into the world’s largest single- day sporting spectacle, finished second in the voting with 26.3 percent. The two families combined to capture almost 55 percent of the total vote. Lesa France Kennedy, president of International Speedway Corp., was present for the announcement. She accepted a specially commissioned painting, by artist Hector Cademartori, depicting the family’s 50 years of achievement from Brandel and AARWBA 50th Anniversary Celebration Chairman Michael Knight. -

Not content to stay stagnate, our Club Racing program continues to evolve. In 2011, we began the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour program. With the help of our partner, BFGoodrich Tires, the series expanded to nine events for 2012, and included one special event in each division. These race weekends featured elements that aren’t always available at National Races, adding to the competitors’ experi- ence. We also unveiled the Majors program in the middle part of the coun- try this season, giving racers in the Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southwest Divisions an opportunity to run for a larger championship without having to travel the country. -
Profile: Allan Moffat by James Cockington of Sidney Morning Herald – October 15, 2008
Profile: Allan Moffat by James Cockington of Sidney Morning Herald – October 15, 2008 Former Bathurst champion Allan Moffat. It's a little-known fact that Canadian-born Allan Moffat, regarded as one of Australia's motor racing legends, briefly studied politics in Melbourne. "My father was working here with Massey Ferguson," he says. "In 1962 I was given a marketing cadetship with Volkswagen Australia on the condition that we do an outside degree. I'd always been interested in politics so I enrolled in economics and politics at Monash University, which had just opened." The deal was the cadets were supposed to turn up at university at 4pm twice a week. That didn't happen a lot in Moffat's case, he admits, because that same year he bought his first car - a Triumph TR3A - and decided to race it. His first race was at Calder. "It was my road car as well. I'd bought it on hire purchase, so I couldn't race it at two meetings in a row in case the insurance company was checking the programs and noticed my name turning up all the time," he says. Racing soon took over from his studies and Moffat received a letter from the chancellor suggesting he not return for the second year of his degree. He now wishes he'd kept that letter. It changed the direction of his life. He returned home to Toronto and in 1964 drove over the border to watch the Indianapolis 500 race. While sitting in the grandstand he decided then and there that he too would be a professional driver. -
IMS Museum Honoring Andretti's Legendary Career with Exhibit
IMS Museum honoring Andretti's legendary career with exhibit March 6, 2019 – The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum will honor 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti and his illustrious racing career with the exhibit, “Mario Andretti: ICON,” presented by Shell V-Power NiTRO+, opening to the public Wednesday, May 1. The exhibit is part of a comprehensive 50th anniversary celebration of Andretti’s victory at the Indianapolis 500. Andretti led 116 laps and delivered a popular, long-awaited victory for colorful car owner Andy Andretti with 1969 Indy 500 Granatelli, despite having to race in a backup car, battling race-long winning Brawner Hawk engine overheating issues and being forced to run all 500 miles on the same right-rear Firestone tire. “Mario Andretti: ICON,” presented by Shell V-Power NiTRO+, will bring together many of the most significant cars in Andretti’s career at the IMS Museum – cars which also represent significant milestones in motorsports history given Andretti’s accomplishments. The featured exhibits of “Mario Andretti: ICON,” are a full representation of the Nazareth, Pennsylvania, resident’s diverse career. A sampling of this can’t-miss exhibit includes: • The John Player Special Lotus Type 79-4, from the 1978 Formula One World Championship run • The 1974 Vel’s Parnelli Jones team Formula One car • 1967 Dean Van Lines Brawner Hawk II Indy 500 pole-winner • 1967 Watson Leader Card Sprint car • The 1967 Daytona 500-winning car • A 1994 Lola T9400 from his “Arrivederci Mario” farewell season • The Horn Offenhauser Sprint car, named “Baby,” from Andretti’s first Sprint car race. -

Racing, Region, and the Environment: a History of American Motorsports
RACING, REGION, AND THE ENVIRONMENT: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MOTORSPORTS By DANIEL J. SIMONE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2009 1 © 2009 Daniel J. Simone 2 To Michael and Tessa 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A driver fails without the support of a solid team, and I thank my friends, who supported me lap-after-lap. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link. I respect them very much and enjoyed working with them during my time in Gainesville. I also owe many thanks to Dr. Julian Pleasants, Director Emeritus of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and I could not have finished my project without the encouragement provided by Roberta Peacock. I also thank the staff of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Finally, I will always be grateful for the support of David Danbom, Claire Strom, Jim Norris, Mark Harvey, and Larry Peterson, my former mentors at North Dakota State University. A call must go out to Tom Schmeh at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Suzanne Wise at the Appalachian State University Stock Car Collection, Mark Steigerwald and Bill Green at the International Motor Racing Resource Center in Watkins Glen, New York, and Joanna Schroeder at the (former) Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC). -
