The empirical scope of this project has particular focus on vowel harmony and vocalic features with an extended case study of Old Norwegian. Vowel harmony, simply dened, is a process where vowels in a word show systematic correspondence for some feature. Because of its many moving parts and obvious class behaviour, vowel harmony and harmony languages provide one of the best laboratories for exploring the emergence, acquisition, specication, and common patterning of phonological features. In chapter 1 I provide an introduction to Old Norwegian vowel harmony and some unexplained harmony exceptions. This chapter explores parallel phenomena in the typology of harmony languages and the theoretical challenges these patterns pose. In particular, I illustrate that non-harmonising segments display three distinct behaviours with respect to phonological activity and visibility while the core components of popular grammatical and representational approaches to vowel harmony commonly only predict two. I suggest the solution to this problem lies in the representation and denition of phonological contrastivity. Chapter 2 presents the principal components of a new approach to the acquisition and specication of features using a version of Contrastive Hierarchy Theory (Dresher, Piggott & Rice 1994; D. C. Hall 27; Dresher 23, 29) which incorporates emergent and substance-free features and feature-nodes (Iosad 217a). In this chapter I argue that phonological features, segments, feature classes, and whole sound inventories emerge according to the Correlate Contrastivist Hypothesis which holds that a language’s phonemic inventory is dened by the set of active phonological features required to express the language’s phonological regularities. Drawing insights from Westergaard’s (29, 213, 214) model of micro-cues, I posit that language learners generalise small pieces of abstract linguistic structures (‘micro-cues’) in the form of features and feature co-occurrence restrictions while parsing linguistic input. In the course of language acquisition, these micro-cues accumulate, and the sum of these cues denes a sound inventory.

    8 Virtually Norwegian: Negotiating language and identity on YouTube __________________________________________________________________________ Unn Røyneland Introduction Early January 2017 the city of Oslo suffered heavily from pollution due to a combination of extensive traffic and cold weather. To resolve this problem, the city commissioner for environment and transport, Lan Marie Nguyen Berg, issued a ban on driving diesel cars certain days. The same day a right-wing politician, who was very upset by the ban, posted a message on her Facebook wall where she attacked Nguyen Berg in extremely offensive language. She called Nguyen Berg a Vietnamese bitch, and told her to go back to Vietnam or North-Korea where communists like her belong (Dagsavisen January 17, 2017). The message was quickly picked up by the media, where it provoked resentment and launched a massive debate. The right-wing politician defended herself by saying that this was a private message posted on her Facebook wall, and also that this kind of language use is quite common in her dialect. Both of these excuses were heavily criticized and dismissed in the following debate. As a politician, you are a public figure and hence cannot expect that a post on your Facebook wall will not be spread and taken up by the media. The idea that this kind of language use has anything to do with dialect was also rejected; it is simply degrading and racist language. Still it is interesting that the politician – in the attempt to defend herself – used both these arguments. It illustrates how people tend to think about Facebook as a private site – although they have hundreds of “friends” – and also that the use of dialect is quite common in private writing in Norway.

This article is an open access publication Abstract Spelling accuracy and time course was investigated in a sample of 100 Norwegian 6th grade students completing a standardized spelling-to-dictation task. Students responded by keyboard with accurate recordings of response-onset latency (RT) and inter-keypress interval (IKI). We determined effects of a number of child- level cognitive ability factors, and of word-level factors—particularly the location within the word of a spelling challenge (e.g., letter doubling), if present. Spelling accuracy was predicted by word reading (word split) performance, non-word spelling accuracy, keyboard key-finding speed and short-term memory span. Word reading performance predicted accuracy just for words with spelling challenges. For correctly spelled words, RT was predicted by non-word spelling response time and by speed on a key-finding task, and mean IKI by non-verbal cognitive ability, word reading, non-word spelling response time, and key-finding speed. Compared to words with no challenge, mean IKI was shorter for words with an initial challenge and longer for words with a mid-word challenge. These findings suggest that spelling is not fully planned when typing commences, a hypothesis that is confirmed by the fact that IKI immediately before within word challenges were reliably longer than elsewhere within the same word. Taken together our findings imply that routine classroom spelling tests better capture student competence if they focus not only on accuracy but also on production time course.

In this survey, phonetic aspects (here called ‘categories’) that are typically reported were assessed in three English-language collections – the Illustrations of the IPA from the Journal of the International Phonetic Association, articles from the Journal of Phonetics, and papers from the Ladefoged/Maddieson Sounds of the World’s Languages (SOWL) documentation project. Categories were defined for consonants (e.g. Voice Onset Time (VOT) and frication spec- trum; 10 in total), vowels (e.g. formants and duration; 7 in total) and suprasegmentals (e.g. stress and distinctive vowel length, 6 in total). The Illustrations, due to their brevity, had, on average, limited coverage of the selected categories (12% of the 23 categories). Journal of Phonetics articles were typically theoretically motivated, but 64 had sufficient measurements to count as phonetic documentation; these also covered 12% of the cate- gories. The SOWL studies, designed to cover as much of the phonetic structure as feasible in an article-length treatment, achieved 41% coverage on average. Four book-length stud- ies were also examined, with an average of 49% coverage. Phonetic properties of many language families have been studied, though Indo-European is still disproportionately rep- resented. Physiological measures were excluded as being less common, and perceptual measures were excluded as being typically more theoretical.

Das Konzert in Paderborn in der Paderhalle, welches am 16.12.2020 stattgefunden hätte wird am 24.11.2021 nachgeholt. Alle bereits gekauften Tickets behalten ihre Gültigkeit... Der Umbruch zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre war entscheidend für die Musikszene. Während in verschiedenen Bereichen wie Gesellschaft, Politik, Mode und Kultur ein riesiger Umschwung stattfand, kam auch frischer Wind in die Musikszene. Als Synthesizer anfingen, die neuen Lieder zu dominieren und Musikvideos den Popcharts ein ganz neues Aussehen verliehen, war besonders einer maßgeblich am Wandel beteiligt: Midge Ure. Der Brite setze mit der Single „Fade To Grey“ von der Band Visage aus gleichnamigen Debütalbum und „Vienna“ von der Band Ultravox, ebenfalls aus gleichnamigen Album, neue Maßstäbe. Als Alleskönner hat er als Songwriter und Produzent an diesen und an unzähligen weiteren Hits mitgewirkt. Midge Ure`s Talent für rockige Popmusik gepaart mit seinem elektronischen Herz brachten futuristische neue Klänge auf den Musikmarkt der ganzen Welt. "Der Herbst 1979 war ein zentraler Punkt in meinem beruflichen Werdegang", erklärt Midge Ure. „In den letzten zwei Jahren bin ich von der Pop-Band (Slik) zur Post-Punk-Band (The Rich Kids) zu einem Bestandteil für Thin Lizzy als Gitarrist gewachsen. Während des Herbstes bis zum Winter 1979, als ich mit Billy Currie am Visage-Projekt arbeitete, wurde ich zu Ultravox eingeladen. Die Arbeit, die wir in diesem Winter am Vienna Album gemacht haben, war ein aufregender Kreativitätsschub, wie ich ihn noch nie erlebt hatte.“ Auch der Uhrenhersteller „Swatch“ war von der Musik von Midge Ure begeistert und nahm „Breathe“ als Soundtrack eines Swatch-TV-Werbespots, der Song erreichte damit einen weltweiten Kultstatus und verhalf der Firma somit zu ihrer erfolgreichsten Werbekampagne überhaupt.
