He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. 2 Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 They were calling out to each other, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!” 4 Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke. 5 Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.” 8 Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.” – Isaiah 6:1-8 (NLT) What is worship?     39 CHAPTER THREE ISAIAH 6:9-10 IN THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in general and the Isaiah Scroll in particular have allowed biblical scholars an unprecedented view into the formation of the Hebrew Bible. 1QIsa a, dated broadly in the 2 nd century BCE,1 has received enormous scholarly attention both because of its completed form, the only known complete biblical manuscript from the discoveries, as well as the importance of the book of Isaiah in biblical interpretive history.     SESSION FOUR Isaiah Encounters God SESSION SUMMARY In this session, the prophet Isaiah had a vision of God high and lifted up—holy and glorious in His temple. In light of God’s holiness, Isaiah received a proper vision of his own sin and unworthiness. But God, in His grace, restored Isaiah to service and gave the prophet a message for the people. Like Isaiah, we are also undone by the vision of God’s glory. Thankfully, through His grace, God deals with our sin and commissions us to deliver His message of love to the world. SCRIPTURE Isaiah 6:1-8 36 Leader Guide / Session 4 THE POINT The reality of sin can only be rightly understood when compared to God's personal holiness. INTRO/STARTER 5-10 MINUTES Option 1 Holiness is a difficult concept for many Christians to grasp, and holy living is difficult to put into practice. But there is no backing away from this character trait—holiness is essential to the Christian life. We are to be holy, just as our God is holy. In previous sessions, we have seen how God reveals Himself—through spectacular miracles and quiet whispers, through encouraging words and challenging commands. Today, we are introduced to the prophet Isaiah, a man who had a magnificent vision of God that altered his life forever. As we approach this passage about Isaiah’s vision of God, it would be normal to feel a sense of nervousness in considering the “holiness of God.” Like Isaiah, we might feel like the whole of our existence has been mixed with a lot that is “not holy.” Not only that, but we might struggle to comprehend Isaiah’s vision and the awe that it should produce in us.

    A BITTER MEMORY: ISAIAH’S COMMISSION IN ISAIAH 6: 1-13 SBL Formation of the Book of Isaiah Group A. JOSEPH EVERSON [email protected] California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 The Isaiah scroll presents us with a richly woven fabric of themes, images and motifs that appear and then reappear in later texts. Among them are the images relating to deafness and hearing, blindness and sight, fatness of heart (insensitivity) and compassion. Probably no text in the scroll of Isaiah has presented a more puzzling dilemma for the interpreter than the images set before us in the text of Isaiah 6:1-13 and in particular, vv. 9-10: Go and tell this people: hear but do not understand! see but do not perceive! Make the heart of this people fat! Make their ears heavy! Shut their eyes! lest seeing with their eyes and hearing with their ears and understanding with their heart, they return and be healed! (Isa 6:9-10) We want to ask: did Isaiah really have such a frightening commission? Can we trust our own abilities to hear, see or understand his message? Brevard Childs has written concerning this text: “Needless to say, the subject of divine hardening is one of the most difficult topics in the Bible. It appears to run in the face of God’s very nature. Does not the God of Israel will only good for his people? Was not the purpose of divine election to bestow life, not death?”1 In this essay, I contend that the text is most properly understood from the perspective of the post exilic era, possibly from the time of Ezra and Nehemiah, at a time when the scroll was approaching its present canonical form.

    The Influence of Isaiah on the Gospel of John JAMES HAMILTON Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary ABSTRACT. This article seeks to catalogue the connections between the pro- phecy of Isaiah and the Gospel of John. The study is organized according to whom the Gospel presents as making the connection: the evangelist, the Baptist, and Jesus. Further, the connections between John and Isaiah are clas- sified as either !direct fulfillments," where citation formulas are used, or as !thematic connections," where the correspondence between Isaiah and John is broader. The article seeks to establish a foundation for further study of John#s use of Isaiah by establishing the extent to which Isaianic influence may be discerned in the Fourth Gospel. Introduction A professor of English Literature once related an anecdote a- bout an undergraduate student who expressed delight in read- ing Shakespeare, because, the student said, !Shakespeare uses so many cliches." The student, of course, had it backwards. Sha- kespeare gave countless turns of phrase to the common stock of English idiom. It might be suggested that the prophecy of Isaiah had a similar impact upon the theological and religious vocabu- lary of early Judaism.1 If Isaiah is the Shakespeare of early Juda- 1 H. S.
