Molecular Phylogeny and Divergence Times Estimates of Lilium Section Liriotypus (Liliaceae) Based on Plastid and Nuclear Ribosomal ITS DNA Sequence Data

Th e study group covers Lilium species from Europe, the Italian and Balkan peninsulas, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. Plastid DNA sequence data (the trnC-petN intergenic spacer and petN gene) and nuclear DNA ITS sequence data were used to infer the phylogenetic history of the section Liriotypus. Molecular phylogenetic dating using the molecular clock hypothesis with sequences of nrDNA ITS region was used to calculate the time of diversifi cation within the section Liriotypus and with other members of the genus Lilium. Th e phylogenetic reconstruction based on combined analysis of plastid and nrDNA ITS sequence data shows that all of the analysed species of section Liriotypus form a well-supported monophyletic clade. However, there are some incongruences between the analysis made by plastid DNA alone and with a combined dataset regarding the positions of L. monadelphum M.Bieb., L. szovitsianum Fisch. & Avé-Lall., L. ciliatum P.H.Davis, and L. akkusianum R.Gämperle. Our molecular dating analysis based on nrDNA ITS sequence data showed that members of the section Liriotypus were separated from the rest of the genus Lilium approximately 9 million years ago and within this section, speciation increased in the last 6 million years. -

For genetic analysis of lily we chose the lily 6 markers. ISSR data revealed a relatively high level of genetic diversity at the different levels of the group, with 95% of polymorphic loci, effective number of alleles of 1.21, the average expected heterozygosis of 0.15 and Shannon’s information index of 0.26. Southern Plant Lists Southern Garden History Society A Joint Project With The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation September 2000 1 INTRODUCTION Plants are the major component of any garden, and it is paramount to understanding the history of gardens and gardening to know the history of plants. For those interested in the garden history of the American south, the provenance of plants in our gardens is a continuing challenge. A number of years ago the Southern Garden History Society set out to create a ‘southern plant list’ featuring the dates of introduction of plants into horticulture in the South. This proved to be a daunting task, as the date of introduction of a plant into gardens along the eastern seaboard of the Middle Atlantic States was different than the date of introduction along the Gulf Coast, or the Southern Highlands. To complicate maters, a plant native to the Mississippi River valley might be brought in to a New Orleans gardens many years before it found its way into a Virginia garden. A more logical project seemed to be to assemble a broad array plant lists, with lists from each geographic region and across the spectrum of time. The project’s purpose is to bring together in one place a base of information, a data base, if you will, that will allow those interested in old gardens to determine the plants available and popular in the different regions at certain times. This manual is the fruition of a joint undertaking between the Southern Garden History Society and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In choosing lists to be included, I have been rather ruthless in expecting that the lists be specific to a place and a time. -

The results of the recent research about the Liliaceae family, especialy anatomical research, cytotaxonomical, ecological, biochemical, and the morphological have influenced a lot the taxonomy of plants. Lately they are producing deep changes in the content of some taxons: family, genus, species, etc. Lots of taxons change their upright position, increasing or reducing their value, or the horizontal position moving from a genus to other or even from a family to other. In the last 10-15 years it has been talking more and more often about the division of the Liliaceae family in 9-15 families. Some romanian botanists (CIOCÂRLAN V., 1998) tell that although the Liliaceae family is a heterogeneous family, she must be admited as a unitary family, the heterogeneity being through taxons at level of underfamilies: Asparagoideae, Colchicoideae, Melanthioideae, Asphodeloideae, Lilioideae and Scilloideae. In this paper we present all the species from Liliaceae, identified in the Basin of Cerna of Oltet in the region of Oltenia – Romania. Key words: The Basin Cerna of Oltet, Liliaceae. Rezumat. Fam. Today, there is an ever increasing variety of new lily cultivars due to the significant progress in the propagation and development of new methods in breeding. The domesticated native species have retained their place along with new hybrids in commercialized horticultural industry, and they have sustained their invaluable potential for the breeding of new cultivars for garden use as well as for greenhouse culture. Systematics has always played an important role in plant breeding, giving guidelines for hybridization, although biotechnology has introduced new solutions for many problems that were evolutionary obstacles especially in inter-specific crossings before. The genus Lilium has been a subject of variable suggestions for classification systems, and the process still continues. The currently accepted concept for the phylogenetic and taxonomic system for all species is based on geographical, structural and genetic information. In our review, we give an insight into the latest progress in revealing the taxonomical relationships within the genus. According to the existing GenBank sequence data, we have constructed a phylogenetic tree consisting of the main species and sections of the genus. Provided with species photos, the tree gives a brief overview of phylogeny- and morphology- based classifications, which are not always congruent. Read the following instructions carefully before filling out the seed request form. PLEASE KEEP YOUR SEED LIST, packets will be marked by number only. Please send the Seed Exchange Request Form (last page of booklet) by mail as soon as possible, but postmarked no later than DECEMBER 6. We prefer that you request your seeds on-line (see back page) and the complete seed list is available on the website for reference. Although the deadline is in December, we would very much appreciate it if people could order early whenever possible. With the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the whole distribution process has to be changed, and knowing how many packets of each species are required will help. Allocation: Members are entitled to 30 packets of seeds and qualified donors can request up to 60 packets. Given the challenges of seed packaging this year by our team of volunteers, please consider that it is not necessary to request your full complement of seeds. Donors receive preference for seeds in short supply. (USDA will permit no more than 50 packets for those living in the USA.) To qualify as a donor, a minimum donation of five different species is required. North American members should donate this minimum in seeds native to North and South America. -
Breeding in Lilium
LILIUM Introduction Lily, belonging to the genus Lilium (Liliaceae), is one of six major genera of flower bulbs produced worldwide. The most important cut flower. Lilium is a Latin name but is derived from the Greek ‘leirion; used by Theophrates for the Madonna lily. The genus Lilium comprises of a large number of species, which can be found in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. The majority of the cultivated lilies are either hybrids or selections. Lilies grown in border, beds, pots and are excellent cut flowers of magnificient appearance and beautiful colours. Certain species of Lilium are edible also. Bulbs of the tiger lily (L. tigrinum) are very tasty and are consumed in China. Flowers of L. candidum contain an alkaloid linaline. Many species are valued for their medicinal properties also Globally, the main breeding work has been with the Asiatic hybrids, especially with those that have upward-facing flowers. Hybrid lilies are offered as cultivars and as mixed strains. The wild lily increases mainly by seed, and this is a realistic way for gardeners to increase their stocks. ORIGIN, HISTORY AND DISTRIBUTION Lilies are natives of the Northern Hemisphere up to South Canada and Siberia and their southern limit is Florida and the Nilgiri mountains of India. The most richly garnished places include the east coast of Asia, West coast of North America and Mediterranean region. A few species have been found in North-East India also. The first authentic record comes from Assyrian monuments dating back to 1000 BC with sculptured lily forms.
