Dear Friends

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions.

Just read the article straight through, and you'll get the point: 1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners. 3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America. 4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize. 5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor/actress.

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this : 1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. 2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time. 3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. 4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special. 5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care. We cannot hope to change the world on our own but we can change that bit of it which is ours.

Every Sunday a man would jog past a woman sitting on the banks of an Oregon lake. One day curiosity got the best of him and he stopped to see what she was doing. He could see she had a trap with some small turtles in it and one turtle was in her lap and she was cleaning its shell. “Why are you doing that?” asked the man. She replied: “turtle shells get covered in algae and it makes it difficult for the turtle to absorb the heat of the sun; if they canno t heat up they die”. The man said: “but there are so many lakes and far more turtles w hat difference do you think you are making by doing this?”

Just as he said this, she finished and she held up the turtle and said, “Ask him.”

WILBY VILLAGE SURVEY 2015

The Wilby Village Survey, the first for many years is coming! Have your say about the village and its future!

What do you think about housing in Wilby? Should there be more? If so what type of housing? What about traffic and transport ? Is this an issue for you and your family? Should we have a Community Speed Watch scheme? Are you happy with the services provided by the District and County Councils such as refuse collection, street cleaning, highways maintenance? Does the Church meet the needs of the community in your view? What about the Village Hall ? Does it lay on activities you support? We are rightly proud of our local school – should it become more involved in the community? What do you want for your village? What is the best thing about living in Wilby?

The survey which will be seeking your views on these and other matters will be hand deliv- ered to each house in the village in September and collected two to three weeks later.

Do not miss the opportunity to take part in this survey. It is your village!

NEW DEVELOPMENT

You will have noticed the new development of houses that Orwell Housing Association will be providing in the village. The development includes a mixture of flats and houses which will be available in October, with priority being given to local people and families (conditions apply). Orwell Housing Association is also pleased to be providing three shared ownership houses. If you are interested in these properties you will need to register as soon as possible with Mid- District Council via www.gatewaytohomechoice.org.uk . Properties will be advertised shortly.

If you are interested in the shared ownership houses or for further information on these properties please contact : Karen Suddes at Orwell Housing Association on 01473 228604 . LOCAL CHURCH MATTERS From the Register of St Mary’s Church, Wilby: July 10th: Funeral of Cathy Cawkwell

NEWS FROM WILBY SCHOOL

Well, another year over! With tears of joy we bid farewell to our Year 6's as they embark on their high school journeys.

We wish everyone in the local community the very best for the summer holidays, and thank you to all who have attended events or helped out in many ways.

There are three other goodbyes to mention. Our very long serving governor Celia Drakard of Brundish has stepped down after serving the school for over 20 years - having seen three heads in that time and served on numerous committees, interview panels, inspections, visits and more. Also stepping down from his governors role is Tim Earl of Wilby, after two years including having been chair of our Health & Safety committee. Finally, also departing after eight years is our Early Years teacher Emma Marsh. We thank them all for their service and dedication.

And a little hello as teacher Mr Nick Haynes and his wife have just had a bouncing baby boy!

The school Summer Fayre on the 4th of July raised a staggering £1,439, believed to be a record but most importantly it was a wonderful sunny day and great fun was had by all.

In the last month we've had our Leavers' Service for Years 6's and Mrs Marsh, a family leavers' party, a sharing assembly by Chestnut class, sports day, Music for a Summer Evening, Science and Technology day at Stradbroke High School, and the Year 6 children had their week at the Hollowford outdoor education centre in Derbyshire. Just to mention a few!

The school year finished with an unusual and special bang, as on the very last day of term our Reception and Years 1 & 2 children went to Bewilderwood, while our Years 3 to 6 children went to Latitude Festival. Wow, some well earned fun.

The first pupil day for 2015-16 is Thursday 3rd September.

Have a wonderful summer.

Please feel free to contact Mrs Coleman and her team if you have any questions about Wilby School.

Wilby Church of England Primary School Mrs Philippa Coleman, Headteacher / Mrs Kim Palmer, Chair of Governors Brundish Road, Wilby IP21 5LR 01379 384708 www.wilbyprimary.org.uk 6 NEWS FROM WILBY PARISH COUNCIL

August 2015

The Council met on 1st July 2015 and was pleased to welcome our new District Councillor, Julie Flatman, to her first meeting with us. Julie is pursuing the resolution of the long standing sewage disposal problem at Church Close which remains a source of considerable concern to residents. Julie can be contacted directly at 01986 798661 or through Mid Suffolk District Council.

Council decided that the distribution of the Village Survey should be postponed until September 2015. This will avoid the summer holiday period when many people may be away from home and will also provide more time to resolve some last minute technical issues relating to the format of the survey. Further information on the survey is being published in the August and September Parish Newsletters.

Council agreed to proceed with the provision of a defibrillator in Wilby. Based on the arrangement secured in Brundish, the plan for Wilby is to install it in the BT phone box outside the school. The equipment will be provided free of charge and BT have agreed to pay the cost of electricity for 7 years to keep the phone box illuminated and the defibrillator charged up. More detail will follow but, in the interim, attention is drawn to the separate notice in this newsletter offering free (and fun) training in first aid; and awareness of the use of the defibrillator (see page 15).

There is nothing further to report on the proposed speed restriction on London City Road, the application still being considered by Highways officials.

The Council has received a clean Internal Audit report and the Clerk was thanked for her diligent management of the accounts.

Details of the second Superfast Fibre Optic Broadband programme being implemented by BT should be made public in September. It is understood that Stradbroke should be connected by 2017 at the latest and that Wilby will likely be a candidate for connection given the presence of the school. Meantime Suffolk County Council have set an objective of 100% Superfast Broadband throughout the county by 2020.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 2nd September 2015. All are most welcome to attend.

STOP PRESS! The Council is inviting a representative of the Community Heartbeat Trust to attend the meeting on 2 September to brief those present on the proposed defibrillator for Wilby and to answer questions about how it is used, accessed etc. In addition a manager from BT is also being invited to provide an update on improved broadband for Wilby. Members of the public interested in these two matters are warmly invited to attend to have their questions answered.

9 ST LAWRENCE’S CHURCH, BRUNDISH

The Patronal Service for Saint Lawrence 9.30 a.m. Sunday, 9th August at St. Lawrence’s Church

Sometime in the 19th century the dedication for our parish church was changed from St. Andrew to St. Lawrence. No documentation is available to tell us today why this happened here, but there was a regime in the Church of England in Vic- torian times to remember the lesser known saints, especially the martyrs, by re- dedicating churches in their names, particularly those whose dedicatees were as ubiquitous as St. Andrew was. The feast day of St. Lawrence is 10th August, so on the nearest Sunday Brundish Church celebrates the life of its patron saint with a special service. A light breakfast with coffee will be served afterwards.

If you have never attended church here in Brundish, and would like to, our Fam- ily Worship services are only a half an hour long and are both informal and inti- mate. One of our Lay Ministry team usually conducts the services. It would be such a thrill to see a few new faces in our church to add to our wonderful and welcoming existing congregation. Remember, St Lawrence’s is your parish church and is not some forgotten, crumbling ruin at the bottom of Church Lane! It is always open, alive and kicking at the heart of our community. Check it out for yourself. We look forward to seeing you.

Festal Evensong Service for The Queen’s Long Reign 6.30 p.m. Sunday, 6th September at St. Lawrence’s Church

In September, H.M. Queen Elizabeth II becomes the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing the reign of Queen Victoria. To recognise this landmark, St. Lawrence’s Church will be celebrating with a Festal Evensong Service which will include, among other things, the singing of G.F. Handel’s Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest by The Chantry Singers with The Brundish Music Ensemble. It would be wonderful to see a full church for this tribute to a remarkable servant of our nation. Please do make a point to keep this date free. Thank you.

Brundish Harvest Celebrations.

This year’s celebrations kick off with our traditional service in the church on Sunday, 4th October at 6.30 p.m. The Chantry Singers will be there to join the congregation and to sing a special Harvest anthem.

The next Saturday, 10th October, at 7 p.m. in the village hall will see the village get together once again to enjoy another Harvest Supper. If you would like to help with the preparations for either of these events, please contact churchwarden, Mig Bacon, on 01379 388808. Thank you.

BRUNDISH FETE ON THE GREEN Not only Lane Farm - but now Radio hams as well

As you will have noticed we had an Amateur radio set-up at the Fete: Leiston Amateur Radio Club (LARC) led by the chairman Dave Powis.

Dave got permission from OFCOM to use the callsign GB2BVG (Brundish Village Green)

This year, with the aid of the large Delta loop antenna (made in Brundish incidentally) we managed several overseas contacts including the USA, so Brundish is certainly on the World map!!

The station was manned by Dave and Keith from Woodbridge area; and Tony St Quinton from Brundish and Les Crop from Wilby, all members of LARC. We had a couple of other members drop in including one of our lady radio amateurs. So we had two locals in the frame......

...... is there no end to Brundish’s talents?

Brundish Parish Council

Fete on the green 2015

The village fete, thankfully with no rain, was a great success this year, raising £810, shared equally between the village green and the church.

We were very fortunate to have Matthew Hicks who very kindly “opened the (telephone/defibrillator) box”, Martin Render, Chairman of the Community Heartbeat Trust, who demonstrated and explained the workings of our new defibrillator; and this resulted in 38 people signing up for the future CHBT awareness courses to be held at the village hall and Emergency Planning Group first aid courses (see page 15).

With good weather the success of a village fete is entirely due to the efforts of the many villagers who are prepared to give up their time setting up and running the fete. It was very encouraging the see the younger generation helping in all aspects of the fete.

I should particularly like to thank: Ian and Sue Whitehead of Lane Farm for their very generous donation of burgers and sausages for the barbeque which raised over £200; Kevin Apps for organising the car display, which is becoming more interesting and bigger by the year (see the front cover for his “balloons in a classic car competition” ); Peter and Diane Palmer for all their help; and all the people who gave prizes, baked cakes and grew plants to sell - all this effort contributed to the success of the day. Anthony Bryant

FITNESS AND WELL-BEING

DEFIBRILLATORS ARE COMING TO BRUNDISH, LAXFIELD AND WILBY

We are working with Laxfield and Wilby to bring defibrillators to each of our villages.

The Brundish defibrillator is located in our Telephone Box at Crown Corner and will be fully commissioned shortly.

We are currently arranging a series of informal awareness courses on the use of the defibrillator with the Community HeartBeat Trust in Brundish Village Hall, starting in September; and additional courses with the Emergency Planning Group - to bring us all up to speed with the latest first aid techniques.

The next two (free) first aid courses are on Wednesday, 23rd September and Saturday, 10th October. I can vouch for the fact that these short courses are exceptionally good as well as being most enjoyable - and include an excellent lunch and first aid certificates!

If you are interested in either of these courses, please contact Tim Gillingham at [email protected]

SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE

September 12th from 9am to 5pm

If you enjoy cycling then why not visit as many churches as you can and get yourself sponsored. Half of your sponsorship money goes to the Trust and the other half to your local church.

For those of you who would like to take part in this year's Sponsored Church Ride, please note the date in your diaries and give us a call so we can send you a sponsor’s form in due course. Sponsor forms will soon also be available in Wilby Church, and if you require further information please speak to Mary Pipe on 01728 723443 or Anne St Quinton on 01728 628309. For those unfamiliar with the event, it entails cycling from church to church around the country lanes doing as much or as little as you wish. Just visiting Laxfield, Brundish, Wilby and Stradbroke may be enough for some younger or inexperienced cyclists, but others may wish to go further afield. It is a wonderful way to help raise funds for the church of your choice and to get out and about for pure enjoyment and fitness.
